I asked Bob Abberfield and he remembered the incident...The chequered flag had come down and John went by, up the hill, maybe he lost concentration or something but he ran up the bank and rolled it on the slow-down lap.Oh, and Jacer, thank you for identifying Rick Pickering. Once you know that name it's easily picked up from the name on the car, isn't it?.

This happened in late 1973.
I remember overhearing Col Wear remarking to J O’B .....’You need to keep it on the island even after the race is finished’. !!

Interestingly, in the same season, Geoff Brabham had an off at a similar spot at Amaroo on the warm up lap.

These photos have appeared on facebook in the last day or so and although I can't respond directly to the FB post, I can add some detail here. Ann-maree Ramsay is looking for an answer about these Riley photos that relate to her relative Aub Ramsay.

The conclusion I've come to is that they relate to almost exactly 80 years ago - the 1st January 1940 Lobethal South Australian "HUNDRED" or Lobethal "FIFTY" Motor Car Races.

The programme for this meeting lists "21 Jackson Motors Ltd Riley 18mins" for the 100 and "21 Jackson Mot. Ltd Riley 9mins" for the 50. The game is given up in the Kendall Oils advert with 5 times Midget Car Champion of SA Aub Ramsay mentioned to drive the Brooklands Riley Special of Jackson Motors Limited of Unley.

Car 17 behind Aub is a then future AGP winner, John Crouch driving a MG T type.Sharing the same handicap times as Aub in both events.

I've copied your post over there, Stephen...

There was a question about what model Riley, I'm guessing a Riley 9?

Ray, I can see 3 posts but not yours. One comment is from Geoff McInnes - he has spent many years around Riley's. So one could hope he is more familiar with the particluar car, than I will ever be. Also Bob King and John Medley are regulars on that site, so hopefully they can add some detail.

In Ann-maree's opening comments she mentions Dr Downing. My 1939 AGP programme has him llisted in the First Event South Australian Junior Grand Prix  "16 C R E Downing SA Riley Special 6mins 45secs". But I can only assume a DNS because his name is pencilled through (as are many others, inc Tomlinson).

Third Event Australian Grand Prix, 1939 has a slight variation with his initials "16 C R S Downing, SA Riley Special 12 mins 45secs"

Back to 1940 and there is a rear 3/4 left side view of the 21 Riley in Parky's Lobethal booklet p38

The FB site now gives a clue to the Riley ownership in more recent times. Former Sandown Clerk of Course, Ken Nancarrow and 'Kurt' - who will be Kurt Schultz.

He and his Riley collection (although being called Karl) have a feature in the second issue of Sports & Classic Cars Australia in early 1986. The 2 photos shown below are from the feature, but precious little is mentioned of the Brooklands.

Kurt has for many years been a part of the local swap meet scene and I do recall reading a for sale board for said Riley, sometime in the last 5 years. Going by the FB comments the car is now overseas.

Where were we up to with Denis' pics?

Time for some more from Denis...

Frank Matich... Denis appears to have been panning this when he bumped into someone. Good effect, however.

The old man who showed he still had it, and still has, Ken Smith at Surfers.

And then he got a T332, again at Surfers.

The Riley's Victorian LBF 591 rego plate suggests it may have been liberated from South Australia in early 1972.
