Dan - no problem I'll pick you up at the pub on the corner of the Ormskirk road (don't have too much to drink!) I'll be there about 7:15.

The last two posts have left me a trifle confused. I thought the meeting was last night - Any reports of proceedings?

In the absence of Time Lord Wilkinson, here's a bit of what went on. Roll call, Mallory Dan (hitch-hiked from Rufford), Eeyore48, Paul Hurdsfield, Roger Clark, Sean and Tom White, Slurp1955 and a big welcome to RS250, a pleasure to welcome him to his first meet.

Topics, not in table order

Sean's new pub "The Victoria" in Aspull, Wigan. He's looking to refurbish it with Motor Racing memorabilia, so if anyone has anything suitable post details on here. Sean suggested a possible buffet and pint night nearer Xmas at the pub - sounds good to me. He and Tom left a little early to take delivery of some guest ales.

Nigel Robuck at The Swift Gallery on 29th September

The Pie and Quiz night at The Swift Gallery on 20th October

Tom White's Historic FF2000 campaign, one round to go and he could finish 2nd in the Championship

David Coulthard

Max Mosley and the McLaren Fine

Ian Shelbourne's Ensign LNF3

Briatore The Cheat and my proposed class action against him after Singapore GP 2008

Jochen's 72 wreck, its location and part restoration

Lotus at Oulton

Paul's trip around circuits in France in his Westfield

The Allied advance, from Normandy to Twente Enschede

FOOTIE - United's poor form, Norwich's earth shaking win at Goodison Park, and some stuff about West Brom

Irony Section - Leicester and Hull as UK Cities Of Culture

Really good night, and mates were missed too, JohnP

Sorry I missed it- must try harder.

If any of you are at a loose end on Saturday 1st October; Andrew Swift has sent out an invitation- the Gallery will be open and there will be an informal Classic Car Show; Fenton's answer to run what ya brung. There is some mention of a Concours prize (if there is a category for most cow-**** on a Lotus, I'll enter).

Sounds like an ideal opportunity for those who can't get there on a Thursday.

£5 donation to the Surtees fund, light refreshments available.

Also...  you photographers, check out the Open Photography Exhibition; a chance for you to be well-hung in Stoke; our humble snaps alongside the world's best.

http://www.theswiftgallery.co.uk/

See you at the Roebuck event on Thursday?

Cheers,

Pete.

No probs Steve, though we were all a little concerned re your absence. Sean's new venture sounds great, and a pleasure to meet RS250. One or 2 very interesting tales he told, concerning Sid Taylor and the Brummie Racers mafia, and, separately, Mr Senna....

Another of Andrew Swift's superb evenings at the Swift Gallery in Stoke last night. Principal guest was Nigel Roebuck, making a return visit while Simon Arron was making his first visit and joined Nigel to answer questions and to discuss their views on the state of GP racing, Oulton Park, Chris Amon and other topics close to their hearts.

Quite a few TNFers past and present joined the large audience and it was nice to see Ted 'Ferret' Walker and Jeff Bloxham in their midst.

Andrew really knows how to make everyone welcome and if you haven't yet taken a look at this superb gallery, do make the effort.

I heartily endorse Alan's praise for the gallery, the host and the evening itself. Andrew's guests are also an interesting. knowledgeable and varied bunch. Do join them if you can - a good time would be on Quiz 'n' Pie night (details for which you will find on the gallery's website).

A final heads-up for the Annual Quiz and Pie Night at The Swift Gallery, this Thursday, October 20th from 6 p.m. in sun-kissed Fenton. Andrew has introduced Rule 917k for the evening, aimed at breaking up the little coteries of TNF participants and other bandits for the Quiz. It will still be great fun, and the last special event as the Gallery closes for the winter next week. Heaven knows what Mr Swift will come up with next as the place just gets better every year, JohnP  (who still owes Mr Clark for his supper last time out!)

Cough...

The Swift bash was splendid, as usual. TNF photographers please send in your entries in for the "Reader's Wives" wall. Andrew told me there is no minimum standard, so I'm looking forward to Instamatic snaps of family days at the track booting out arty-farty masterpieces.

Um.. actually arty-farty masterpieces welcome too.

So; chaps, where re we going to meet up, pre-chrimbo?

If there is to be a pre-Xmas meet should we make an effort to support Sean's venture?

As for the TNF Readers' Wives wall I should point out it will be the wall in the executive loo. Polaroids as well as Instamatic snaps may be submitted. Allegedly

Hi Ian, what night should I arrange for Jane's TNF photo-shoot? I've been vigorously buffing up my selfie stick in anticipation, and tell her not to worry about my Congleton Magistrates Court thing, people should forgive and forget. I fancy a trip to Sean's pub too, a pie and pint with the genuine Pie Eaters - either that or it's Pete, you and me at The Carters in Wilmslow - great pies there and "dog-friendly" too. At least that's what the Korean landlord told me.

Pete, I understand Sean has become the landlord of a public house. An establishment serving decent ale in a town famous for its pies. What's not to like?

John, I regret to say that despite today's session in an expensive spa (no not in Belgium) madame does not feel quite ready for public exposure - flattering as your offer is. As for  the Carters - beer IS good but the Labradoodle and potato pie is crap. You're barking up the wrong tree there.

Pete, see the first line of my notes in Post #105. Sean White's tavern in Aspull, in the very heart of Pie Eater country. He's refurbishing it with a motor racing theme, and may even hang a FF2000 from one of the ceilings. :)

Sounds like a plan; does Sean have any preferences with respect to day of the week or date for the foray into "The Pie Country"?

Best thing to do with them. That or fit a roof and passenger seat. :smoking:

I'm still looking after Mrs T, who continues to improve on a daily basis but at the moment, I'm a definite maybe.

They're probably referring to another northern meeting which we discussed at David Beard's funeral. I spoke to Pat about it and she would like to attend. I suggest we wait a couple of weeks and check her availability.

I've tentatively arranged a David Beard Memorial TNF meeting. Thursday July 6th at the Eagle & Child - this was where I first met David in late 2003. We both thought it'd be an idea to have further Northern TNF meetings, which followed from 2004 onwards. Pat Beard's free that night, I've told her I'll try to get a good turnout of David's TNF mates, so hope the usual suspects can make it!

Please could you add eeyore to the list . Mrs eeyore is currently unable to say if she intends to accompany me but has not entirely ruled out the possibility. I hope that is definite enough for you , Dan.

 On a different matter...could I ask everyone to consider attending the evening at the Swift gallery on Thursday 29th June. Details ,as ever, are on the Swift website and it would be good to have your interest registered as soon as possible. Thanks.

Just returned from another very entertaining and informative evening at the Swift Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent. The presentation was given by Don Wales, grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell and nephew of Donald Campbell. He told of his own interest and efforts in the world of record-breaking with steam-powered and electric cars (and lawnmowers!), and also of his famous forebears, accompanied by some great photographs and film footage.
The next talk is scheduled for July 20th and will be by Michael Harre, the man responsible for engines and gearboxes at Mercedes GP

I have to endorse what Alan says. Don Wales is a very entertaining entertaining speaker with a wonderful, if ultimately tragic, tale to tell. I was lucky enough to speak to him after the main event and his Jerry Hall story is something else.

Thanks as always to Andrew Swift for the venue and the event.

And we can't have the upstairs room I'm afraid, some Grumbling Old Farmers in there. I shall I have to prepare a Table Plan at this rate....

A splendidly convivial evening at the Eagle & Child to remember our very good friend, David Beard. It was lovely to see Pat and David's son-in-law, Craig (aka 'Matthew Norton' TNF badge no.26 to TNFers), who had travelled over from Wakefield to join us, and who had some splendidly affectionate stories to tell about David and how he passed his interview to join the Beard family. Sorry, but I have no idea what the far end of the table was talking about but no doubt Sergeant Wilko will be along soon to fill in the details.

Great to be back with the North West chapter of TNF after missing the last couple of events. Part way through our meal Roger proposed the toast to David.

At the Western end of the tables the discussion kicked off not unsurprisingly with .....

The Queues on the M6, Roadworks and alternative routes to the Eagle & Child

Moving on to ....

1) Bound volumes of Autosport & Motoring News and the lack of value in single copies of the magazines.

2) Mr Rear's new set of wheels (it's a Merc drophead!)

3) Oulton Park

4) Harewood hillclimb

5) MSV Hire Charges

6) Cholmondley

7) Historic racing

8) Driver's with a peculiar bent!

9) Sponsorship in motor sport and the rising costs

10) Formula Talbot

11) Local Newspapers (Manchester Echo etc)

12) Murray Walker

13) Jaguar E Types - lightweight or heavyweight

14) Goodwood - then & now (Both the FoS & the Revival)

15) Back to the HSCC and their varied programme at events

16) How Historic FF1600 races are as good if not better than in period

17) Toleman F2 and F1

18) Bolton's Maurer connection

19) Cibachrome

20) Five F1 Drivers who bear Scottish town names (Phil "Costa" Rainford's attempt at humour as Ayr Town Centre counts as one!)

21) King Canute

22) The Jam (my favourite is cherry)

23) VSCC Hillclimbs

24) Football - sorry David!

After several of the attendees had left there was a heated debate between an ex-pat Yorkshireman and a native of Northamptonshire about the relative distances between Kettering, Northampton, Silverstone and Watford Gap Services! The rest of us were somewhat disinterested but played along!

As Alan and Alan have said, a very convivial and enjoyable evening at the Eagle and Child in memory of David.

A very nice obituary of David from Historic Lotus magazine was circulated - he was in good company, with Sir John Whitmore being given 'equal billing' on the facing page.

It was lovely to see Pat and talk over David (and Pat)'s Bucks/Oxon connections.

Thank you, Dan, for inviting me and for ensuring the food DID arrive just before my early enforced departure, for which I apologise.
