I did a quick search but can't find any reference to this on this forum which I find very hard to believe. Has this been mentioned before?

Here are some links related to it:

I sent several emails to web site inquiring if a DVD would be released and never received a reply.

Does anyone know whether it will go on general-ish release after the one-off showings on 21 Feb?

Worth bringing up again, I suppose....Is there any information about a DVD or BluRay becoming available?

Thank you.

Hope this is shown in the US.  A few years ago, Senna was at one of PHX area  "artsy" type theatres-  pretty good crowd for it.  Was great to see on a big screen before it was on TV.

Well…

I wasn't expecting - although perhaps I should have been - to be told that the Mercedes team scraped off their paint to get under the maximum weight limit...

Well worth watching. It drew quite an audience of youngish Pistonheaders to whom the circuit is something of a holy grail, beyond it's motor sports history.

One of the film's investors (the wife of a current F! team principal) told me today that there is another one featuring Monaco in the pipeline...... :smoking:

On the whole, I enjoyed it. Some of the earlier footage was blown up too much to fit the wide-screen format and some of the aspect ratios looked a bit stretched. It glossed over Fangio's 1957 victory, Moss in 1961, Clark in 1965 and didn't mention Stewart's 4 minute winning margin in 1968. My attention wandered a bit at the end when they started talking about track days, simulators and car development. Good footage of Mass in the M-B and Stuck in the 956, would have liked more of that, and more footage overall. Perhaps it'll be included as extra features on the DVD?

Like Glengavel above I enjoyed it overall. The omissions were surprising (no Surtees - winner on two and four wheels; No Brooks; and hardly a mention of Fangio except by Stirling Moss). Film makers seem to need moving pictures before they will cover a subject although there IS footage of Fangio winning in 1957 and impressive it is too. The footage of amateurs trying too hard and rolling their road cars mixed in with so Marathon de la Route footage and the video games footage was a waste of time. It could easily have been replaced by stories that many of us know well, but repay retelling.

My favourite sequence was one filmed by and with commentary from Count Von Trips. He was driving and passengering in his 356 Porsche - shooting some of the sequence standing up to his waist through the sunroof as he chased his shadow along the road.

To drive the circuit before I die is still on the bucket list.

P.S. Stay for the extra piece at the end.  Worth waiting for as it was Jackie Stewart's reaction to the film and some more insights into what racing was like in his day.

Personally I was a bit disappointed by The Green Hell for the reasons others have mentioned.

A missed opportunity, poor editing, loud music over the sounds of engines. They could of used some of the 114 mins to show in car footage with a decent driver/car combination.

Overall I enjoyed it and the two guys I went with were blown away with the 30's and 50's footage.

Curate's egg as has been said elsewhere. Interesting archive footage, the paint scraping "story" (which we know isn't right), Alfa DTM cars, Group C, interviews with Mass, Stuck and Danner which made a change from the usual JYS and Moss on these things. Seemed a little disjointed from time to time, but overall worth going to watch.

Brought back good memories of our first visit to the Ring last year for VLN (when it was hot and sunny all day !)

Went to see The Green Hell last night at Niagara Square in Niagara Falls, Ontario. It was a big disappointment. I wasn't sure what to expect but what was delivered was a real letdown.

It started out with a fairly decent telling of how the track came about and started into a history of races from the beginning until recent times. But it started to disappoint right then and there.

  • The history of the great races of the past was glossed over and much was left out.
  • Those interviewed kept repeating that the Nurburgring was the greatest race track in the world but you never got a true sense of why. There was no overall discussion of the layout of the track itself and what were the most challenging sections and why. What was really missing was an in-car lap at racing speed. That would have answered the question leaving no doubts.
  • They talked over and over about how modern carmakers consider the track to be essential in developing their performance models. We got the message the first time. Some specifics about what track sections provided what challenges would have been technically interesting.
  • Many of those interviewed were unknown and uninteresting people and the anecdotes were often uninteresting and not relevant to the subject at hand. They had Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Hans Stuck, Jochen Mass, Jackie Oliver, Hans Hermann and Stirling Moss but even their stories weren't all that enlightening. One person not interviewed was Jacky Ickx. That was a major omission. Ickx was considered the Ringmeister in the sixties and seventies. In the 1967 Grand Prix he out qualified all but two of the 3 liter F1 cars in a 1.6 liter F2 car and he won the race in 1969 and 1972. John Surtees too was probably still alive when they were filming and was not included. He won the race in 1963 and 1964.
  • The film clips of the races were inferior to what is known to exist.
  • They never really got into why the track is known as The Green Hell. Sure, lots of corners and difficult to provide a safe racing environment. Even the best drivers were scared of the place and showed it great respect which is why no really top driver was killed there (although they ignored Peter Collins, Ferrari F1 driver in 1958). But they didn't detail the terrific toll the track took on second tier drivers trying to compete with the best. That included such drivers as Ernst von Delius (Auto Union, 1937), Onofre Marimon (Maserati, 1954), Carel Godin de Beaufort (Porsche, 1964), John Taylor (Brabham, 1966), Gerhard Mitter (Lola-BMW, 1969) and Herbert Mueller (Porsche, 1981).,
  • They even made fundamental mistakes that could have easily been checked. I believe they said that Alberto Ascari won the 1951 race to clinch the World Championship. Ascari won the race that year but Juan Manuel Fangio won the World Championship. Ascari won the race and the World Championship the following year. And they said that Phi Hill drove a Honda in the 1964 Grand Prix. Hill drove a Cooper-Climax in that race and never drove a Honda in any race. Ronnie Bucknuim drove the only Honda in that race.
  • My opinion at the end of the movie was that its purpose was to promote the track for track day events, to recruit more carmakers to use the track for testing and to advertise Aston Martin's racing heritage (past and present).

I'm glad I went to see it. There were some unexpected surprises (such as the artist Michael Turner). But I won't be rushing out to but  the DVD.

Comments anyone?
