Fifth for Verstappen is really the best possible result, amazing!
Were Toro Rosso sandbagging over the winter?

Great drives by both. Surprised to see Max edge it. Mistake in the second to last corner by Carlos cost him.
Why surprised?
Great result for both guys but not liking this new quali very much. There is just not enough time to do more than one run for most.
Looking good for tomorrow however. We might see a podium for Max or Carlos in the first race. In the dry. Who would have thought that 3 months ago.

Why? Max had the edge over Sainz already in the second half of last season. Happy with that but not surprised to be honest.Great drives by both. Surprised to see Max edge it. Mistake in the second to last corner by Carlos cost him.

Going to be non-partisan: both these guys have a long successful motorsport future ahead of them.

Max was very lucky today, this weekend Sainz seemed to have 3-4 tenths advantage. Once again, it seems that when Sainz is under pressure he makes mistakes.

Verstappen is not 'comfortably' faster like Vettel over Rai or Hamikton over Rosberg.

Carlos seemed a bit faster. Without his lock-up, he would likely be ahead.
Verstappen is not 'comfortably' faster like Vettel over Rai or Hamikton over Rosberg.
He did in FP3 but in "qualifying" Verstappen had an edge over him from the start. Verstappen said on Dutch tv that he had changed the set-up after FP3 and that turned it around.

Perhaps but isn't that what being a good racing driver is about though, be faster without making mistakes.
A lockup means you are pushing it over the limit or not controlling the car well at that moment.
In any case I don't see either Max or Carlos getting comfortably ahead of the other in qualifying. We all know Max has talent and Carlos is a pretty good driver too as we have seen last year.

Carlos needs to calm down and focus, his only edge over Max was one lap pace and racestarts. Carlos can drive very fast but is more error prone when pushing. Max is better racer of the two and getting better in qualifying too. This is crucial year for both regarding promotion/status/open spots in other teams.

I think this just shows that both these drivers are talented and deserve a place at a top team. Probably the best pairing Toro Rosso has ever had (with that I mean both drivers, obviously they had Vettel) and they should be capable or scoring some decent points. Wouldn't be surprised if they can do something special tomorrow. But what a machine James Key has designed, although I highly doubt he's done all the work so whoever was in his design team kuddos to them! It's hard to forget this was once the old Minardi team, would have made this even more perfect if it would still be Minardi. Although they wouldn't have the funds to this... Oh well i'm rambling, not enough sleep.

Yeah, I think that Carlos shoul relax and focus a bit more. He also speeded in the pitlane again, one of his biggest faults last year, so he definitely has to improve that. We all see he has talent, he just needs to keep it together and be more eficient.
About Max, well, what to say. 5th on the grid and maybe podium chances for tomorrow. Just think what theToro Rosso could do if they had 2016 Ferrari PU? Or Mercedes PU? Remarkable work from them.

Gonna be another close year between these two.
Carlos had the edge throughout quali but then Max delivered a great lap.
The race should be interesting, last year Carlos was harder on his tyres than Max, I wonder if he has addressed that and whether the two will go wheel to wheel in the race.

Junior doesn't have a chance this season against The Max.

Carlos' first run in Q2 was on used tyres.Really, I felt Max was comfortable in front of Carlos, yes Carlos was faster in q2 but he needed a extra run for it and Max did not have to push for q3 anymore. If Carlos did not lock up Max could have done another lap but that would still only be difference between p5 and p6.

Again this proves that both drivers are very talented and belong in F1. Sainz still looks the faster of the two, by a very small margin, over one lap as his Q2 time proves. Carlos still looks the more error prone under pressure. I expect Max to edge out Carlos over a whole season relatively comfortably.
After this qualification both are positioned ideally to pick up the scraps if Ferrari and/or Mercedes make mistakes or have reliability issues. But I would most definitely keep an eye out for both Force India drivers and Bottas. They were only marginally slower than Toro Rosso, are positioned on the 5th and 6th row but have free tyre choice. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the stay out longer in the first stint, need a pitstop less and finish in front of Carlos and Max.

Max is a once in a life time driver. Sainz is also talented to hang with him but not in the same class. Then again no 18yr old driver has ever been this good.

Loved Hamilton giving that compliment. Feels like a good match for both drivers. Carlosis fast enough to push Max faster, while Max can show Carlos the way in overtaking.

Max needs some speaking to...his attitude was bordering on rude last year and if the first race is anything to go by, its only gotten worse.

And a team that continues to **** up pitstops and strategy.Ugh Max, I get the frustation, being so much faster and your teammate not even showing he is trying to move forward.

I also can totally understand the frustration of ending there. But the complaining was just hypocritical. I really feel the team should've switched places. But it was Verstappen himself who kinda blocked that move for the future last year.

Carlos was racing Max, took way too much time overtaking Palmer. Shows he is not as good at overtaking as Max.

Not the greatest by either of the 2 today, Ricciardo was driving away from both of them in a slower car on the same tyre before things got shaken up.

Then, why didn't Verstappen overtake Sainz?

Can't blame Carlos for that but I get Max' frustration, apparently he prefered the soft tyre for the last stint but the team put him on mediums.Carlos was racing Max, took way too much time overtaking Palmer. Shows he is not as good at overtaking as Max.
Besides that Carlos got the undercut, I remember the fuzz about that last year (Hungary).
Strange decisions by the team.

It's not Sainz's fault that the team messed up Verstappen's stop. His almost taking out Sainz whilst bitching on the radio is something I hope he leaves here in Australia.

Once again TR has destroyed their own race in the pits. I can understand the frustration from Max, he opened a gap of about 7 seconds, then the safety car neutralizes. Later, thenth by tenth he opens a 2 seconds gap only to be called to pits later than Sainz, and then the pit error. In this race, Sainz has had all the fortune that he didn't had last season.

Both drivers were bad today worst was TR strategy calls. Max immature and his age shows emotions effect his driving. And if I got a dollar for every lockup from Carlos today I would be a millionaire. Expect heavy debriefing and more focus next races.

Max got really hot headed there but he has that Hamilton/Alonso level of speed.

Nothing rude about it, just says it like it is.He is not hurting anyone by speaking up.
You have to understand the frustration as driven and competetive as he is. The team threw away an excellent finish here once more.

You win and loose as a team. And if he'd let Sainz pass him for a shot last year, who knows, maybe he would've had his shot today.
You learn as long as you live. Teamplay or humilty might be todays lesson.

I saw Verstappen pulling off an Alonso's "this is ridiculous" today. Come on, Max, if you can go for the overtake, go for it as we all expect you to. Quit the whining on the radio because that looks indeed ridiculous and it's disrespectful to your teammate. I can get his frustration, but I think he went too far almost taking Carlos out. We'll see how all of this turns out, I hope we can still see them fight fair and square all year.
Besides, shame for the team because they could've got a nice amount of points here. They have a nice car, just use it properly.
