Alonso is out of the Bahrain Grand Prix. Chest scans showed "insufficient resolution of the signs to allow him to race"

Vandoorne to make his debut

So the Sun was correct

Seems a strangely written sentence "insufficient resolution of the signs"

Sorry for Alonso, but a great opportunity for Stoffel! I am glad I ordered a McLaren T-Shirt.

'Kinell...  Well, it did look like a bit of a bump, but after he was wandering round a few minutes later I thought he'd be fine.

Nice for Vandoorne, shame for Fred

My thoughts entirely - and as Treads says there will be conspiracy theories...

I don't know what the g-force of his impact was, but it was enough to break his seat, which is pretty nasty.  We joked on chat about how his apparently minor bump in Barcelona last year sidelined him for a race, but the spectacular crunch hadn't slowed him down.

"insufficient resolution of the signs to allow him to race"

GP2 comment, GP2, Arrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh . . .

Very sad for Fernando Alonso and his fans but "Safety First"

Apparently that is what 47G can do to the body. That was a big accident. Glad he is OK.

Vandoorne is in Okayama of Japan testing Super Formula today and tomorrow

He must be on the way right now to airport.

such tight schedule, arriving Bahrain to run F1 right away

Could be his big break though. If he performs well, then surely a seat next year?

Yikes!  And Stofell will have a tad of jet-lag...

If the McLaren team didn't have bad luck, they wouldn't have any.

It does show that the were not aware of any problems for Fred.

Stoffel Vandoorne@svandoorne

About to board for Bahrain, a bit earlier than expected but so much looking forward to it! Will do my very best for the team @McLarenF1!

How he hasn't got a seat already is entirely beyond me, and probably a lot of others. He seems to have the talent to go straight into a top, top team.

I'd love him instead of Kimi. Oh well!

What the hell? He hadn't given any indication whatsoever he wasn't fine. Also, a "chest" problem? That is very strange. I'd think not passing a health check like this would be far more likely if he had unnoticed slight concussion repercussions or something.

Good for Vandoorne I guess. Make the best out of the opportunity Stoffel because you might not ever get another.

Reports did say 'politics' prevented him getting a seat for this year.

Folk have far longer tenures in F1 now than they used to - you can start at 17 and still be racing at 37, and F1 teams are extremely conservative - it's simpler for a team to keep a known quantity than take a punt on new talent.

I think I may take a break from cycling to watch the practice tomorrow after all.

Man, to say he's a two times champion, Alonso has such dreadful luck. I can't read the article on Autosport because I've run out of free views - does it specify why he's not racing? Concussion or something else?

I'm excited to see how Vandoorne does though. Heck of a talent.

The jet lag would break me. But he's a young guy, in his first F1 race. He'll be fine.

Unfortunately there are a myriad of possibilities and we won't find out till the press conference "Alonso is to take part in the official news conference on Thursday, where he will further explain the doctors' findings." according to the bbc

Broken ribs for Alonso?

yeah most likely cracked or broken ribs

especially cracked rib it pains but you can hide it

plus unless serious you can do nothing other than just leave it to cure

so even if it's not serious it can still take time, hopefully nothing serious in anything and most likely nothing serious.

Assuming that he is, I'm super-excited to see Stoffel. Fingers crossed he is as good as we think he is.

Surprised by this, I was under the impressions they checked him from head to toe (by McLaren or other personal doctors) before going to Barhain. Let's hope he can race in China.

I'm surprised at that, thought he'd be fine to race considering how quickly he got out of the car. It'll be interesting to see how Vandoorne does though.

I wouldn't expect fractures - modern hi-res x-rays can spot such things, and they'd definitely be looking for them - but I'm going to wait, not speculate.  I'm glad that they do have such thorough testing of drivers, elite sportsfolk will always try and work through injuries, and often aggravate them by overdoing things.  It's a shame for Fred, as I said, but great for Stofell, let's hope that it's first of many for him.

I'd expect him to do shedloads of laps in FP1 and 2, I just hope that the mix of tyres the McLaren have brought will be sufficient, he didn't get time at Barcelona in testing this year, so he'll need the time.

A couple of days after the accident he told journalists that his chest hurt. He also twitted a week after the crash that he was still taking medicine.

So my guess would be cracked ribs. They usually start to make themselves known only later (and they become visible on X-Rays also only after some time).

What a bummer.

Even if there is nothing 'wrong' with Alonso, in the sense that whatever happened will heal itself, he'll have been shaken up by the crash and as we discussed at great length after last year's testing accident, one of the things the doctors want to prevent is two serious incidents in quick succession.

'@alo_oficial had complained of sore ribs after the Melbourne accident - on the left side, so most likely from the first impact.

I thought this immediately. It actually makes no sense whatsoever. I think something may have been lost in translation here. In any case, its somewhat vague.

That's a shame, hopefully Alonso will be healed up in time for China, it's a shame not to have one of the best drivers currently in the sport not on the grid. Best of luck to Vandoorne in his absence.
