Emotional involvement in sport is real the extent of which may vary not just in f1 but more so in sports like Football. Anyone who denies it has never followed a sport with passion. How do you separate passion with emotion when the lines are so blurred. Sport  may be a job for the competitors but for the people who follow it is a passion. This is what differentiates the casual fans who Bernie panders to and the real ones who are attached to the sport emotionally.

You seem to be confusing the sport with the individual. Isn't the sport bigger than the individual?

You may be more "emotionally invested" than you think you are.

See, Herbert is now a commentator, it is his job to comment on F1. (Remember I don't get to see Sky so I don't know exactly what he said and has transpired between he and Alonso.

Alonso is a driver, he does his work on the track.

Alonso is a (as everyone knows) two time World Champion, he doesn't have to ambush a commentator and declare his status, it speaks for itself.

So, you do not know what has been said between the two but you are commenting?

The sport is bigger than the individual, you are correct., but what good is it for the sport to have a commentator drag one of its brightest stars through the mud?

I may be, I may be not. But with respect, you simply have no idea how emotionally invested I am with Alonso, apart from my words here, and I'm assuming that you haven't been trawling through my words regarding Alosno on this forum.

Are you a broken record or do you just lack the courtesy to read responses to your previous posts? (See post 379 in this thread)

You are right I don't know, when I made my "emotionally attached" post it was based of the number of repeat posts which are belittling and insulting to Herbert.

Why repeat the same thing again and again?

Why not interpret the situation for what it was?

I read your response. You've seen Alonso's reaction, one side. Herbert's article is still available to read. Generally when one forms an opinion they do so having looked at both sides. Unless of course, you have an agenda.

It was very interesting to see the NBC F1 commentary team's responses to Alonso's post-qualifying interview with Will Buxton. They were quite taken with Alonso's confidence, hunger, energy, enthusiasm, and passion. Strangely, none of them thought he needed to retire. Indeed, Leigh Diffey even gushed over Alonso not talking like a 30+ year old veteran driver, but more like a fresh young rookie or second-year driver.

I saw NBC's coverage of qualifying but not the post qualifying comments but I am pleased to hear that Alonso has returned to the high road.

I have previously read the article you linked and have now read it again. Nowhere in that article do I see Herbert being disrespectful towards Alonso, Could you point out the passage(s) which you take offense to?

What I see is a commentator sharing his opinion that he feels Alonso should retire. Is this what incited Alonso to sideswipe Herbert and remind everyone that he, Herbert is a commentator and that he, Alonso is a two time world champion?

I'm not going to comment each quote because IMO every single one has no basis whatsoever. The outstanding ones are the claim that Alonso was unwilling to drive in Bahrain, that there is any significance to either drivers' race results or qualifying pace in 2015, and that we can't see passion in his demeanor.

If you state in the media about anyone that there are clear signs of his abilities deteriorating as if he was a granny, don't expect the recipient to take it without a comment.

Edit: And keep in mind that this has been ongoing for over a year.

Who knows what part in particular angered Alonso but the bit which would have particularly angered me personally would be questioning my desire to get back into a car after an accident.

I'd also be more than a bit aggrieved that someone who is paid to comment on my performance at work decided to ignore 2 of my best years performance wise in 2013 and 2014 and declare to the world I haven't been performing at my best since 2011/12 and should just quit.

Maybe your emotional investment in Johnny is blinding you to how disrespectful some of the things he wrote are.

We seem to have different meanings when it comes to being disrespectful.

You have given one fact – he has not scored more points than he did in 2012 and one comment which I suppose someone on the sidelines would be “angered” by, but a professional with 15+ years in F1 and two time WDC should just shrug it off and ignore it. However I would not interpret either as disrespectful.

And LOL at your emotional/Johnny comment but there are no second prizes and it shows your true character.

Perhaps you and the rest of the boys could sing along to this while waiting for the race to start.

What's your meaning of disrespectful?.

It's a fact he hasn't scored more points than in 2012 since 2012 but that's not what Herbert or I said was it?.  And it's disrespectful to suggest a driver lacks desire to get back into a car after an accident no matter who is saying it.

My true character?. Bit sensitive for a man saying people should just shrug off what they read isn't it?.

what did he say and where?

It was on Sky sports track parade and when Johnny was interviewing Alonso Massa kept saying "You think he should retire"?, and such.

Johnny kept play fighting with Massa as well it was quite funny.

Meh, Alo shouldn't have made peace with him that easily, we all know they are going to beat the retirement/not motivated enough drum during the whole year.

Why repeat the same thing again and again?

Regarding your last comment, what are you meaning there ? Am I to presume that you are actually saying,' Why don't you just accept that I am correct about this situation and you are wrong.' ? Regarding the comment before that, I have NOT been repeating myself in this thread. I have not been saying the same thing again and again. Regarding your first comment, it's lacking correct grammar, so it's possible to interpret it in different ways. I have told you that I am not emotionally invested in the fortunes of Alonso, and you have decided that I am lying or deceiving myself. So what am I to take from that ? If you are going to disbelieve my words here, then frankly there is no point in speaking to you again, as there is every chance that you shall decide that I am lying to myself or yourself.

And LOL at your emotional/Johnny comment but there are no second prizes and it shows your true character.

The suggestion that you think you can see somebody's 'true character' after reading scant words on a public forum says something about you.

Well that was a complete backtrack by Herbert, either he is a liar or it's confirmation he was just stirring it to cause controversy.

''I don't want you to retire Fernando'' - If you don't then why the f*** have you spent the last two weeks saying just that you halfwit?? :smoking: :smoking: :smoking:

I think stirring it to get people talking/viewing - which is the modus operandi for most newspapers these days as well.

So...it seemed like FA had a pretty good weekend for a guy who's missed so much time in the car and who was in pain.
