According to Germanys Tagesschau Nico Rosberg is also involved in the "PanamaPapers" scandal.

For his driving duties he is not contracted to Mercedes or AMG, but to a offshore company from the British Virgin Islands.

Mercedes and Nicos management refused to comment on this.

The documents did not contain any indications that the Daimler AG or Nico Rosberg had committed an offense with the offshore-construction.

I don't think anyone is suggesting it is illegal.

But unethical at a time when everyone else is having public services etc cut...

I posted this a while ago in the silly season thread already. I could imagine that Mercedes dont want to do the next contract negotiation with this system, considering the bad press they will get here.

Interestingly a German F1 journo tweeted around 30 minutes ago that the Rosberg management confirmed that everything is legit, but now he deleted this tweet again.

Well, if it is allowed...don't know if this is the right place to discuss it though

A lot of offshore stuff, whilst ethically debatable, is not illegal.

Most, if not all, professional athletes have something like that. Gilles Villeneuve had one in the 1980s called Caracer and based in Switzerland. It's in Gerry Donaldson's book.

I wonder whether they have leaked that Rosberg saving a child-story yesterday on purpose. Same day as the Panama-papers were published.

I can't believe that a super rich multinational F1 driver would be so greedy about taxes....... It's unheard of.

literally every single driver that makes over a mill uses a shell company for tax purposes. Hardly news. Everybody from movie stars, rock stars, athletes, anybody making lump sums uses that  type of structure.

I really do not understand why they just do not pay their taxes ... they are already rich, it is not going to hurt them... so why?? All it does is give the common man a reason to dislike them cause we do pay our taxes and we feel them a lot more...

You don't get rich by paying bills.

I expect most people given the choice between - "would you like to pay more tax or less tax?" would choose the less tax option every time.

If you put your savings in an ISA, it's tax free. Are you telling me you would rather take it out of the ISA and put the money in a normal account where the interest is taxed? Moving your savings to an ISA is called tax avoidance.

Tax evasion is illegal, but is totally different.

Moving your money to a country which charges less tax is the same as the ISA scenario but with bigger sums involved.

I doubt this will distract Rosberg but who knows, he was quite shaken up mentally after Spa-gate.

I just want Vettel to have a clean race, I think Merc may get their ass handed to them anyway

Many drivers, current and past, live in tax havens like Monaco or Switzerland. You can argue whether it's morally acceptable until the cows come home (which they may well if you live in Switzerland), but it's not illegal.

Maybe Rosberg should retire.

There doesn't seem to be anything to this story other than it's something from a driver's private life revealed that he didn't choose to reveal. So, in line with past threads that comment on drivers' private lives, I am closing this. There is a thread in our Paddock Club for discussing more general issues arising from this tax leak, which can be found here: http://forums.autosp...-panama-papers/

If you believe there is some aspect here that is directly relevant to RC, please get in touch by PM.
