After getting a rid of our beloved elimination qualifying system F1 reverted back to the 2015 system. This also featured a 'rain' delay and - oh wonder - no Mercedes front row lock out! Did you heard that Bernie? A Mercedes is starting LAST!

3bf91017edcb6813098495b529f72c4e04e5b8ae

After a gearbox change and PU failure in qualifying defending world champion Lewis Hamilton has to start from the back of the grid. Will it be his first race without T1 incident of the season and can he make his way through the field? Meanwhile team mate Nico Rosberg qualified on pole and starts with soft tyres into the race. Suppostely an advantage. But can Ricciardo and especially the Ferrari challenge him stil for the victory? Also, as usual a very close fight in the midfield is expected.

The grid

  1. Rosberg
  2. Ricciardo
  3. Raikkonen
  4. Vettel
  5. Bottas
  6. Kvyat
  7. Perez
  8. Sainz
  9. Verstappen
  10. Massa
  11. Alonso
  12. Button
  13. Hulkenberg
  14. Grosjean
  15. Ericsson
  16. Nasr
  17. Magnussen
  18. Gutierrez
  19. Palmer
  20. Haryanto
  21. Wehrlein
  22. Hamilton

Weather (Ubimet): Clouds will move out of the area overnight with a brisk northwesterly wind. A moderate wind should remain in the area on Sunday during the morning hours, but will gradually decrease throughout the day. Skies will be primarily clear with only a few high clouds later in the day. Visibility will also increase as drier air moves over the Shanghai area. For the race, we expect mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the low 20s.

I predict Nico coming home 20s ahead of whichever Ferrari doesn't suffer from an exploding turbo, would be a much bigger gap if Nico doesn't spend 40 laps cruising about conserving fuel and tires.

This could be a great race. I know it will probably end up with Rosberg running away, but with the tyre deg and cars out of position it could be very interesting.

I got a feeling it is Haryanto's or Palmer's turn to smack into Hamilton at turn 1.

I'm sure Bottas will find a way to get a crappy start and plow into Lewis at T1.

Bottas seems to be quickly becoming the new Maldonado.

Hamilton will most likely get by Bottas at some stage of the race. Let see if Hamilton is patient enough not to force the issue.

Your first four is probable but no way does Massa get up there. Unfortunately Williams don't have the pace anymore. Alonso will definitely beat them.

Ok I will throw in my expected top six without any techical gremlins or safety cars:

1. Rosberg

2. Kimi

3. Vettel

4. Bottas

5. Ricciardo

6. Hamilton

Bottas and Ricciardo could also finish another way around.

If he doesn't sort his start out I wouldn't worry about it, they'll be at T3 by the time Lewis gets to T1.

Should be worth watching to see Hamilton fight to the front. I think a podium is quite possible if the race is chaotic enough.

Right, my despair at Lewis suffering a PU failure is over, now I'm ready to watch him scythe through the field, now let's hope FOM shows it instead of focusing on whatever midfield train catches their attention.

I think it will be a great race with Lewis coming through,McLarens fighting in the points,Danny Ric up there annoying the other Merc and the Ferrari's hopefully.

I'm cautiously optimistic and not just because i'm wired with painkillers and doing an all nighter here in the UK through not just the race but the Old Firm game in the afternoon before stumbling through to my bed and falling into hibernation until about Wednesday.

Will be an awesome start to the race.
1. Ric, Vet, Rai could all possibly pass Ros into the first corner.
2. Ham on the charge.
3. What can McLaren do?

I see Rosberg taking this easily. Even if he gets passed into T1, which without a poor start I don't see why it would happen - the difference between the Ultra Soft, Super Soft and Soft is about half that between the Soft, Medium and Hard - he can run a much longer, harder first stint whilst everyone else will be nursing Tue Super Soft's.

We'll see. I feel the media hype Ferrari up so much now it's hard not to buy into it and feel Mercedes are under more pressure than they really are.

Ricciardo to win?

I think he might take an early lead with Raikkonen in second. And I think the pace will be better than practise. So with my out there prediction I will say:

1. Ricciardo

2. Raikkonen

3. Rosberg

4. Vettel

5. Kvyat

6. Hamilton

In any case, I think even the front will be good racing today.

Ferrari to have another engine failure on the warm up lap. Remaining Ferrari and Rosberg to take each other out on the first corner. Hamilton storms through the field but Ricciardo holds him off.

1.Ricciardo

2. Hamilton

3. Bottas

Winning an F1 race is never easy, especially given the current tire situation. Nico a well deserved win, ahead of a Ferrari and an RB (which drivers TBD). Lewis .... unlike some Hamilton fans who have lost hope. this non-fan predicts a brilliant 4th, better if a Ferrari fails.

Given that it's possible to overtake here and relative performance of Mercedes..then 5th is absolute minimum for Hamilton (if there's no special drama).

After a spontaneous night out I've only just got in. 5AM so no point in trying to get a couple of hours sleep, i'll only oversleep and wake up around lap 30 and be in the worst mood for the rest of the day.

Time to put the coffee on and tune in for the track parade for a change. Looking forward to see if Fernando throws Herbert off the back of the truck whilst reminding him he's not a world champion.

Expecting a straight forward Nico win but you never know. Hoping for a safety car two thirds into the race once Lewis has hopefully made it into the top 5-6 to make for a more interesting finish. Rooting for Kimi to have a strong race and finish ahead of Seb for a change too.

Race Weather

Rain further inland is no threat to Shanghai until after dark tonight, leaving it 21°C and mostly sunny apart from some high cloud, feeling cooler than previously in the weekend despite a similar ambient temperature due to a 5-10mph wind from the north.

With no finishes, it's quite hard to rank them :)'

I think Hamilton have a good chance here to be fair. The Merc will pass cars quite easily, especially with DRS after L2. And if the SS's only lasts 4-6 laps in the race, he'll suddenly be in a fairly good position.

ýeah, what will be interesting to see is, if Mercedes is willing to sacrifice the lead. He can run longer, but he will most certainly be slower than those cars following, and could drop back behind the Ferrari at the time of his pit stop some 7-8 laps later. He would have an advantage later on again, but I can't really see Mercedes willing to see this happen - so it could force him to stop early as well

Pirelli said last week that the (then) 14 cars that don't make Q3 have their extra Q3 set destroyed but that table still lists the extra set, and I believe the wording of the rules supports the table. I don't know what to believe.

Yeah, unless you just arrived at home in an absurdly drunk shape like I just did.

Think I might have to skip this one. But Rosberg's got it in the bag in my opinion.

Viewing method for this race has changed. I no longer have access to my English language station (NBCSN), so I'm going to view on Univision (Spanish US network) that I do have access to with BBC radio providing me with useful race information that I can understand. I expecting the two to be many seconds, even a minute, out of sync. Unpredictable which will be in front of the other based on my experiences doing this kind of thing watching soccer matches.

I thought Williams were doing quite well financially?
