Didn't see this coming! Nice to see him come back to F1 in some capacity.

Surprised to read this.

He have been his own man / company for some +25 years, he and Lowdon set up and new team in LMP2 now being at Toro Rosso will make him an employee for the first time in a long time. I think this is a sound move by Toro Rosso, Manor GP may not have panned out, but he as an individual brings a lot of positive to the table.

Interesting to see how he juggles this with LMP2

Seems to me to be an odd move.... is Tost suddenly not cutting the mustard in Red Bull's eyes?

They essentially have a director of racing already - his name is Helmut Marko. In effect, all the Red Bull drivers answer to him ahead of their Team Principals.

Booth's resignation last year was a loss to the sport, but what a guy who's been his own man for decades is doing joining a midfield team basically to be an 'employee emeritus' mystifies me.

He joins as a consultant, which means he's not just an employee. Kind of how Pat Symmonds came back in F1.

Yes but Symmonds bought managerial and technical expertise to the table, when Manor needed it, and later when Williams desperately needed it. Symmonds had been to the top of the sport and knew how to win (and how to cheat, as an aside).

Manor never achieved much under Booth, aside from getting to the grid. Tost has run Toro Rosso efficiently and at-budget for years, so what could Booth possibly bring to the Toro Rosso table that they don't already have? About the only thing I can think of is a fresh set of eyes, but I would have thought there are better people qualified to push TR to a higher level than John Booth.

A genuine surprise for once.

A good hire for Toro Rosso, though it naturally raises a few questions as to why he's been given a role now. You wouldn't think the team would need a director of racing consultancy role, they've been going for a long while even under Red Bull ownership, unless this is a move towards a different Booth-led future. Franz Tost is certainly heading towards retirement age, so perhaps he isn't long for the paddock. Intriguing.

Or, of course, Booth is just doing some part-time work in between his WEC duties.

Don't know why they hired him, i know it's a tradition to always treat true sport passionates as gods, but frankly Manor has been doing more than great with Fizgerald alone.

I thought he was an employee all of his last season? (Hence his departure through resignation).

Booth may not have achieved a world championship but he kept a team on the grid on a shoe string budget, that in itself is an big achievement and shouldn't be under estimated!

Booth ran successful teams for years, his entry into F1 was based on that, the fact that the rules promised were came to fruition can not be blamed on him or any of the other new teams.

Would that not be Colin Kolles job?

Judging by the Autosport article it seems his job is going to be around sharpening up trackside operations. We've been seeing an increasing number of high profiled tech guys get hired by teams to do a job like this and my understanding is that Booth's background is more on the engineering side of things, Lowden was the day-to-day manager.

Strange move.... As nice and Booth may be, there's no denying that Manor have flourished since he departed. Although I concede he did put some of the building blocks in place, but Manor F1 didn't bring much to the table that could possibly help a semi-successful team like TRosso... Very strange.

Wonder if Lowdon will pop up somewhere, he always came across quite well.

Tinfoil hat on ;), and some rumours and speculations via Google translate:

"Speaking of turbulence in the teams, the appointment of former Manor boss John Booth at Toro Rosso has caused some raised eyebrows. Eje has good contacts in the team and has heard from multiple sources that there are a bit of complaints regarding Booths arrival. It is speculated that Max Verstappen's father Jos has had a finger in the game, possibly in the aftermath of what happened in Australia when Max got a lot of criticism internally for his behavior. It might be that Jos wants to outmaneuver one or more persons to regain the balance of power in the team, and has done this by going over the heads of several leading figures in Toro Rosso and how this unfolds will be exciting to follow."

Complete BS, who the f is Jos Verstappen to manoeuvre anything ? Besides the guys in charge (Tost-Marko) are not really docile people.
