I will be in the Dresden area next month and if time permits will make a visit to the Saxon Vehicle Museum in Chemnitz. Is there anything in Chemnitz related to the Auto Union race cars that can still be seen? An old factory or office building, test track or other bits of nostalgia?

I've been to Germany many times, but the former East is probably the part I like best, almost without exception the locals are pleased to see you, though not a great deal of English spoken. We've experienced many examples of them going well out of their way to be helpful and make our experience memorable. Most of their Autobahnen are new and superb, but some of the minor roads are an experience, narrow and heavily cambered with the tarmac wearing away in patches to reveal the pre WW2 cobbles underneath. In that and many other respects, it's still like travelling back in time several decades, but we love the place. The only good museum I found on a visit to Chemnitz a couple of years ago was the Sächsisches-Industriemuseum, Saxony Industrial Museum, which covers everything industrial and mechanical with a decent car section, but no Auto Unions back then. If you go to Dresden, they also have a good Transport Museum, it's almost worth a visit to view the decoration on the exterior, more trains than cars inside, but several interesting Skodas and Tatras, the Czech Republic isn't far away. The way that Dresden has been rebuilt and restored is most impressive, buildings like die Frauenkirche were still nothing more than a heap of rubble not so many years ago, but it is a truly wonderful thing today, it looks as good as new.

True, sadly I wasn't able to fit that one in, old cars aren't quite top of my dear wife's sightseeing list so I sometimes have to rein in my own enthusiasm, but I think that's a proper automobile museum, and not too far from Chemnitz. I was told that the opening hours can sometimes be limited, so wise to check on that before going out of your way.
Your nearest & dearest can sometimes surprise you though, on a visit to the Schlumpf Museum in Mulhouse a few years ago, she was so interested in the recorded commentaries on all the exhibits, that she was happy to spend almost 6 hours (including a leisurely lunch) in the place.
