Kicks off this weekend at Hockenheim.

What everyone's thoughts on this season?

Who'll come out on top?

I will probably need the whole season to understand the new performance ballast rules and I will probably be angry about some team orders again. And probably this thread will be only on page 1 this season if we have a similar controversity as last year......

Who'll come out on top? I think Audi has again the best package, but as we saw last year this doesn't mean anything.

DTM seems to be a toss up every year. Honestly could not tell you who's going to win, as he could very easily finish dead last in the standings. BMW and Audi will be the main front runners, with a Merc sneaking it's way to a title challenge.

Well it's almost impossible to predict what will happen in DTM isn't it? I'm rooting for Green to get the title that he deserves. Also hoping da Costa or Glock can outshine Wittmann. Will also be interesting to see who Mercedes main man will be this year.

I'd love to see di Resta mount a challenge again.

Won't be popular on here though.

Nico Muller surprisingly on pole for race 1. Mortars 2nd. Wickens 3rd. BMW look off the pace again.

Good times! And Ocon 12th, not too shabby.

They seem very accident prone right now. Must be race rustiness. Green is having a bit of a nightmare.

I actually like DTM. High caliber drivers. And Hockenheim is always great.

Only trouble I have with it is the fragility of the cars. Carbon and rubbing are not good bedfellows.

That looked more like a dodgems race than a racing cars race.

I agree with Sheepmachine, it might be rustiness.

My problem with it is the ballast. They act like it's so important which manufacturer wins and yet they make Audi 10kg heavier because they built the fastest car. If you're gonna handicap the faster cars then what's the point of having multiple manufacturers in the first place :/

(forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong, I don't follow it that closely)

Thing is it's pretty much a spec series so they want equal performance in every car, but the styling is based on each manufacturers road car. So it's not really a case of who builds the fastest car. They all have same spec engine and same monocoque.

What's going on with the coverage in the UK?

I set this afternoons race to record(as well as tomorrows) and it seems to have been removed from the schedule.

Haha at the time I thought exactly the same thing. Wasn't even clumsy, it was a good RX move.

Good pace from ocon.

Only 2 tenths off Wickens on his very first qualy despite the lack of running.

Then he was caught up by his own making into usual first lap incident at hairpin.

Esteban is not satisfied with his pace despite getting praise from the team.

He wants to get the two tenths he needs in qualy pace in order to fight in front.

He said that he will be more careful in first laps from now on in DTM despite feeling he was not completely at fault .

So the performance ballast has played a big part so far. Yesterday there were 6 Audi's in the top 9 in quali, and today there is no Audi in the top 10.

I think he's got damage which is what is probably hampering him.

Why is Tomczyk driving with #100? Is it allowed to use numbers outside the 1-99 range in DTM?

di Resta was in a race by himself.

Shame Paffett got a penalty as he seemed to have the speed.

Shame for Ocon when we see the speed of Paffett.

At least he knows he has the speed despite the lack of running.

If he did not use his car as a battering ram, it would probably help  :rotfl:

I  didn't closely folow interseason but with the new ballast rules, DTM became a lottery and the fight between crews, brands and drivers lost its interest. Mercedes and Audi are already spending too much in F1 and WEC,  and the three brands agree for artificial show.  I guess it's the price of cost reduction and frozen development.

Why do they have performance ballast at all??

Aside from the bodywork - which according to what I have read is homologated so that there is no clear advantage, everything is basically spec..,

WTF do they need the ballast for in a spec series???

It is spec regarding engine and monocoque. The only differences are the bodywork, which are homologated, as you say. BMW actually had a lighter starting weight than the other two and I believe they were also granted a slightly greater DRS(only by a few millimetres). But it is also difficult to get a true Balance of performance, especially in such a tight field where a few tenths make a big difference. And so I guess none of the manufacturers want to find themselves left behind. The idea is to spread the victories and unpredictable racing.

The Ballast rules are actually a lot better this year than last year. This year it is applied after qualifying and its applied to the manufacturers and not individual drivers. So for example all Audi's drivers carry the same weight as each other. But last year it was applied to individual drivers, to punish the quicker ones, which is a bit too gimmicky IMO.

Hopefully a better race this afternoon.
