Jacky Stewart claims today in AMuS that a big, well-known company will come into Formula One as a global sponsor soon. Interesting

People talk about #F1 in crisis but met big global brand rep today looking at sponsor move. Huge commercial news - and I'm sworn to secrecy

Jon Noble ‏@NobleF1  4h4 hours ago
.@mymadtwatdiary Sorry. I'm totally sworn to secrecy but it puts a lie to claims no new sponsors looking at #F1. It may or may not happen

Talk about moving the goalposts. When most people say "F1 is in crisis", they don't mean "CVC are struggling to attract sponsors to put on their trackside billboards".

What a completely pointless couple of tweets from Noble, makes vague insinuations of a big sponsor, claims he's held to secrecy then covers himself with the may or may not happen disclaimer.

Based on the current state of F1 I wouldn't be surprised if the "big global brand" is turning out to be something like Blackberry.....

Given how far F1 has degraded, it is probably Poundland.

Is this going to be like the massive Coca-Cola deal from a few years back?

I remember when Renault had a massive sponsor lined up early in 2009.

I remember Honeywell was going to Lotus in...2012?

Been hearing more and more (since Oz GP) that @Heineken is to enter F1 as global sponsor from Spanish GP onwards. Let's see...

Heineken moving (some of?) their mega bucks from champions league to F1? Well, bring it on!

Oh, yeah, I'd forgot about their campaigning against booze sponsorship in motor sports. They not going to like this, if true.

So, it's going to be track side hoardings like Rolex etc,  I imagine and not naming rights.

Eh? Trackside advertising with the money going straight to CVC's pocket and not to the teams or circuit owners? Not much to cheer about there.

Well, he did say he was sworn to secrecy. Which probably makes him Sir Noble of the Ecclestone Insiders. His knowledge would be far too complex for us normal viewers to comprehend at this time. :stoned:

Anyway, with the way alcohol has been coming under increasing scrutiny - not least with regards to public advertisement - it sounds rather curious if Heineken were to make such a big move at this point.

Heineken historically only does series(not team) deals and I'm pretty sure had a policy, at least until now, about 'no action sports' of which motorsport would qualify. They don't link Drinking + Action Activities.

Maybe F1/FOM/CVC is going to railroad the promoters and force an Official Beer on them. Though that assumes they were nice enough to let the tracks keep the food and drink sales to begin with...

Good summary of different journalism styles there. My best guess is that Zak Brown is involved, who recently joined the Motorsport.com parent company in some role, of which Noble is their reporter. So he was introduced to some mover and shaker, or maybe just a VIP on a corporate jolly, and felt the need to either boast or do a bit of free PR for F1 about how everything is Totally Awesome.

What a time to be alive.

Isn't Red Bull still promoter for WRC while being a main sponsor of the factory VW team?

Maybe Heineken are going to launch a new energy drink that will take a vastly substantial stake of the current market.

maybe the team deal will be RBR, or Fi replacing kingfisher, or Haas...or STR. No way for the other 7 teams.

I moved some of the context to this announcement which began in the 'new owner for f1' thread to here where it made more sense.

Doubt they will sponsor RBR or STR, not sure whether both an energy drink and a beer brand are a good match on one car.

I love the way that alcohol sponsorship seems appropriate, whilst tobacco sponsorship crosses the line...

Some comment on that from Jean Todt in this Autosport piece last year:

With three teams in F1 carrying alcohol branding - Williams (Martini), Force India (Smirnoff and Kingfisher), and McLaren (Johnnie Walker) - Eurocare highlighted the fact an advert flashed up every five seconds during coverage.
Todt, however, has again made clear while the FIA can only do so much via its 'Action for Road Safety' campaign, it is out of his organisation's hands to ban alcohol sponsorship.

There is a big difference between a alcoholic drink and tobacco which is pretty much deadly poison.

Smoking and driving wins hands down over drinking and driving. Though the "drink responsibly campaign is not without merit"

So now we have 2 Beer F1 sponsors, Shinga and Heineken.  :p

Alcohol brands are facing the same problems tobacco sponsors had ~25 years ago. They are allowed less and less advertising and are delegated to the late hours. With F1, you can advertise during the day due to liveries.

But I hope they do trackside sponsoring. Then we have green tracks again. :p

This seems like a really terrible idea.

Any team that accepts that money can easily get blackmailed into voting the way the sports owners want. "vote the way I want or you'll lose your sponsorship"

How is that different to any other sponsor? Are you suggesting that sponsors should be banned from the sport?

OT, but if you drink and smoke heavily every day the poison in the beer will probably kill you first.

Back to topic. Interesting that the trend is that a $100m + sponsorship budget is more effectively spent with FOM than directly with a team (yes I know Heineken want to spend a bit of the money on a team) but since when did static boards around tracks create more engagement than on a car and driver. Wierd. Can only imagine some of the teams have become rather precious about rights...

The other sponsors aren't linked to deals that the sports owners have.

Gives Bernie a lot of power if he can start twisting the teams sponsorship deals around in the background and decide which of his favourite teams will get that money.

Everybody in the Netherlands already knows Heineken and it's sold so globally that I don't know if they matter he's Dutch.
