Nobody's worried that Max turning up and winning so soon harms F1's stature?

Vettel won his first race after about the same amount of time. Michael Schumacher too. And Senna. It's always been possible.

Max Verstappen is very young in years but he's had an unusual racing upbringing, like Valentino Rossi.

Absolutely incredible from Max "Attack" Verstappen! Unbelievable!

Well Done Max. That will motivate Daniel even more to try beat him.

Wow, just wow. Was beaten in qualifying but made the tyres and the race work for him and was good under pressure.

I'm talking about the way he did it though, not just that he won at a young age (which is already notable). Less testing, less single seater experience, first race after switching teams mid-season, beating a veteran teammate in the process.

Verstappen > Ricciardo > Vettel > Raikkonen > Montoya > Ralf Schumacher > Button > Hamilton > Alonso > Trulli > Frentzen > Hill > Senna.

Best driver ever, confirmed. :p

Great win by Verstappen, but sort of gifted to him today. Nevertheless, kept an experienced guy like Kimi behind with ease, great job!

How Daniil must be steaming under that helmet to see Max win the race in his seat in his car! Daniil hopefully will use that negative pressure as something positive, he needs to start beating Carlos as soon as he can pull off some miraculous overtaking attempts and show that he can still do just as well as Max has.

It would be interesting if Ferrari would make an offer he can't refuse and let us all know what contracts are worth these days.

It's just incredible. RBR may have an accurate simulator, but this was Verstappen's first days in the car and he was matching Ricciardo's pace right from the start of the first practice session. As far as I know he was never even close to putting the car outside the track all weekend. He then ends up leading the race – by just a second – with 22 laps to go, and on old tyres he withstands the pressure from Räikkönen's Ferrari and wins the bloody race! Absolutely flawless!

Edit: On second thoughts, maybe he locked up into T1 in Friday practice and straight-lined T2. Nevertheless, I'm still shaking my head in disbelief.

You seem not to be a racer. Money is nice, but winning is everything, even if you get only a few cents for it.

Sportsmen can get quite competitive about the money they earn. Still, the time to do that is once you've proved you're one of the best in the field.

He didn't go out there and grab it all by himself, but he was driving the 3rd fastest car on the grid and held right onto Ricciardo's tail the entire time before the strategy split.  And then held off consistent pressure from Kimi(in a faster car) for the entire final stint while a win was on the horizon in his debut for the team.

It was a pretty impressive showing regardless of him winning.

Hope Max's mother was in Barcelona to witness max triumph!!

Ricciardo can cry as much as he wants, but the truth is, he didn't look at all faster than Verstappen in the race. Quite the opposite actually.

He actually had the 5th fastest car because Kimi was quicker, he just couldn't find a way passed and Vettel was faster than both of them, he was due to catch them but Daniel tried an overtake on Sebastien and cost both of them over a second in lap time in turn 1.

Why it was so exciting is because Max held on to his car and kept his nerve in a slower car to beat Kimi to the flag.

This guy could be WDC before he's 20. Incredible.

Or even 19 years old if he has a dominant car next year and wins the title before his 20th birthday in September.

When you look at Red Bull's ability to bring talented young drivers into F1, you could argue that they pay drivers their market value.

I'm comparing them relative to the rest of the grid. Unless your argument is that Hamilton/Alonso/Raikkonen/etc are overpaid, which I can understand.

I think this is a very healthy thing for F1. I think it's very impressive that Verstappen was so competitive, and able to manage the tyres while running competitive laptimes. It's a race that Red Bull could have won with either driver, however, it would have been understandable if Max had needed time to get to grips with the car and had been a little off the pace this weekend, in which case Red Bull would have been fighting two against one, and Ferrari would probably have won the race by splitting the strategy. So he deserves the full credit for the way he performed, even though he did get the better end of the bargain when they split the strategy between him and Ricciardo. I couldn't understand why they went so aggressive in bringing Daniel in early, and was surprised and frustrated to see Vettel follow him in.

I won't try to hide my disappointment as a Ferrari fan. By matching Max's strategy, Ferrari ensured that Kimi wouldn't be able to use his pace because there was no way to pass him. If you're trying to get past a slower car, either stop first, or run significantly longer thereby creating an opportunity with fresher tyres later on. Ferrari did neither.

None of that should undermine a near flawless drive. This kid's certainly shown he's the real deal. Nothing seems to phase him.

I'm not usually into the whole omen thing but I actually believe it with this guy! Yes he is overhyped but is he worthy of his seat? Abso-effing-lutely.

Nice to see a new young talent emerging in F1. It also has to be said the Red Bull young driver programme is remarkably successful. Full credit to Helmut Marko. I doubt Red Bull will contemplate departing F1 any time soon now.

Well, fair enough. I was very sceptical about someone coming into F1 at that age and felt (last week) Kvyat was hard done by, but that shows what idiots like me know. Under pressure from a much more experienced driver for 20-odd laps on deteriorating tyres, and he didn't put a single wheel wrong, or even give the slightest hint of being flustered. That's not an inherited win, that's a very hard-fought, supremely taken win.

He wasn't part of the RB young driver program though but yes kudos to RB for offering him a race seat in F1 after half a year of drving a racing car.

I don't think this record will ever be broken so yes history was written today.
