Was watching the GP 2 Race and it just hit me; what if the cars turned left after the hairpin, rounded the small park at Portier and got a longer straight through the tunnel?
I like the current circuit so this is just a thought.
Extended Monaco Circuit at Portier; another DRS zone?

They won't allow DRS in the tunnel, because of the ceiling and the fact it is not very straight.

Back when DRS use was free in qualifying, they made an exception - after driver demands - to ban it in the tunnel.

There have, historically, been vague notions mooted about turning left before Portier and running up north (including one proposal from 1972 that would have crossed into France at one point), but they never came to anything.

it would make the entry to the chicane after the tunnel to dangerous no doubt as well

Speeds will get too high at the end of the tunnel.

They would have to put a chicane in at the start of the tunnel, which kind of negates the point of it.

Like ANF said, No.

On tv the tunnel seems to be only a 'kink'. But in reality it's really quite a sharp corner. There is no runoff and you have the braking zone after it in broad daylight. For safety reasons, i could understand they would not allow DRS there.

I've checked on the map. It would make the straight 60 m longer. That's not really going to make any difference at all.

Yeah, it seems like they are just trying to fit more seats in, which is sad.

I don't think that was GenJackRipper's idea behind it.

Maybe they could loop through the McDonald's drive through before entering the tunnel...
I can't believe there is a Maccas in Monaco. It's like putting a finger painting in the louvre...

McDonalds is now the most popular restaurant of choice in France. And Monaco is just France in fancy shoes.

It seems appropriate for Monaco nowadays. The place is almost as gaudy and tasteless as Dubai, any class the town once had was lost years ago.

I first went there in 1970.
It didn't have much class then, just gaudy blinginess. But it WAS the 1970s!

Unfortunately the McDonald's doesn't have a drive through (also it is in Fontenville as opposed to Monte Carlo, unless there are 2 :0 the horror at that thought) Maybe they could extend the track through the tunnels under the palace and round the Fontenville harbour as well :-D

There are two McDs in Monaco - one on the inside of Portier (finally, we know why Senna parked it there....) and one on Ave Albert II in Fontvielle. Neither is a drive through because in a country the size of Monaco, who needs one?
There are a lot of options to have a longer track but none of them are very attractive. Monaco isn't a very picturesque place unfortunately.

If I remember my Evelyn Waugh correctly, Monaco was much the same in the 1920s.

Not everyone in Monaco is mega rich. People got to eat.
I'm okay with the current format. No need in dressing up this pig of a track to accommodate passing.
I just understand that when we travel to:
Monaco
Spain
Brazil
That we simply will not much passing.

Apart from the fact that I think this whole thing is a bad idea, you ~are~ forgetting to factor in the much faster corner that would lead to the longer straight.
(Which makes it even more of a bad idea, of course)
