I wasn't sure if i should post this here or in the nostagia forum - sorry if i messed it up.

Now then, i found this really great pic with Ayrton in the old Nordscheife and i'd like to know which McLaren this is:

https://www.google.g...ooTCZy8rUioc4M:

It obviously should be one of the ones Ayrton drove during his 3 title defending years - 1989, 1991 and 1992.

So, it's either the McLaren MP4/5A (1989), the MP4/6 (1991) or the MP4/7 (1992). I couldn't distinguish though each car from another- i don't have an eye for technical details. Maybe you guys can help me?

Thanks for your time ;)

Pretty sure its a MP4/6

Narrow air intakes and the blacked out lower portion of the tub are the obvious clues.

The MP4/7 is similar but the tub is all white.

I would say the MP4/6. It looks like the 1991 car to me. Also, I remember the graffiti going down on the track - it was pro Gachot graffiti, just after he was jailed and that was in 1991.

Correct. The MP4/6 was McLaren's last male moulded chassis, with a lightweight glass fibre bodywork on top. You often see photos of the McLarens in the pits with the one piece body removed. The black is the tub itself.

The MP4/7 was their first female mould chassis, where the outside of the chassis is the smooth side and forms the aerodynamic shape.

Could you expand a bit on this? It sounds interesting. McLaren were voicing their support? Senna was?

Before Spa 1991 Gachot went to jail, I believe some incident with a taxi driver. That gave Schumacher the opportunity for his first GP in the Jordan.

Since Gachot is from Belgium the fans put graffiti on the track supporting him, which would mean that the picture does not show the Nordschleife but Spa during the 1991 GP weekend.

Oh I am a doofus. I misread and figured it was on the car, given Senna wasn't above putting stickers on his cars to make comments or jibes. I wasn't looking at the track. Thanks.

I watched some of that race from that very corner. Didn't approve of the graffiti though. Dan Gurney for President is the only acceptable track graffiti.

Ah I forgot what a protest looked like before social media came along, these days we would have a twitter campaign or facebook "likes" I reckon Bernie must have hated it, messing up the track and taking peoples concentration away from his beloved Rolex logos.

Definitely not the Nordschleife.

It couldn't have been the Nordschleife, which wasn't used for F1 after 1976. Couldn't have been the Nuburgring GP-Strecke either - in '89. '91 and .92 the German GP was held at Hockenheim!

It couldn't have been a RACE, but surely a demo run. Don't know if Senna ever did that.

Nick did it...

I don't think there were any contemporary F1 cars that ran on Nordschleife after 1976 until Nick ran in 2007. Michael Schumacher ran in 2013 in a Mercedes, but I think that might be it.

Thanks each and every one for your answers, massively appreciated ;)

I was 99.99% sure it WASN'T the 1992 car, because that one had a curved nose, whilst the one in the pic has a straight one.

I assumed it was from a random test on the old Nurburgring track, though- didn't imagined it was from Spa :p

Thanks for your great insight

I don't know about Senna, but these chaps definitely made a protest!

They were Tag Heuer logos in the early 90s though  :stoned:

Fans could paint some graffiti on the tracks in the places like Spa or Imola until the early 90's .... those good old days to be a F1 fan :well:

Try that in Singapore. Graffiti in general is visual pollution, anti-civilization and should be punished and prevented by any means necessary. Graffiti on Spa or Nurburgring is inconceivable to me. Would that those vandals were around for the medical experiments in that neighbourhood.

Shouldn't that be "La Belgie est avec toi"?

Doesn't it say "Gachot the Belgian (f) is with you"?

Or is my GCSE French appallingly bad?

It must be:

La Belgique est avec toi (Belgium (the country) is with you) or
Les Belges sont avec toi ( The Belgians (people) are with you)

says me (dutch speeking Belgian :) )

Don't forget that in 1991 great part of the track was still public road, It's only from the early 2000's a closed circuit.
I've even driven with my corsa 1.4 trough La Source in the snow :)

I don't think so, in either case I was going with what I could see on the photos. :p

As far as I know their names for their country are België (Dutch), Belgique (French), and Belgien (German).

And the painted road is on the part of the track that was never a public road.  :rotfl:
