This appeared on Barrie Maskell's website some years ago and we really need to put it to rest.
It was printed on Barrie's page mentioning his visit to Rouen in 1970 where he didn't qualify and briefly talks of the last time he saw Denis Dayan, who was killed in that race. Hence my colleagues have long believed this was Dayan's crash. The thing is, we're struggling to match it up with the aftermath photos printed on the Denis Dayan website here: LINK
The armco style matches Rouen post-1968 when it was installed following Schlesser's crash. The damage to the car is about the same. HOWEVER...
First problem - there's nothing to suggest the car was launched skyward.
Secondly - there's nothing to suggest Dayan was ejected from the car. which appears to be happening in the photo.
Thirdly - There seems to be no damage to the armco as per the aftermath images.
Fourthly - When you look at the car still on track, it's hard to imagine where the cameraman would be positioned in order to see it from that angle.
And finally, those white sections behind look like the banners you would see on the banking at Turn 1, but YouTube footage shows there weren't any at Six Freres.that weekend.
I've ruled out it being the Salamon fatal crash having seen footage and Wollek's crash on lap 13 was at Scierie and he ended up in the trees. The surroundings in this photo don't match Scierie.
So what do you think it could be? Dayan? A crash in another event? Perhaps even a mocked-up, "faked" photo?
