Amidst all complaining (with good reason) I think one bright spot this season has been the return of proper 80s-90s 'over the shoulder' onboard footage, rather than just the ubiquitous tepid and tired T-cams.

While we've some some 'over the shoulder' cameras in recent years, almost of them them have been the same wide angle FOV, which exaggerates speed and distance between objects, as well as dampening the vibration...

Now FOM are using cameras with more 'realistic' FOV and we are seeing some great footage. Thumbs up

If I'm super picky I'd like it to be a little lower. But I do like it though

Great position... just in time for some head protection to be introduced and block it unfortunately.

They're certainly an improvement over the previous cameras. A lot less sterile and give more of a drivers-eye view.

I'm not a huge fan of it but it did a good job of showing the quick change of direction in turns 7, 8 and 9.

Is there a camera on each side? Or just on the left...

The position is fine but when I watched Rosberg's pole lap from that camera there was zero sense of speed or drama. Zero. I think the reason the footage from the 'good old days' is so exciting is because it was so bad, image breaking up all the time, low-res etc. It's all too clean and pure these days.

Shall we photoshop the Halo version?

The old cars had worse handling.  They just did.  Not just F1, but also Sportscar racing, Touring cars...  The handling of modern professional racing cars is just better.  Therefore in the olden days, or in amateur categories with less developed cars, they move around a lot more.

It's surely better than it has been, but what interest me is that the helmet cams from Champcar has never really been done since the series folded. The sense  of speed was impressive, much better than what we have now.

FOV might be 'realistic' but what I dislike about this view is that you can't see the right tire, so you can't see precisely how right hand corners are taken.

It's difficult to give too much credit for the camera position when you see how much better and innovative the cameras are in others series.

Agree wholeheartedly with the OP, these cams give a much better sensation of speed even if you see less of the track.

F1's camerawork is one of the biggest problems in the series in my opinion, I'd rather see less of the track and fewer Rolex adverts and get a better feel for how fast the cars are going, it's a major reason why it feels so sterile on TV sometimes.

What I'd like is more narrow angle off board shot to highlight the speed and therefore T cam shots to be much wider FOV:

https://youtu.be/7TvJV0xZwBs

The off board is too...clinical. Yes you can see lots but it really makes the cars look pedestrian. They're hitting 340kph at Hockenheim, higher than they ever have but you wouldn't know it.

If only F1 would have GoPro picture quality and not using these phone cameras.

I'm surprised we still have the t-cam structure on top of the cars. The cameras are so small these days.

They aren't 'new' ... however they are a massive improvement on those awful t-cams we've been subjected to for years and FOM seem to be opting for the drivers eye level cam more and more. A rare example of a good decision.

I don't think the cars look overly fast at this angle.

Another that was shown, was a repeat of Verstappen's start which had a camera underneath (?) or on the front wing. How big is that camera? Not as big as the T-cam right? And wouldn't a camera in those certain positions disturb the aero?

you see the handling more in this and I like it. These kind of thing add to viewers perception of how good they are. You really need to get the sense of speed which I think they could do even more for

all the teams have a camera mount that has to be fitted with a dumbie or real camera i think thats the rule. I like the t cam and also like the new old style cam on the side, it lessens the sense of speed but shows very well how hard the drivers are working the wheel. I hate the front wing cam as it doesn't add anything to the coverage.

Just watched bits of Germany 2011 on Sky. I wish they had these angles then as would have looked great. Even better in 2005.

Safety. A bullit cam in the helmet costs driver protection. On the helmet it can be nasty for the head as well.

The new camera angle is nice but I also like the roll hoop cam because it can provide steering wheel info as well as a view of both sides of the car.

Yes it can. In the most sterile way possible.
