Thanks Lift, that makes sense that they would use 2015 cars.

Interesting about the expected downforce levels next year vs what they are testing with.  Presumably this will have a massive impact on how much energy they put through the tyres, tyre wear, how quickly they get them up to temp etc etc.

Well I'll say it definitely takes some time to get used to seeing those tyres...but then again it was the same with 2009 cars, 2012 cars and 2014 cars... Im not saying the tyres look bad, but just odd....

Oh well the most important thing is that we just get better racing.

Kimi Raikkonen was in action for Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton and Pascal Wehrlein drove for Mercedes. Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo took to the track in the Red Bull.

Between them, a total of 331 laps of the Yas Marina circuit were completed.

Pirelli said approximately 96 different compounds were tested and now Pirelli must decide which one they will be used during the 2017 season.

"For the final test of the year, we had five F1 race drivers sample our 2017 prototypes as we completed the development programme with three cars at the same time," said Pirelli boss Paul Hembery.

"Now the hard work begins as we collate and analyse the results of our 24 days and approximately 12,000 kilometres of testing in order to define the tyres with which we will go racing next year.

"These will then be run on the actual 2017 cars for the first time during the official group tests next February.

the Wider Tires look great from above/Front/Rear, but these tiny 13 Inch Rims just look hideous.

13 inch rims look F1. Of course the tyres will look a bit fancier with printed sidewalls.

The only shame comparing these test cars vs. next years' is the unfortunate widening of the front wing.

A strange aspect of these Pirelli tyres (also the 2016 tyres) is that when under lateral load (not necessarily very high loads), the wheel rim often protrudes from the side wall.  I never seemed to get that impression with the Bridgestone's, Michelin's or Goodyear's.

It just occured to me that compound designations are..... weird. Given then we have 5 different compounds, one would expect that the "Medium" would, well, be the one in the middle. Alas, in typical F1 fashion the medium compound is actually the second hardest  :rotfl:  :rotfl:

Wouldn't it make much more sense to name the compounds SS - S - M - H - EH (extra-hard)?

There were four compounds prior to this year - SS-S-M-H.

They decided they wanted a compound softer than the supersoft. Hence they came up with the ultrasoft.

I know all this - but it would make much more sense if the names of the compounds were more accurate.

Let's say, if they are ordered on a scale from 1 to 5, it makes no sense to have three varations of the "Soft", and then one Medium and Hard.

I've heard that last years SS is technically this years US as the tyres have become generally more harder. So it's not like we would notice it if they are going to call the hard tyre 'Super Hard' and the medium tyre 'Hard', the soft tyre 'medium' and the SS tyre 'Soft'....

But I guess it looks better if you are adding an Ultrasoft tyre and not an Superhard tyre to your portfolio   ;)

Much as the new tyres look better, I still find it odd that however much road relevancy the engines must have, they're still send out on tyres that have sidewalls twice the profile of my 14 year old family saloon.

I really don't see the point in renaming the whole range of compounds, which we are all used to by name and colour, just to ensure that the middle compound is the medium. But each to their own.

The FIA has published the rules affecting tyre allocations for the first five events of the 2017 season -

For the first five events of the 2017 Championship season only, the normal team selection procedure for tyres will not be used as the deadline occurs before pre-season testing. For these events the supplier will allocate two sets of the hardest compound specification, four sets of the medium compound specification and seven sets of the softest compound specification to each driver.

No - it's 96 compounds over all of the tests. 331 laps during today's testing day.

Slightly OT, but that few seconds of video conveyed the speed and power of F1 more than anything seen over the weekend. F1 needs to work on its camera angles.

Does that turn entry looks faster than last weekend or it's just the camera angle?

I thought the Ultra Soft was based off the 2013 Super Soft?

I believe this to be correct.

For 2014 the tyre compounds basically went harder by one step.

Does anyone know what ailment obliged poor Lewis to withdraw from the Abu Dhabi tyre test?

Was it a recurrence of the sore foot that caused the unfortunate fellow to withdraw from a tyre test in October?

If Pascal Wehrlein impresses the high-ups at Mercedes AMF Petronas F1 during the Abu Dhabi tyre tests, might that get Toto Wolff thinking about his driver lineup for 2017.

Just sayin'

I think tyres were made of harder compounds in not just 2014, but also 2015 & even 2016 as well. I could be wrong.

Softer tyres may bring Mercedes driven cars closer, or so i'm hoping.

That looks amazing. Looking forward to seeing the 2017 cars with the lower rear wing in combination with these huge tyres.

I caught the dying moments of the tyre test on Tuesday so I was only able to see the Red Bull in sector 3, but what I saw looked fantastic!

The few seconds reminded me how ridiculous these engines sound. I'm sure there's a reason why the broadcasters never let us "just enjoy the sound" of F1 these days.

By any chance, would this happen to be the same Pascal Wehrlein that was overlooked for the second Force India seat?

Mileage of all driver during the Pirelli tyres tests in km

Wehrlein 3248
Gasly 2494
Vettel 2228
Buemi 1190
Raikkonen 1054
Verstappen 517
Gutierrez 480
Fuco 478
Rosberg 209
Ricciardo 200
Hamilton 50

Red Bull 4401
Ferrari 4310
Mercedes 3507

Before someone asks why Mercedes didnt had much. That's because their dry tyre test in Barcelona turned out to be rather wet.

After all Hamilton did at least 9 laps. lol
