I'm currently researching the early years of Formula Vee in Australia and have come across a curiosity that I hope someone can shed some light on. Jack Bono was, of course, one of the early stars of NSW Vee racing but I have come across a report that mentions his nephew John as having raced. Some of the RCN reports from late 66 through to mid 67 mention John Bono (but sometimes Jack in the same report's photo caption!) but I presumed this to be a mistake or a use of his christened name (?). However, in Graham Howard's RCN report of the 7 May 67 Oran Park meeting he says "Jack Bono's nephew took third in his Bono-built, Kleinig-bodied car". Jack finished fifth in the original Bono car in the same handicap race. The only two cars on the entry list that might fit the description are Doug Brown's Kleinig (which may have been fitted with a spaceframe chassis at this stage in place of the original ladder frame) or Bill Newton's Newton which appears to have a Mako body. Could one of these drivers have been Jack's nephew?

Try a PM to Greg Mackie.,..

He's not posting any more, but he's probably still able to get e.mail notification of PMs. I can't think of anyone else here who's likely to know more about this.

I though  your program files went  back that far? There was a light coloured Mako/ Kleinig bodied thing running at that meeting, #11. Don't think it was a Kleinig or a Mako because the trailing arm pick up points are too high. #9 at that meeting looked like Doug Brown in the Kleinig. There was a post somewhere saying Doug had Spike Jones re chassis the Kleinig before it was sold in 68

I think the Newton was Boris Orazem's first car. Give him a call at Vintage Vee Dub a call he might know something.

Thanks Ray, I didn't think of that

David, car #11 from that meeting was Bill Newton in the Newton so maybe that's it if Brown's car (it was #9 at that meeting) was re-chassised by Spike Jones? You're right, Boris did have the Newton so I'll give him a call - thanks.

Just had confirmation that it was Bill Newton. Thanks all.
