To some extent that depends on what you most want to see - interesting or spectacular cars (and which era holds most fascination for you) or close, entertaining racing.

The HSCC meetings here in the UK, for example, provide a mix of both; less 'high profile' than some of the more 'glamorous' events but some really good, hard-fought racing in a really good, relaxed atmosphere (especially when at somewhere beautiful like Cadwell Park).

VSCC meetings are similarly entertaining - but very different from the events and series you've highlighted.

You don't get many boring Formula Junior races. Even if a couple of cars pull away, there'll be lots of racing lower down the order. There is usually a large field with lots of technical variety (front/rear engine, disc/drum brakes, Ford/BMC/DKW/Fiat engines). The cars aren't spectacular but many are clearly simplified versions of a GP racer. Lots of the cars have been "in the family" for a while and owners can be very patient describing car history. Some cars are fragile so the owners spend the day fettling them; other owners recline in deck chairs waiting for the tea to brew.

HSCC Formula 2 and 3 races can be very competitive. Ditto for two litre and smaller sports racers. Historic F1 cars and big engine sports racers require too much talent to be driven with full gusto, IMHO.

Do you want "Historic" or do you want "Racing"?

To me the result of any Historic Race is meaningless.  The ability of the drivers is so variable and the authenticity of many of the cars is, shall we say, questionable.  From simple things like modern tyres, brake linings, dampers and other consumables being superior to the period ones to modern knowledge being applied to subtly modify period engines.

The U2TC series for under 2 litre pre 1966 Touring Cars is worth a mention.  Large grids racing on a number of European race tracks.

HSCC and VSCC . as Tony says . cover most bases. Some historic racing is 'spectacle ' more than 'racing' - Historic F1 , and Gp C but FF1600 and F Junior offer extremely closely fought racing by drivers from teenage to pension age. I doubt if the group of cars battling furiously at Croft last weekend were unduly concerned about whether their steeds were rivet perfect replicas of 70s Formula Ford cars .as they were too busy having a hugely entertaining race - for all concerned .

I was there (at Croft), and enjoyed it. Unfortunately, in some classes, the grids were on the small side, and drivers' abilities were also fairly mixed. Still, a good weekend, and I rather have old cars that are not entirely period-correct but driven with some spirit than either processions of period-correct cars or racing involving only modern machinery.

The other problem with a lot of historics is the Trigger's Broom Syndrome. FF1600s in particular are often equipped with a brand new chassis.

I don't lose much  sleep over that . If sixty something (I'd guess ) Pertti Kiveri can be competitive in his home designed and built Kvantti , on his shoestring budget,  there's not too much wrong

The vintage races at Road America are spectacular!

But as often discussed, such events are about cars, not stars. The front-runners can be apt indeed, but the only hard historic RACING I've seen is on the telly -- from Goodwood.

I was at the Hockenheim Historics in 2011 or 2012 when FIA Formula One Historic was there and a lot of other historic racing series - that was nice as well
