Yesterday was a beautiful day in Melbourne for a drive to the hills. But one with some motor sport taking place. The Victorian branch of the Vintage Sports Car Club's annual Rob Roy Hillclimb meeting to be precise. Where there's usually many nice & rare vintage and classic cars that come out for some exercise to either compete or join in the display area.

So Vauxhalls, Bentleys, Frazer Nash, MG, Riley and many other marques were at the historic venue for some no stress motor sport and chattering amongst fellow enthusiasts.

There was an announcement during the event that the MG Car Club of Victoria (the venue lease owners/operators) have secured Peter Whitehead's original 1938 Rob Roy Hillclimb Championship winner's trophy. It will apparently be on display with the winning ex Whitehead ERA at next year's event.

I've chosen not to date the heading, so it can be used for future events (or even retrospectively).

Patrick Ryan's old bus, his 1918 Vauxhall Model D, behind the Batagol Bentley Speed Six grille.

Another from the Ryan bus fleet... now you can see why Patrick keeps the Model D dirty. He asked his 18yo son to wash the 1924 23/60 and the paint came off! (jokes). Seriously though young enthusiast,Conor Ryan competed in the well patinated saloon during a break from his school exams and complete with his red probationary licence 'P' plates.

Graeme Raper's historic Aussie special, George Reed 'Monoskate'. If i recall correctly he went up the hill in 24 point something seconds.

More to follow if there's any interest.

A couple more from Sunday.

To confirm that in MG enthusiasts minds the world in octagonal, rather than round, the foundations of the PBR brakes show the MG logo and the rotunda in the background of the Healey shot in actually an Octunda.

Very good to see this stuff, Stephen, keep them coming...

Do you have anything from the classic old spot on the steep part of the hill?

Ray, no photos after the Causeway this year. Where I was standing for the action shots gave a pretty good area to cover, but because there's a no man's land section between the guardrail and spectatorls. my line of sight after the Causeway was obscured by the ambulance. Unless someone knows better, spectating and photographing from past the Causeway (looking back) is prohibited.

I think I have some of that section from last year's event though.

We'll start with an MG or 2. Which brings me to an announcement made during the afternoon. The MGCC of Victoria are looking for any details of a pre-war MG Car Club, that if IRRC had Les Murphy involvement. If anyone knows, then I'm sure the MG Club would like to hear from you or leave a note here.

In the display area at Rob Roy was one of the 2 Lombard AL3 that came to Australia. If I recall correctly this is the Bill Lowe / Leech Brothers example. That in the advent of the Graeme Lowe Alta not arriving (it is listed in the entry list), takes the prize of my favourite for the day. Absolutely gorgeous little sports car.

How sad to see the Blanden MG Special with oversize rims, tyers then to see that the rear trailing arm has a ROSE JOINT.

Now I ask you how Historical is that but I supose it has been running like this for many years?

Daniel, it doesn't have a C of D, despite numerous attempts by the previous owner to get one, consequently it can only run in hillclimbs etc where a C of D is nor required.

Yes, but I guess the car gives its owner a lot of pleasure as long as he isn't trying to represent it as the real deal of the 1940s

Dick, it certainly has much inspiration from the Chamberlain 8. But many differences too.

This link will take you to photos of the Chamberlain when displayed last year at the National Gallery of Victoria.

I'll take a punt and say it is a 'tribute' built by Darren Visser who runs a fast bike-engined historic (and was competing in it at this meeting).   He's an interesting chap with a creative mind...

Darren's Bates Cyclo was parked nearby in the paddock. So you might be on the right path.

The Delage has history in the USA - Oldfield and Miller related, it also spent 28 years in a shed at the Lex & Diana Davison 'Killara Park' property

That is certainly an interesting history, Stephen...

I gather there's no telling which of the four cars this is?

Interesting to me, too, that it ran at the Amiens circuit I circumnavigated last year. But what I was wondering was how 28 years of ownership fitted into the Davison marriage, which it didn't. It was purchased in the early years of their marriage and sold ten years after Lex's death.

John Hickford could tell a lot about the Lambda Special, as he bought the car from Eddie Perkins. I spoke to John at Winto earlier this year, and assume he is 'still around'.

It ran at Lyon, not Amiens. We kicked the question about which car it actually is around for some time, but it's difficult to be certain. We Need more period pictures!

Will do thanks Stephen.
I'll check with Mike Barker who runs his Hayward there in VHCC events along with others in Dallaras etc in Formula Libre. Suspect there'll not be a problem. There's a sharp/steep step at Bryant Park that looks bad but doesn't actually worry the Mono.

It looks like avoiding gravel on return and in form up might be tricky though.......

James, Avoiding gravel at the marshaling area before the start line is impossible, but you might get a sympathetic official able to let you return back down the track if clearance on the uneven gravel return road is an issue. That's a given for the Mono.
