Claire Williams and Felipe Massa will hold a joint press conference at 1345 local time. No clues as to reason. Extension or retirement?

Extension or retirement?

I wouldn't be surprised at either option.

Wouldn't normally have a Press Conference over an extension would you?

If he does retire, it's probably the right choice. a solid driver, but never really top level. Never seemed quite the same driving wise after his accident either.

My bet is retirement and will continue in a new role at Williams

If it was an extension then it would strongly suggest Bottas' departure

A shame if he does retire. He deserved his chance at Williams and put in some solid performances but this year has gone awful after the first few races. Just a shame he never won a race after that title decider in 2008.

Well, EVIL ALONSO denied him that.

I have kind of defended Massa in 2014 & 2015 as I felt he really wasn't that far off Bottas (who was being talked up as a potential great)...........  but now we can see that probably Bottas is not a future great and Massa really hasn't been all that close to him in 2016.  I wouldn't be too surprised or saddened if he retired.  He isn't a bad driver but I think if Williams want to move forward they need to move away from the status quo, both in the driver line up and their approach to racing as a whole.

It better be retirement, along with Button hopefully and just a shame Kim won't be going with them.

I like all these guys, but the amount of young drivers with huge talent who can't break into F1 is depressing.

Happy he stayed for these many additional years. Had he left in the Ferrari years i wouldn't have really had anyone to support. Got a few other drivers in my favourable list, so wouldn't be this sad if he retires.

One hell of a career with magnificent highs and lows.

If they had that much talent they would already be in F1, like Verstappen.   I'm sick of hearing what are essentially ageist remarks telling us certain drivers are  too old and need to 'move over' for the younger generation.   Age should not be a factor, it should come down to whether the driver is delivering what the team requires.  Of course each team will have a different view on what they want from a driver as a package - speed, technical ability, sponsorship, media / marketability, etc.

I think Massa should go not because of his age but because I don't think he is still delivering...  but I guess we will find out at 12:45 today.

Button, Raikkonen and Alonso are all of similar age and IMO are delivering what their teams need.   I don't see any reason why they should leave at the moment.

I've got a strange feeling about this. Could this be his last race? Looks like his head has been nowhere recently.

You can't blame Kimi, Massa and Button for that.

Kimi and Button are easily good enough to still be in F1. Massa, I think his time is up.

Why would Claire even be there when he announces his reirement? Wouldn't he rather make it look like his own choice, instead of basically having Claire tell the world that they have decided to dump him?

Drive for Jaguar in Formula E combined with some kind of role at Williams, perhaps?

I can't imagine him wanting to just play video games for a living (third driver role that is).

"Why I chose to announce my Formula 1 retirement at Monza is not an accident. Ten years ago in Monza, a driver announced he was leaving too – and he is one more than any other that had an influence on my career: Michael Schumacher.

I had been promoted to Ferrari at the beginning of the season, but I had been told already that in 2007 Kimi Raikkonen would be arriving – so my experience in 'red' could have been limited to just a single season.

Then Michael made the decision to stop and I was certain that I could continue with Ferrari for the following seasons.

Ten years on from that day, and in the same paddock, I decided to announce my decision."

He wrote a column where he is announcing his retirement, so they all knew it before. They put it online as soon as the press conference started   ;)

I was never a fan, but Felipe baby had a long fulfilling F1 career and he can leave with his head held up high. A well earned retirement. Hope he finds happiness in whatever venture he embarks on next.

Boa sorte indeed.

Nice guy to have around F1 but I don't think his performance has been quite as good this year as before.  Then factor in that Williams seem to be in a bit of a mess at the moment and it is easy to see why he didn't fancy another year in the sport.

So close in 2008.....  could say he was unlucky....or even lucky to have the chance in the first place?  Who knows.

I hope Williams pick an exciting replacement....... swapping him out for Button would not be very inspired in my view.

No great surprise, he's had a poor season. He's been looking a bit ragged lately and frustrated at the Williams' shortcomings. That post-accident win isn't going to happen now. I always liked him though, and just wanted him to stand on the top step one more time post 2008 and his accident; Abu Dhabi 2014 it seemed as if it was going to happen.

Well a win is certainly a stretch but maybe a podium here is not beyond the realms of possibility. To do it at Monza where the Tifosi still hold a soft spot for him would be fitting.

Massa got louder cheers on the podium in Monza last year than Vettel did in a Ferrari. I can't see it happening due to Ferrari and RedBull's strength and Williams weakness in 2016 but yet another podium here would be amazing on this weekend.

Good luck Felipe for your post F1 career!  He's gave us some great moments and some that we'll never forget, sadly not all of them were happy ones for him. I'm sure he'll continue with some kind of motorsport be it Formula E, Brazilian Stock Cars or whatever. All the best Felipe!
