Part III. Ricciardo beats Verstappen by 0.2 in qualifying. Fairly close given the length of the lap I would suggest.

Bit surprised to see Ricciardo beat Max. Really thought Max had him covered this time as he had been faster all sessions.
Ricciardo will be happy with 2nd and rightfull so, good lap. Knowing Max he will be very disapointed with 4th. But nothing lost for him yet, his long runs were very good, especially on the super soft. He only needs a decent start for once.

Only practice, when quali rolled around Dan was faster every session. Which really shows we read too much into practice.

Max being send out behind Ros is silly, very silly. I wanted him to get a clean banker along with Dan.
2 and 3rd was on.

The race pace is looking good for tomorrow. The quali pace will be easier to judge after the race, because all of the setups are a compromise. They had to work the tyre harder to get the laptime in Q3 but that'll help them tomorrow.

Instead of Max getting closer to Ricciardo, the opposite is happening as Ricciardo seems to be pulling away from Max the last few races

Also why put Max in a not upgraded engine? Silly, the new engine is better.
SS start for both driver, 1 and 2 is still on I reckon.

Still wasn't an ideal outlap, Rosberg was on his tail for quite a while there

Nobody knows. Latest news seemed to suggest Max was the only one without the upgrade

Does anyone know who is Max' race engineer?
I have heard them now a couple times on the radio and I am not sure if there is a good connection there. Yesterday he actually told Max to just get on with it when Max complained of being send out in traffic. Never heard that before. Today Max also didn't seem happy at times.
Not just specifically today but he is often not send out at an ideal moment in quali if you compare to Ricciardo.
I have the feeling with Xevi Pujolar last year there was a much better vibe between them.

In the last few races, who has out qualified and out raced their team mate ?

You don't think so? Dan and Max can go longer with the SS for the first stint. There's a chance. There long run pace was superb on Friday but Merc was sanbagging so who knows.

I also thought it was pretty odd. You don't hear stuff like that from an engineer often. Connection with pujolar seemed much better

Yep. There does seem some tension there. Maybe stuff goes on behind the scenes we're not privy to.

He was losing in sector 1 every lap. Although I'm not sure the upgrade would be 2 tenths in S1.

Well only one driver can ever get the 'ideal' outlap...
He passed Rosberg early on his out lap and had no traffic to deal with after T4.
He crossed the line as the next in queue after Daniel.
Bearing in mind they were having trouble turning on the tyres on their first runs, I don't think Rosberg being behind him waz an issue at all.
The Red Bull's just weren't fast enough today.

They were doing long runs when Max complained about traffic. What can they possibly do. It is a street circuit after all.

You mean like Monaco
Honestly though, I do agree Max is whittling away at the gap between them in Quali.
The kid's got some serious talent but he's not quite on Dan's level just yet.

Going out second is a big advantage here due to rapid track evolution. Dan got to go out second in Monza, so it was Max's choice here. It's up to Verstappen and his engineer to get the timing right around other cars.Greet lap by Ricciardo

And as for concerns about favouritism - it turns out that Max did indeed get the only upgrade to maximise the new fuel (albeit he didn't like it) so there should be some disquiet there - mostly around the deceitful way Horner tried to conceal it up until the point Max no longer wanted it. Ricciardo was apparently kept in the dark about that unless he was also telling lies.

Yeah, something about that whole situation seems very deceitful to me. Like how could Ricciardo not know about an engine disparity between the cars?

Classic Red Bull. Lots of games and clear as mud. I am not a fan of Horner. His skullduggery actually seems to generate tension.

And as a Ricciardo fan I hope to god any favoritism is purely made up by fans reading too much into everything, else Ricciardo is ****ed. And I have to admit I don't like the way Horner handled the situation this weekend. Just say it out loud like they did in Monaco why didn't he? As a Ricciardo fan I have no problem of Max getting the new update, because Dan got it first in Monaco too.
