both are examples don't use their real names. If you think off topic for a moment, look up the name Marrion Morrison for another example. Why not use their real names?

It's not exactly comical to laugh at someones name because they are born with it. Even if the name was Benjamin Dover or something else silly, it's not exactly a good reason to see it as something funny.

You can always change it, I watch a lot of stock car racing and a guy raced there called Whalley!  He changed it to Marshall.

 

Sense of humour failure I think chap. No harm meant.

I enjoyed that race... The star power wasn't there but the racing was at a decent level and Buddy Lazier's win was a great feel good moment.

Both are from Hispanic culture where use of diminutives is almost compulsory.  Sometimes the diminutive is actually longer than the real name (I knew a girl called Alejandra who was always called Alejandrita).

There was one really absurd one that escapes me right now, but "Amphicar" won the 1976 Targa Floria in an Osella with Armando Floridia, while the following year "Pal Joey" - Gianfranco Palazzoli, who later become Osella team manager - together with Giorgio Francia and Lella Lombardi helped Osella to second place in the World Sportscar Championship.

Others that come to mind - real names, I think - Billy Boat in Indycars, the South African (not Irish!) driver Paddy Driver, and the Belgian - also not Irish - Bernard de Dryver..

OT, but Wasp's Director of Rugby is Dai Young - 49 and still going strong...

A few years back there was a wildcard in 125cc Grand Prix named Pepijn Bijsterbosch - I still love the name. I believe he races in the IDM series nowadays.

Always thought that consecutive three time Le Mans winner Woolf Barnato had a great name for a racing driver. I guess as the son of Fanny Bees and Barney Barnato, he had to do something spectacular!
