I came across this forum when I was looking into the history of the Australian magazine Modern Motor/Motor and found a fascinating forum post here by the late Barry Lake.

I’ve been working on a website to catalogue automotive magazines from around the world.

It’s a bit like Wikipedia where anyone can help add information about magazines and issues. The idea is to build a history and searchable catalogue of all automotive magazines.

People can also keep track of which issues they have, want or are selling, and there’s a forum for discussing magazine collecting related topics.

I am trying to get the message out there to magazine collectors who may find the website useful and who can help build the catalogue. I’m also hoping there’s people out there who can help record the history of some of these magazines before this information is lost.

The website is www.magazinecollector.net and you can contribute there or message me any information you would like to share. Thank you.

John, that is one big project you've taken on. Probably akin to the progcovers project for race programmes.

Relating very much to Modern Motor, you will find on the net a nice piece on Jules Feldman (MM founder with Colin Ryrie), giving the early history of the magazine. Written by his wife (IIRC) after he passed away.

Here on TNF you will find various magazine tilte references, Those of us in Australia will often reference Australian Motor Sports (AMS) and Racing Car News (RCN) from where we've gathered a bit of history to help answer a question or two.. I have only had a quick glance at your website, but RCN appears to be a missing title. I think it is speedcafe that has a pretty good feature on Max Stahl and the early history of RCN, if that's of interest.

It certainly looks like a bit of effort has already gone into constructing things so far. Possibly worth a look at progcovers to see what happens there (if you haven't already).

Thank you for replying Stephen.

I've just searched online and found quite a few articles on Jules Feldman and the Max Stahl article so I have a bit of reading to do now.

I hadn't seen progcovers before but I have just looked at it now and appears to have a huge database of programmes which someone/s has put a lot of work into.

Indexing of car magazines is a big project so I hope to enlist a lot of help. I've designed magazinecollector so that anyone can contribute by adding missing publications and issues or fixing errors directly on the website (an approval process exists for new members to prevent spamming and anything destructive).

There's obviously some cross over between magazinecollector and progcovers and progcovers could probably benefit from some of magazinecollector's features like the aforementioned user-editable functionality, the ability to manage/track your own collection, and suggestions of trading opportunities when someone has a spare issue that another person wants.

A significant proportion of the indexing has so far been done by myself and I don't have any Racing Car News in my collection (I did have many issues from the 80s and 90s in the past but regretfully sold them off at some point). Hopefully there's someone out there with a collection of RCN and some free time.

Off to bed at the gate to Road Atlanta, so have yet to look at your site... but sounds like a great idea to me.

Mostly, Welcome to TNF!!!

You might wish to know about this database - somebody has been working on this for some considerable time:

Thank you RLT. I had not found this website when I was looking to see if any thing already existed.

My project is quite different though, as my aim is to create a searchable index of each issue, not just a list of titles and their details, and also the tools I have for people to manage their collection.

I will contact the site author and see if there is any possibility to collaborate.

Thanks Allen and wow... your website is an amazing wealth of information that will no doubt keep me busy reading and from doing other things I should be doing. I'll have a look through and see if there is anything I can contribute but looks unlikely that I would have anything that you don't already.
