FIA planning selection program for female racers

Plans for a major European selection programme for young female drivers in 2018 have been outlined by the FIA’s Women in Motorsport commission. The project was revealed during the opening day of the second FIA Women in Motorsport seminar, currently being held in Lisbon, Portugal, by the commission's president Michele Mouton. Based around the concept of a 'karting slalom', where go-karts and the other necessary equipment is provided by the local federation... <continues>

 

Mouton goes on to mention two karting successes they want to emulate, Marta Garcia racing in Spanish F4 and Lucile Cypriano in the Seat Leon Eurocup. Not clear if the FIA wants to sponsor the young women they select in this program, details are fairly scarce at this point.

 

Edit: they do already sponsor Garcia in Spanish F4.

Nice idea, and Michele Mouton is probably the closest European equivalent to a Lyn St James figure bringing women through into the sporting arena.

 

Good luck to them. If the programme is successful, I hope they find a way of extending it to other disadvantaged groups like the children of non-millionaires.
