Unliklely considering they have as far as I know never competed in the WRC since it began in 1973. Circuit racing and motorbikes have always been more of their thing.

Where do you get this assertion that Honda "wants" to join WRC?
Pure fantasy

Yeah, Audi too have are involved in rallycross, doesn't mean they are thinking of joining the WRC.

Especially as VW is already there.
That being said, I think a smart move would be for the WRC to create an electric class. I can envision a version of either quick-charge or quick-change batteries during service stops between stages. It would be expensive, but it would be a way to re-invigorate the WRC and turn it into a technology lab.
WRC stages are generally 15-20 km long, so the energy effieciency of the batteries is almost there if you look at the electric version of the AMG-Mercedes SLS.
I also believe that the FIA would never allow it to happen because it would compete with Formula E.

Honda cars are used by privateers in rallying, but only in FWD form, AFAIK Honda have never entered a works car in any rally (unless that happened in any domestic Japanese series). Arguably they have their hands full with F1, touring cars and MotoGP and wouldn't have the capacity to go WRC. But that might not preclude an outsourced WRC effort as Ford, Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi all successfully managed, assuming there was a sponsor to pick up the bills.
But is there even the slightest hint of this happening? I hope so,but I am not holding my breath.

I think the nearest Honda ever came to being involved is sort of semi factory teams running Civics of various shapes national series, they certainly have never run anythign 4wd.
Although Eriksson is running Honda's for them at the moment in US rallycross and doing a decent job, so that might hvae possibly spiked their interest.
