In the last 3 years this race would have been the final race of the season, as the season ended previously after 19 races. This year there are stil two more races to go after that one. However, the championship could be decided this weekend if Rosberg wins and Hamilton is not finishing at least 9th. Either way if the German wins the championship is all but decided. The odds are good: Last year he took probably his most impressive win of the season on this venue, which returned for the first time since 1992 on the F1 calendar. But it wouldnt be surprising either if we are going to see another twist in this championship fight.

circuit-f1-19-mexico.png

Interesting tyre choices, particulary from Mercedes, as they are attempting to get through the weekend with just five sets of SS. Pretty sure that they will try to qualify on soft tyres. Generally more conservative tyre choices than usual, which should promise an interesting weekend!

Mexico-GP-tyre-choices.jpg

Layout should favour high-powered teams, though the altitude can shift this a bit around as we saw last year. However, anything else than a Mercedes win would be surprising, unless the rain arrives.

The weather forecast meanwhile indicates dry weather throughout the weekend, however some showers are possible

Sadly Pirelli wont have any sombreros this weekend (duh)

(ah, another funny Rosberg podium picture)

Maybe they could wear a cap and a sombrero?

Last year the top ten did two stops, running S-M-M or S-M-S.

So are we looking at SS-M-M, or will we see teams throw in a stint on S? Maybe we could see some try to get through Q2 on the S, like Austin?

Another factor is track evolution, last year's freshly laid surface was very smooth and low grip.

Mercedes should run away with it but the Ferrari-Red Bull battle should be close.

On a track with such a huge straight where DRS passes are frequent, WHY ON EARTH is there just one detection point?

It happens in Canada and Baku as well and it is a huge mistake IMO. DRS is artificial enough in itself, but if you give no chance to the driver being overtaken to claim the position back then it becomes a travesty.

Shouldn't it be "the first championship point"

Just like Russia, hey?

Lack of fast corners and a lots of heavy braking will really help McLaren this weekend.

Mercedes could have one stopped last year.

Am I right in saying that tracks become more abrasive the longer they are in use? So a year of weather and racing will put pay to any 1-stoppers.

The SS probably won't push them into a 3 stop however, so it should be a fine race tyre on a comfortable 2 stop. I suspect something similar to Austin.

Maybe even SS-SS-M if you're aggressive.

Point and shoot kind of like Canada. Lower downforce and grip, I expect Ferrari to be more competitive than last weekend.

Can the RBRs and Ferraris get into the mix with the Mercs? Lewis will be hoping for some help but he has to be perfect again like he was in Austin.

Lets hope the championship heats up.

Over time, the track does become more abrasive as the bitumen settles and the aggregate becomes more exposed. Tracks like Barcelona and Suzuka are good examples. Whether there's much of an effect after a year, I don't know. The Pirelli preview also mentions that a lot of series have run there in the last year, so the track should at least be more rubbered in.

I also overlooked that Perez one stopped last year, on his way to eighth.

Altitude is a big problem and the very long straights will hurt them

Looking forward to this race. Looking like another sellout, and I can't wait to see if they're able to pull off what they want to do with the podium ceremony. If they do, it will be spectacular.

I see the opposite. Williams are bad at low-medium speed corners. McLaren excel at tracks like this but their compromised aero hurts them at high speed corners.

I think there was an article about it somewhere, but basically they want it like last year, in the baseball stadium section, but this time they want to try to also fill the track with fans from other parts of the circuit, most likely from exit of Parabolica and from the front straight. The trick will be getting them over there quickly enough. If they can pull it off though, it will be even bigger and better than last year's podium, and that was pretty amazing.

I tend to agree. The circuit and facilities have had a year to bed in. The circuit looked a little dishevelled last year.

Championship still alive, Force India & Perez stronger than ever. Yep, it'll be good.

Anyway looking forward to the weekend, I don't think the championship will be decided this weekend and like someone said last week. Most of the boring races last year have been great races this year and vice versa. So this race and Brazil and Abu Dhabi should be pretty good.

Can't be worse.

I was watching a few weeks ago the 6h race on that track and was shocked how different the camera work was compared to the F1 race. It was so much better, it looked like a completely different track and made for a better viewing experience! This alone would make things much better.....

But well, the track isnt promising great action either way, but who knows.....

and like someone said last week. Most of the boring races last year have been great races this year and vice versa.

Well, Monza was last year and this year pretty terrible.

Only exceptions are Monza (two bad races), Malaysia (two good races) and maybe Canada because this year the race was alright but doesn't balance out the boregest we had last year
