I got a call this morning, something crazy would be announced at Mercedes today. Never thought it would be Rosbergs retirement! #AMuS

Wow.
That has to go down as one of the most unexpected developments in F1 for quite some time.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:20
"For me it is a very special day to receive the trophy this evening is going to be amazing but for another reason: I want to take the opportunity to announce to end F1 career," said Rosberg.
daaamn...

I don't get it at ALLLL.....
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:20
"Hello Fernando, Toto here, how can I help?"
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:21
Well, I guess ultimately that is saying he doesn't feel he can top this result in a fair battle. So he's taken his chance and he's running off. I find this shocking.

"Hello Fernando, Toto here, how can I help?"
Jesus, Mercedes could have had their pick of several drivers.
Vettel, Alonso, arguably Ricciardo and Verstappen would have all loved that seat.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:21
I wonder if Bernie knew post race. Remember that "Now we've a problem" comment he made?
Edit: Not sure he even said that. Just reviewed the pre podium room stuff and didn't hear him say it.

I think there's more behind the scenes........
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:21
Woah. Most interesting thing that's happened this season.

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY
Nothing left to prove? He was never going to get any higher than this.
Fair play to him.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:22
So Mercedes is looking for a driver now... This will be interesting!
Unexpected development. He wanted to end his career as a world champion and I respect this
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:22
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:22
Pascal must be thanking Force India for not signing him.....
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:23
I think there's more behind the scenes........
More in what? The team helped him become world champion. They would want him as part of the team to do his duties as the world champion.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:24
Well...wow....just wow.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:24
I know but he certainly wanted to wipe the floor with him next year. Proving that it was just reliability.Everybody knows that already, no need to proof anything.

Biggest plot twist of this century.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:26
BBC are reporting it now so I think it must be legit.
I say good on him. He is leaving the sport on a high and deep down he knows he will not win another title so why not.
There are now 20 odd drivers scrambling to get hold of Toto's phone number... Alonso to Mercedes? Vettel to Mercedes?
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:26
Quitter!
And no way does Mehhhhhlein deserve that seat.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:26
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:26
Wow!! I never saw that one coming!
Merc - If you're going to give Alonso the seat, I need 2 months warning, so I can save up and buy enough popcorn to last the season.

I'm surprised, but I totally get it. Good on him.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:27
This is just astonishing
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:27
WTF!!??? That's crazy!
In all seriousness fair play to Rosberg as he's bowed out at the top which not many drivers get to do.
P.S. This could be the biggest slice of luck Wehrlein will ever get in his career if he gets this seat.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:28
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:28
Let's start saying JEV and DiResta deserve the seat straight away! Oh, and Magnussen of course.

Massive respect for Nico. Very brave decision. Shows you how tough competing at the highest level is.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:29
Wow, on Autosport front page and they don't usually run rumeours so must be true . He does seem well into his child, wife and the family life so makes sense. Wehrlein to Mercedes? Also kind of puts paid to any of those desperate hopes that Hamilton would be sanctioned for Adu Dhabi.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:29
Wow. Absolutely shocked. And in contrast to the inevitable "what a pussy, running away from a fair fight with Lewis" comments he'll likely get, I have immense respect for his decision. He's a young man with a wife and child and tons of money, he achieved his dream, probably knows Mercedes period at the top is bound to end sound, and having driven several years with Schumacher as teammate knows the perils of sticking round long after you're past your best . . . a brave and smart decision. Good luck to him.
Of course, there is now a 2nd Mercedes seat free . . . knowing Alonso's luck, he'll probably buy himself out of his McLaren contract to get it, then they'll produce a dog in 2017.
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:29
Oh my word! I genuinely NEVER expected this. I can see his point, retiring whilst on top of the world, but my word, that's utterly astonishing!
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:29
That is quite the plot twist, F1.
Now please put Verstappen in the car or Alonso in the car!
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:30
Wow! - now that was unexpected. Very brave.
Alonso to Mercedes! - game one

Nico Rosberg:
“Since 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my ‘one thing’ to become Formula One World Champion. Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target. And now I’ve made it. I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right. My strongest emotion right now is deep gratitude to everybody who supported me to make that dream happen.
“This season, I tell you, it was so damn tough. I pushed like crazy in every area after the disappointments of the last two years; they fuelled my motivation to levels I had never experienced before. And of course that had an impact on the ones I love, too – it was a whole family effort of sacrifice, putting everything behind our target. I cannot find enough words to thank my wife Vivian; she has been incredible. She understood that this year was the big one, our opportunity to do it, and created the space for me to get full recovery between every race, looking after our daughter each night, taking over when things got tough and putting ourchampionship first.
“When I won the race in Suzuka, from the moment when the destiny of the title was in my own hands, the big pressure started and I began to think about ending my racing career if I became World Champion. On Sunday morning in Abu Dhabi, I knew that it could be my last race and that feeling cleared my head before the start. I wanted to enjoy every part of the experience, knowing it might be the last time… and then the lights went out and I had the most intense 55 laps of my life. I took my decision on Monday evening. After reflecting for a day, the first people I told were Vivian and Georg (Nolte, from Nico’s management team), followed by Toto.
“The only thing that makes this decision in any way difficult for me is because I am putting my racing family into a toughsituation. But Toto understood. He knew straight away that I was completely convinced and that reassured me. My proudest achievement in racing will always be to have won the world championship with this incredible team of people, the Silver Arrows.
“Now, I’m just here to enjoy the moment. There is time tosavour the next weeks, to reflect on the season and to enjoy every experience that comes my way. After that, I will turn the next corner in my life and see what it has in store for me…”
Taken from his Facebook account.........WOW!
Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:30

Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:30

Posted 02 December 2016 - 13:31
Poor Nico, the pressure must have drained him empty......
Good luck to him on his future endeavor
