A special Pre-Qualifying session was held for 'local' South African drivers who had to lap the East London circuit in under 1'37", in order to be allowed to qualify for practice. Three drivers failed to do this.

The drivers in this session were (I think) those shown below, I have shown times recorded in official practice sessions. I am not 100% sure if all these drivers had to attend pre-qualifying session.

No 17:  John Love (Cooper T55-Climax)  1'33.8" (qualified)

No 18:  Paul Hawkins (Brabham BT11-Lotus)  1'33.1" (qualified)

No 19:  David Prophet (Brabham BT10-Cosworth)  1'33.9"  (qualified)

No 20:  Piet de Klerk (Alfa Special)  1'33.3" (qualified)

No 21:  Doug Serrurier (LDS-Climax)  1'35.7" (did not qualify)

No 22:  Ernest Pieterse  (Lotus 21-Climax)  1'37.9" (did not qualify)

No 23:  Neville Lederie (Lotus 21-Climax)  1'35.2" (did not qualify)

No 24:  Clive Puzey  (Lotus 18-Climax)  (did not pre-qualify)

No 25:  Sam Tingle  (LDS-Climax)  1'34.6" (qualified)

No 27:  Brausch Niemann (Lotus 22-Ford)  1'36.2" (did not qualify)

No 28:  Trevor Blokdyk  (Cooper T59-Ford)  1'35.2" (did not qualify)

No 29:  Jack Pretorius  (LDS-Alfa-Romeo) (did not pre-qualify)

No 32:  Dave Charlton (Lotus 20-Ford)  (did not pre-qualify)

Has anyone seen the pre-qualifying times for the above drivers?

Brian Raubenheimer is missing from this list, although he is shown as not arriving on most records.

He has previously told me that he did briefly participate in the first practice session before the gear linkage broke in the gate in neutral. He believed he had recorded a 1:36.8, but was unable to repair his Lotus 20 and so took no further part.

Just as a matter of interest, Paul Hawkins was an Australian and David Prophet was an Englishman so the South African driver requirement didn't apply !!

I believe that Brian Raubenhelmer practiced at the 1966 South African Grand Prix, not the 1965 race.

He is shown as Entry no 23 (Lotus 20-Lotus LF) with a time of 1'36.8" (did not qualify)

#23 Neville Lederle

Neville Lederle was entered as No 23 in the 1965 South African Grand Prix, as my original enquiry stated.

However Wsp77 suggested that Brian Raubenhelmer entered the 1965 South African Grand Prix. He entered the 1966 South African Grand Prix as No 23, not the 1965 race.

Raubenheimer entered both the 1965 and 1966 SA GPs.

1965 with the Lotus 20, number 30 with 1:36.8 one lap.

1966 with the Lotus 20, number 23 with 1:36.6.

Lederle not spelled correctly.
