Clem Smith

The South Australian motor racing community is mourning the death of popular Mallala owner Clem Smith.

Smith, 90, died peacefully earlier today after enjoying a career long span as a competitor and well respected custodian of the historic circuit which he saved from oblivion.

A speedway driver at Rowley Park back in his youth, Smith was a successful state competitor through several decades from the 1950’s.

Smith, who harboured a fine personal car collection highlighted by his beloved Valiants, had purchased Mallala in the mid-1970’s at a time when the circuit was close to being lost.

Keith Williams, owner of Surfers Paradise Raceway, had a few years earlier built Adelaide International Raceway at the same time as owning Mallala.

Williams had consequently closed Mallala when AIR was being built and placed a covenant on the land prohibiting motor racing to be conducted in the future.

When Smith purchased Mallala he managed to beat huge odds and overturn the covenant in a court case which set a legal precedent at the time.

Glen Dix, the former animated flag marshal at the Adelaide Formula 1 Grand Prix from 1985 to 1995, reflected on a life-long association with Smith.

“I saw Clem race his first car (Terraplane single-seater) down at Sellicks Beach in the early 1950’s and I was at Port Wakefield for his next race when the car had its mudguards removed,” Dix told Speedcafe.com.

“I, along with many other people, realise and appreciate just how much Clem has done for motorsport in this state.

“I believe Clem was the first guy to ever win a court case against Keith Williams.

“And years later when judges are hearing similar type cases, the Smith v Williams situation is brought up as a precedent.”

Smith is being remembered as a fiercely loyal and passionate man who was a recipient of an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) and his commitment to motorsport was also recognised with an Australian Sports Medal.

“We were both members of the Adelaide Sporting Car Club and have done a lot together over the years,” Dix said.

“I can remember navigating for him and his kids in a ski race down at Murray Bridge.

“We drove to together in various Valiant cars to get to Bathurst driving at 100 mph (160km/h) just to be a spectator.

“We went to Sandown together, where, in one of the first long distance events Clem drove a car for the Melbourne Chrysler dealer at the time.”

From 1991 Dix decided to put much of his spare time in retirement into volunteering jobs to help Smith out at Mallala.

“It was tidying up around the place, planting about 1600 trees and general maintenance which turned into seven days a week. I only gave it up about 18 months ago.

“Clem would come in to have a cup of tea in the caravan at the track then put his overalls on and we would go out and do the pick and shovel work or whatever the job was at the time.

“He would be alongside of me the whole way.

“For many, many, many years Clem placed enormous trust in me.

“And that relationship meant a million dollars to me.”

His trust and good name resonated with many suppliers of the Mallala circuit.

“When the petrol truck arrived at the circuit to fill up the tanks one of the drivers said to me; ‘this is the only delivery I make where I don’t have to collect the money before I leave the premises’.”

“They might only seem small words but if you think about it, they mean say a hell of a lot about Clem’s character.”

Smith was a man of honour which is reflected in the avalanche of glowing tributes on social media channels.

Speedcafe.com extends its condolences to Smith’s family and friends.

Copied from the Mentioned in Passing thread:

Here's Clem with some of the cars he raced over the years...

clemandcarsatmallalalo.jpg

The Terraplane, Valiant, the Charger he ran in Sports Sedans and his Group N Mustang.

The valiant is well-remembered...

clemandvaliantmallalapitslo.jpg

...he campaigned it all over the country, here he is chasing Bob Jane at Mallala:

clem_Janemallalalo.jpg

His broad interest in the sport saw him in the early Around-Australia Trials, still with a Terraplane...

terraplanetrialscarlo.jpg

He also went off-road racing, this jigger is Slant 6 Valiant-powered...

offroadracerlo.jpg

His interest in the unusual wasn't unique, Col Riches also had it, for some reason Clem had this photo of Riches leading a group at Port Wakefield. I feel sure Clem is in the photo, whether he's in the Simca (a Chrysler product at that time) or in the Holden maybe someone can tell us...

dodge_V8atportwakefieldlo.jpg

It's probably worth mentioning that Riches' DA Dodge had a V8 engine crammed into it.

Another photo from Clem's collection that I scanned was this one from the Adelaide Advertiser, I don't know what prompted this super-enthusiast to order this print from the paper, but he wasn't to know at that time that the next Formula One race in Australia would be in his home town 34 years later...

lagoandmaybachwoodsidelo.jpg

Yeah, I have posted that before, but it's a great photo of Doug Whiteford and Stan Jones at Woodside.

This was posted on another forum by my nephew...

He'd travelled almost 2000kms to a race meeting at Mallala, he was to learn it was worth the effort:

I had the privilege of meeting Clem while at Mallala for the last HQ nationals there, he took a group of us for a tour of his car collection. had some beautiful machines there and he was very proud to show us his toys.

Just an old time gentleman, as down to earth as they come, and I get the feeling he was the reason so many people in South Australia actually had a track to race at for so long.

For those that do not know Clem had two Chargers. That is the first, a VH 6pack tourer that morphed into a Sports Sedan as many did in those days.

The roller of that car is still around, I saw the owner at Clems funeral.

The second and current car is nominally a Develco car with  a big ex Sports Car 4 speed transaxle. The same as the Bob Jane Monza. I think both cars used the same engine, an injected Nascar 355 Mopar with iron W2 heads. [the alloys are porous] That car is alive and in the museum and has been used as a pacecar for the Clem Smith cup as part of the SS Championship.

That car was built from a brand new shell and had the alloy panels the same as the McCormack Charger. Though they have all been destroyed over the years. The current panels are fibreglass or Kevlar for doors guards, bonnet boot. The rest is steel. This is the car that was also run as a GT car and just avoided the Brock accident at AIR. The GT  BBS wheels were up in the rack until recently. I presume they have found a new home

With proper preperation and a decent steerer it would still run top 10 or better now. though I suspect all the prep details and set up details were in Clems head.

I know a good many of those cars as I saw them in the workshop while Clem was maintaining/improving them.

I feel the Subaru was bought new, if not it was very young.

The Railton has had quite a deal of recent mechanical work, about 12 months ago. Hudson power.

The Javelin is a very nice example, Clem did a Bay to Birdwood Classic or two in that car.

The 55 Hornet was travelling together with Jeff Barnes driving it.

Both the 34 and 36 Terraplanes have been around a long while and used quite a lot by Clem. The cream/red one was at Clems funeral.

When I first met Clem [other than the speedway] he was driving a white Pheoinix similar to that one,, about 1962!

The XK120 too has been around a long while.

The Mustang is the second factory RHD one Clem owned, the other was the red GpN racecar.

The red Cooper S? Is that ex Alan Marks? Looks like it.

The FF was being run by [name forgotten] as a lease car for up and comers. I feel there was two at one stage.

The Terraplane Special I have not seen together, just in parts.

There is actually a Gairdener Supermod/ Sprintcar frame that was with that as well. Came from the same owner I think. Clem sponsored, owned? the Phil Hereen driven Gairdner is the 70s. Not the same frame however.

And the red Charger Sports Sedan I have seen since it was being built and have raced against and rubbed panels as well. The one I would like to own, the reason I will NOT go to the auction but am going to the viewing day.

The rest I have not seen, though have heard about some of them from Clem or son Brenton who had the yard [and half the workshop] until late last year

The South Rd caryard is too up for sale as is the property next door where Mike Finnis ran Collectable Classics. I feel Clem may have owned that too. Same agent anyway.

Clem raced the cream and red Terraplane...

Notice that his R-series race car is not there, I'm sure he still owned it so I guess the family are keeping it. That would have been his most famous race car.

R series racecar is very long gone. The blue R with 3 figure plates is not in the auction. I guess that Brenton is keeping that one as it was his at one stage.

That cream and red Terraplane is a standard car, he may have raced one but not that one. Before my time around road racing. Clem was racing speedway stockcars, Terraplane Special around that period, late 50s.

The first red Mustang Clem ran in group N was infact a left hand drive car - crudely converted to RHD. (LHD steering box mounted on RH chassis rail etc.) I found it for Clem. It was a trade in on a truck at Stillwell trucks. Geoff Calvert, then Stillwell boss, was also chairman of Historic section in Sporting Car Club, rang me and asked if I knew of any Mustangs for sale. I also put Michael Finnis onto the Ken Matthews white car. Also put Clem onto the Healey 100/4. It was a beautifully original car. Since restored by Clem.

He also ran the Railton at Collingrove hillclimb several times. Yes, that is Alan Marks old Cooper S. I believe Alan bought it off Ed Ordinski, then had Morris Mania do a full restoration. Regards

Pete S.

Sorry. Also just remembered going to Clem Smith Motors on West Terrace (where CMI Toyota are now), for pre race scrutineering on the Tuesday nights before race meetings. A friend was running his black ex Morris Earthmovers MGA powered/MG TC gearboxed Elfin Clubman at a coming Mallala race meet. It was road registered, so we drove in to Clem's place. The owner of the Elfin had swapped a nearly brand new Cooper S for it from Clem Smith Motors. I have the ad. placed in Racing Car News. Also, in those days, Michael Finnis was Clem's Used Car sales manager I think. The Elfin clubman is still around. Owned by Nitschkies. It is red, and runs a Ford Cortina engine these days............so much for Historic accuracy!!! I should add, the engine was fitted after Colin Banks sold it to Indy Speed Shop for the John Walker Race Driver School. It was also painted red back then. Walker drove it at Mallala back then, along with a front engined special called the Calliban.  Regards Pete S.

A little late but the Auction of Clems cars happened at Mallala on 20/8/17. I went out on the Saturday for a look and it was extremely busy.

son Brenton was quite busy answering questions and starting the cars. A bit like a Saturday in the car yard!

I deliberatly did not go to the auction as I might spend money! though the ones that interested me made more than I would have paid.

I went into the pits of the racemeeting that was also under way and had a chat with nathan Mills who has the ex Cos/  Mick Monterosso Escort which it seems he has sold.

As well as the ex Mick Monterosso Mk1 Escort,,, well a few bits of it after Barney Newbound crashed and rebuilt it 20 years ago. That too was for sale. IF anyone knows Barney please tell him as he had expressed interest.

See the Mossgreen site for all the prices reached.

The Charger Sports Sedan went to Simon Pfitzner [PPG] and Bernie Pfitzners son.

The ex Alan Marks CooperS made 47K. A very nice car however.

The Railton 97k

The XK120 Jag $111625

Clems restored 34 Terraplane 27k and the 36 made $33500. The 34 was the better car.

The E38 Charger $141k

The tired old Van Diemen near 20k

The unfinished Matador X $11k to Jeff Barnes

The hacked up Gardiner Sprint/ Supermodified with Hudson power made 17k.

So some very good prices were paid. For those more interested look at the Mossgreen site. Search Clem Smith collection.
