It looks it will have a fin but a bit similar as W07 had (and the Williams render did) i.e. it slopes down along the engine cover rather than one like Sauber and Renault that has a top rim staying about horizontal.

That's what I see too.

@andrewbensonf1 : " Mercedes technology director Geoff Willis live on 5 live right now. Expects 3secs quicker start of year, moving to 5secs by end "

https://twitter.com/andrewbensonf1/status/834393539228360706

Benson is wrong, that's not what GW said.  He said the cars will be about 2 seconds a lap faster than the cars that ended 2016 and 5 seconds a lap faster than the 2015 cars.

I expected more actually.

The reference was always 5 seconds compared to 2015, but the cars improved in 2016 by ~2 seconds, so it was always expected to be 2-3 seconds compared to last year. The press was just delivering it wrong all the time, making it appear like the improvement was based on 2016....

I know,

But the changes are so massive that I expected a bigger step than 2 sec relative to last year.

It has to be more than a 2 second gain. Evolution of the 2016 formula just from season to season would've probably delivered a big chunk of that, as well as closing up the field.

If the raw 2017 cars aren't around 3 seconds faster than the optimised 2016 cars, the rule changes will have been a big fuss about nothing, and just an attempt at masking the awful engine sound.

What is possible is that becuase it's a new rule, the focus has been to get the fundamentals right. During the year, teams will focus on detail design which will bring in the laptimes in massive chunks. Three seconds inseason development is massive by any standard.

W08 and now VJM10 has step nose for housing suspension as well, I wonder many cars will be sporting it

Already looks a beaut from the teaser shots, yet again the boys at Brackley continue to defy the odds with the anti-penis nose.

The W08, like every Merc since the W05 will look stunning, coherent and 'right' compared to the rest of the field, rest assured.

to me it looks like the top of tub is too straight and not curved or taper down enough like w07 and angle of the nose in one blurry shots are bit too steep

Let's hope it chews tyres like the W04 or we are in for another whitewash.

Fair enough, I can see why you might think that. It does look quite thick above the rear stay of the upper wishbone. The fuzziness of the image doesn't help matters.

yeah tub looks like straighter than prev cars, I think, and under the regulation, straighter upper part of tub automatically means either more abrupt angle change and steeper front end like MP4-31/30 and last year's Manor, or step like VJM10

with new rule you want to place front tyre as forward as possible, then if tub is indeed straighter then it could be step like VJM10

more like bulge than step I'd think though, even VJM10's is lot more bulge than step

Sergio Perez said simulation date pointed to lap-time gains of up to six seconds [for the VJM10]

"It's a big step from last year to this year," the Mexican added. "We expect four to six seconds how much quicker the car goes.

What to expect?

We mustn't forget that their straight line speed will likely be hampered by drag. I too expect they will be quicker than that providing the Pirelli tyres Rent complete rubbish.

Let's remember Lewis told it looks like a boat and not get too exited just yet...  :p

Those blue and green lines are due to lights been shone on the car, I do not believe they are the actual colour.

the context in which he referenced a boat was size wise not competitiveness, as in these regulatiobs make ALL the cars look like boats. he has always been against f1 cars getting heavier and heavier.

That looks like a really steep angle on the nose. I'm intrigued.
Mercedes are running the w08 at Silverstone after the launch as they have in recent years so I'm looking forwards to seeing the 'beast' in action tomorrow. That's if storm 'Doris' doesn't put paid to any running.

Have a look at the above video. Still think you can see a step?

step (like FI) or bulge or abrupt angle change (like mclaren and manor) or smoother curve depends on the vanity panel shape ie suspension mechanism underneath it, but top of the tub (captured at least twice briefly in the vid) looks like flat (like, again, mclaren) or bit flatter than before. Under current reg flatter top of monocoque means tub is raised closer to reg max which automatically means less smoother/curved transition at bulkhead. W07's is bit less curvy = monocoque bit higher than W06 too.

VJM10's step is about exploiting vanity panel and bulkhead transition loophole to the extreme for suspension benefit, Merc, RBR as well as Ferrari exploited it last year already, with Merc by far the most aggressive. From the clip obviously W08 continues to exploit as well at least. Naturally I'd expect Merc suspension to be more sophisticated than FI so shud be much more flowing/curvy than that, but looking at what looks like flatter monocoque top, the whole nose shape may be more abrupt transition than before anyway, so kinda closer to mclaren, or nicer version of VJM10, or less continuous flowing curve than b4, I guess.
