This is quite weird in my opinion. I could very well understand this in the 80s and early 90s perhaps when computer systems were still new for broadcasting companies and such.
But this is 2017. We flew a human into the moon several decades ago using computers. We still routinely fly in space. We routinely track our position with computers and gps satellites very precisely. In F1 the computer systems and telemetry systems are very complex. Also of course we can easily measure the lap time of any driver with accuracy of fractions of 1000ths of seconds (so we can round up to nearest 1000th of a second). The technology behind F1 is at the top of the world. Everything costs millions and millions and even the most minute details are studied and improved very meticulously. Computers themselves of course have gone through decades and decades of advances in process technology and processing power.
And yet we can´t quite write all the lettes in driver´s names correctly.
The F1 broadcasters now have also what 40 years of experience and history in F1 broadcast. About half of which I believe must have had computers quite heavily involved so they have had a couple decades to improve that and have proper fonts for the job.
