Loose Fillings was started by Graham Howard, Garry Simkin and Terry Wright  back in 1999 to document the history and news of historic air-cooled racing cars. No less than 49 issues were distributed and redistributed by post and email worldwide.

After Graham’s death in 2013, and with the general drift to online publishing, there was going to be a bumper and final 50th printed edition.  But somehow writing, composing, publishing and selling Power Without Glory: Racing the Big-Twin Cooper has prevented that, and it must now, and probably for ever, be a ‘work-in-progress’.

Instead there is now a website at www.loosefillings.com where all 49 issues can be downloaded as pdfs and an intermittent blog where the latest item is Ray Bell’s account of Bob Britten’s wonderful BN12 ’500’ car under the headline Masterful Modern Reinterpretation. Other recent items have included a link to Doug Nye’s account of Gordon Murray’s purchase of the pulse-jet powered Cooper, the latest understanding of RALT 1’s suspension and dirt-track racing Bugattis (yes, there is a connection). There are some pages from #48 below.

There is also a Facebook page https://www.facebook.../BigTwinCooper/ which is linked to the website and you can variously ‘like’ or ‘link’ to these for notice of future postings. As always, Loose Fillings is happy to get news or receive potential contributions about air-cooled racing cars, mainly, but not necessarily historic.

EAST AFRICAN NEWS

KENYA has been much in the news

recently owing to the disturbed state

of the Colony, and the permanent road

racing circuit at Langa Langa, some 70

miles from Nairobi, has been taken over

and now houses detainees under the

Emergency Regulations. The Sport, how-

ever, must go on, and thus the Royal

East African Automobile Association

have hastily carved out a 1½ mile circuit

on the Nairobi Race Course, incorpora-

ting several tricky corners. About 300

40-gallon drums of oil were used to seal

the earth surface of the track and, as a

result, a highly successful meeting was

held there on 19th July. A fine example

of Colonial enterprise!

The driving was of a very high

standard, particularly taking into con-

sideration the new techniques necessary

on the admittedly tricky surface. The

two main events in the large car classes

were won by C. J. Manussis and Ron

Richardson in Jaguar XK 120s in both

cases, J. C. Morland won the events for

cars of up to 2,000 c.c. in his Le Mans

Replica Frazer-Nash.

To round off an excellent day, the

prizes were distributed by Kaye Don.

Best time of the day at the recent

Brackenhurst Hill-climb was put up by

Cliff Collinge (Flying A). Monty Banks

appeared with his new Singer Special.

Funnily enough,I now live around 2 miles from the Brackenhurst Hotel, I'm sure the current occupants (since 1965 it's been a US religious retreat) have no idea of the places motorsport past....
