Please remove this disgusting photo. What sort of image does it portray to our young guns of today?

Disgusting, racing in the Isle of Man where it is well known that 101% of competitors are killed.

Where is the government warning on the package that 'racing is dangerous and you WILL die'

I am going to cancel my subscription to this site and work tirelessly to have it closed down.

Hoping this message finds you as it leaves me 'hanging upside down in tropical kit being lashed with cat'o'ninetails'

No. 1, Fred Launchbury?  It's Snetterton, don't know when.

Hi Robin....

You were right on two accounts Fred Launchbury and Snetterton he was 51 not 1. The result sheet for BRC  8th July 1967 shows he won the event (sheet doesn’t show his number).

It‘s not surprising he had been Bantam champion in 1965 and subsequently 67 and 68.

As far I remember was given photograph by friend who was going to take some photos of the following production event.

If this is not correct then I can only assume it must have been the previous year when I rode in my first race in the Bantam class which happen to be the one and only; because the bike seized. If it was 66 then I could have been in same race as photo but on back row being a novice rider (did novice riders have their own event in BRC, if they did then I wasn’t).

Not sure if you meant to type 51 and it came out as 1?

Here’s another one, it’s the production event mentioned above.

I did mean to type No. 1, right name, wrong rider.

I don't know how it was done in '67 but the Bantam club had novice, intermediate and senior classes in the 70's.  If I remember correctly, novices could ride with intermediates and intermediates with seniors but novices couldn't ride in a senior race.  If that was the case you probably wouldn't have been in that race.

No. 7 in the second photo, Peter Butler?

Yes, it’s Peter in his distinctive helmet.

I’m now connecting all the dots and realize that both events were at the same meeting.

Always thought they were different meetings until I’ve just noticed the photographs had been taken from the same place.

Must have been the previous year on the Bantam because I’m listed in production event.

Oh well, it’s only taken me 50 years to work this out!

Bit late seeing this, but Fred was easily distinguishable by his US navy? goggles. Snetterton hadn't changed much by the time I first visited it in 1969 to marshal at a Bantam meeting.  Struggling to remember when fairings were allowed under Formula Bantam rules. I would take a guess at 1968 or 69.

Thanks for replying, it’s my chance to thank you for your past marshalling; if we hadn’t had you and all the other marshals there would be no race meetings; do you still marshal?

Not sure when fairings were allowed, perhaps there is an ex BRC member out there who knows?

Hunting through my old Bantam Racing Club magazines I found that fairings were O.K'd for Bantams at the 1967 AGM, so were first used during 1968. They had of course been used at non-BRC events.

I'm unable to help with the Snetterton startline photos., but do have a couple taken from much the same vantage point at another BRC meeting. Riders noted on the back include Colin Neil, Fred Launchbury, Sam Benn, John Coulter, Frank Leighton, P Roe, C E Baker.

Hope this is of interest?

Now I've dug out all this old BRC stuff It looks like I will not have to visit the local library for some time!!!

Thanks for info, recognised Benn and Coulter names although wasn’t in the Bantam circle as I went on to production events; at least your date seems to confirm my 67 results with the pics.

Jim.

Hi Jim - marshalling at BRC meetings then was highly attractive pastime for a budding 16 yr old road racer.  Not only did you get 10 bob for your petrol - you got to ride your road bike round the circuit to your marshalling position!  Once there, almost non stop excitement with riders sliding off, or machines breaking down. One such was a Richard Stevens?  who was proddy racing a Royal Enfield Constellation twin. Happy days.

Hi PJ? – Wow, you got ten bob! Did you become a road racer?

You probably weren’t around to see my exciting crash in 67 proddy event. Apparently a Norton rider came off at Russells and I collided with him; don’t know if he suffered any injuries, all I remember is waking up in Norwich Hospital. Not so Happy days, only joking!

Pete might be too shy (!) to post that he became not only a great Bantam rider, returning to Bantams until up to a few years ago after a successful time in the 70s and 80s riding TZ Yamahas.

If that ain't worth a pint Pete, nothing is
