Not really a racing comment (this is the only part of the forum I can get on)... Random thoughts of little consequence.
Drinking champagne is forbidden in muslim countries, so they do sparkling cider, if anything. In Monaco, the royals stay behind glass, to not get sprayed. Max Verstappen is all of 19. What does he do in the States, where it would be illegal for him to drink it? I can't imagine this ever being an issue, but stranger things have happened. Like our last election?!?
Should he make it to the podium, I wonder if there will be any pressure on him to not partake? (like 19yo college students here abstain - haha)

Another thought - Lewis looked so happy at the end of the Chinese race. He generally doesn't do well with competitive teammates. But it must be so much easier battling other top drivers, than a teammate. That has to be uncomfortable. The difference of breaking up with someone, and divorcing someone you have a child with. There is an intimacy you are bound to. But with Ferrari and Red Bull, he gets the competition he relishes, without his bosses questioning why he didn't beat his teammate - with the same equipment and information.
If Lewis stays happy, a big if, the whole season will go better. I did not enjoy his battles with Nico. Exciting, bad for (my view of) the sport.

And I never liked those Schumi chops, at the flag. The cars should pretty much hold their line until (the first brake zone?), when possible. Especially the first row.

Is there a lawyer in the house?

I'm sure (in the UK, at least) that the age limit only applies to publicly licensed premises. So it depends on how the podium is viewed in the eyes of the law.

I'm guessing Max wouldn't be provided champagne.  They'd be a few bottles of sparkling water or whatever for him to have fun with.

"Another thought - Lewis looked so happy at the end of the Chinese race. Max will not be on the podium in every race  :drunk:

Here in Morocco, a "Muslim" country, champagne was everywhere during the WTCC race. it's only a problem in the Gulf region because they like to show how super-religious they are.

Bernie choose the wrong countries for F1 at least in the MENA region.

In the US, Max and other under 21's would probably be given a non-alcoholic drink. Though I suppose technically if he didn't drink any of it and just sprayed it, he might be OK.

He'll be OK as long as it's in a brown paper bag or in an opaque generic plastic drinking bottle

As far as I know he can still drink with his parents consent can't he? The law only covers buying drinks, not the consumption of them.

So as long as his dad is there he should be fine.

Presumably the one he supported didn't win those particular battles.

In Texas I think anyone can drink as long as their legal guardian is with them. Just send Jos onto the podium, and problem solved. :p

The answer is to look at the Moto races. Most Moto 3 and 2 riders (and even GP at times) are under 21 and race at this track. So whatever happens on the podium there will answer what can happen at the F1 race.

Alan Jones didn't use champagne at Williams because their sponsor was Saudi Air so he only got to do the full champagne thing once in Austria 1977. The odd thing about that being he was such an outsider that day they didn't have "Advance Australia Fair" so played "Happy Birthday" instead.

The TX minor law is specific to a residence owned, rented or leased by the parent with the alcohol provided by the parent.  Max is going to have to wait a couple more years to drink legally in the US.  Some other states have a similar law though not all.

If by some stroke Jos Jr happens to win the USGP I suggest Orange Faygo used at the celebratory drink to honor the pride and joy of Detroit, Insane Clown Posse...

A nice story, but did it happen? Footage suggests not, and the Aussie anthem in 1977 was God Save the Queen.

Urban myth. Nailed recently in TNF's quiz thread. Advance Australia Fair was played. What seems to have confused things is some bloke in the crowd with a trumpet. The legal status of Advance Australia Fair as the national anthem at the time is another thing entirely!

Just beaten to it by E.B., but here's the link:

I thought they switched from Champagne to some non alcoholic beverage for the podium celebrations a few years ago?

But that's one of AJ's best after dinner stories, you'll be telling me his transit van story isn't true next.

See also the current discussion re memory and oral history in the Mercedes and Paint Scraping thread ;) But I always bear in mind this quote from The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance: 'When the legend becomes fact, print the legend'.

I thought it had been non-alcoholic for years. Most of the drivers don't drink or barely drink during the season as they're training programmes are so strict so I can't see them having a problem with it.

I seem to remember a few years back when Greg Moore scored his first podium the commentator saying. It seemed odd he couldn't drink the champagne but it was ok for him to drive a 1000hp car at 240mph. Which when you think about it is rather odd.

Another driver surprised by the absence of delicious, life affirming champagne, plus his sympathetic team mate.

Oh, I could wrong, I just remember hearing one of the commentators passing comment about it when they were in Dubai or Abu Dhabi a while ago...

After a Grand Prix I would have thought a sparkly fruity non alcoholic drink would be more drinkable anyway
