He's going to be doing it with Andretti as well. That's a competitive seat.

If previous years are anything to go by it's THE competitive seat.

This is huge news, and says something about the status of Indycar today.

A current F1 driver, and a double world champion at that, with backing from his team, is willing to miss Monaco to compete in the 500 is something that hasn't happened since the 1960s.

Nothing to do with indy more like a protest or disgruntled move. Also more attention for him. It must be killing him seeing a Ferrari fighting at the front know that it could had been him.

I wouldn't be surprised if his Indy 500 car loses 1sec/lap as soon as Fred puts pen to paper.

Exactly. The equipment will be good. Everything will depend on Alonso's ability to get to grips with the oval.

Wow,. where did that come from?  Alonso in Indy 500 in Mclaren Honda colours, wow. Super excited and super props to Mclaren and Honda for making this happen.  Also would be great to see JB back in a Mclaren f1 car again.

Makes sense. Alonso doesn't care about Monaco or any F1 race if he's not a championship contender. That's why he left Ferrari, he knew they wouldn't be fighting tor the title for a good few years (he was right), so the McLaren gamble made sense at the time.

They'd have had plenty of other options. They chose Indy.

Imagine similar situation a decade ago and Indy would not have been 2nd choice for an F1 driver and team.

Now that I am a little less shocked:

1 - Having written off 2017, I guess this prize ride at the Indy 500 is part of McLaren's and Honda's effort to keep Alonso from just walking away immediately and adding insult to injury;

2 - I don't think I have honestly wanted him to win a race so badly since early 2007.

That's BS. You don't race at Indy to score political points. This isn't Felipe Massa's Charity Go Kart race.

All the drivers should be allowed to do this. Series should collaborate to make it happen.

Motorsport drivers should not be confined to one category. It makes it far more interesting when they race in others.

I hope he does well. But it could be super challenging for him. Depends on how fast his car is.

Plus - never raced Indycars before, never raced ovals before and jumping straight into the highest pressure, blue riband event with a team that expects to win the thing - takes some balls, that does.

Alonso is becoming just about my favourite racing driver ever.

He's mounting a push for the Triple Crown. And why not? It'd be a better way to cement yourself in history than waiting on a third F1 title.

OMG

I'll be attending the Monaco GP this year. It's not gonna be the same without him...

From Honda's perspective, it makes a lot of sense. It's a cheaper (and more realistic) way to victory than F1 these days. In addition, they're making Alonso happy, and likely to stay for a couple more years.

Awesome news.

Though ironically Monaco might be McLaren's best chance of a decent result before the summer-  I hope Jenson has a fantastic 'farewell' race.

Would be funny if he still retires because of an engine faillure

Being competitive before the engine blows will be a nice change though.

Love it! Will be fascinating to see how a driver of FA's calibre performs on an oval, with no previous experience. Clark, Andretti, Fittipaldi and Villeneuve the only F1 World Champions and Indy 500 winners to this point from memory.

Graham Hill too. As far as lack of oval experience and being fast at Indy; see Jack Brabham, Denny Hulme, Nigel Mansell, Raul Boesel, Walt Hansgen, Mark Donohue, Peter Revson, Dan Gurney, Jackie Stewart, David Hobbs, Geoff Brabham, Vern Schuppan, Bobby Rahal, Teo Fabi, Roberto Guerrero, Danny Sullivan, Juan Montoya....you get the idea.

Having Mario and Michael around to answer questions shouldn't hurt him either. Looking forward to this!

Indy is a unique oval, and the drivers often note that it's more like a very high speed road course than a traditional oval. Fernando will adapt just fine.
