So who is he replacing? Sato, Andretti, or Ryan-Hunter Reay?

Dropped my pizza. Speechless.

Will he be able to test the car?

Right after Barcelona is the rookie orientation day...

Neither, I imagine - I presume it's another car just for Indy. Having one-off cars for Indy is fairly commonplace.

Indy is a unique oval, and the drivers often note that it's more like a very high speed road course than a traditional oval. Fernando will adapt just fine.

Let's hope he doesn't accidentally take a turn off into the road course out of habit

Now that's a shock news comparable to Rosberg's retirement. Who saw that coming?  :drunk:

I guess that's one good thing to come from McLaren's disaster.

TOTALLY out of the blue, and still it makes PERFECT sense.

He doesn't care about Monaco, when points would be a success, and say a super lucky P6 would be the best that could ever happen unless we had a 1996 race where pretty much everyone retired.

This is killer, and will be the motorsport highlight of the year for me.

Edit: 1996, not 1997.

He's mounting a push for the Triple Crown. And why not? It'd be a better way to cement yourself in history than waiting on a third F1 title.

Yeah, he's not going to be able to do much in F1 this year. Honda and McLaren know that. The circumstances have provided a bit of a unique opportunity, by modern standards.

Button to come back and miraculously win a chaotic, rain-soaked and safety car-heavy Monaco GP.

On the same weekend, Alonso's engine gives up after 2 laps of the Indy 500.

It is written in the stars.

He'll have to fly to Indy right after the Spain GP.

Jack Harvey is also running for Andretti at Indy, one off cars are pretty common

Graham Hill too.

Had quickly edited B Squared, in my excitement and haste had left Graham out. Great to see Fernandos sense of history, he certainly sees what Graham achieved and holds it in very high regard. Looking forward to this also!

Somebody, please tell me how to follow indy 500, I need to know everything about it now, including how to get live timing

First of all, there's basically two weeks of practice and qualifying, and most of if will be broadcast with commentary on the Indycar Youtube channel. :)

Engine failures are thankfully very rare in IndyCar...

...although every Andretti driver had one of those rare engine failures in the last race at Long Beach

His arrival is making a big difference. He is trying to promote the brand in an unique way. Racing Alonso is one thing but in Mclaren colors is something really clever.

From: http://www.mclaren.c...etti-autosport/

I would have thought the obvious person would be Jenson, since he is the contracted 3rd driver.

Lets keep fingers crossed it will become a 2 car effort

Interesting they are going in the old papaya orange livery rather than the current F1 livery.

Holy crap!

Really pleased about this though. As I've said many times before, I greatly admire the F1 drivers from the era where they'd race just about anything. It was super cool to see Hulkenberg at Le Mans a couple of years ago, and this will be amazing too. So excited to see how he does.

Also note that it increases the profile of F1 in the US at a time when the new owners have been rumoured to be considering increasing the number of races in that country.

I'm so glad to hear Alonso say he's going for the Triple Crown; that means he's serious about coming back to Indy in future years if he doesn't happen to win this year. Epic.

I think it's brilliant.

I reckon he was also being tapped up by Webber and others to do Le Mans last year or something else hence why the evil dwarf put the dump that Baku is on at the same time.

Fair play to Nando, it will be great fun, the Hispanic quarter will probably get very interested too as Alonso is a hero to anyone Spanish even slightly I would think.

Huge fillip for Indy aswell, Alonso is considered the best driver in F1 by many, even though he is not winning or in any position to, so to tempt him over is a great plan by Honda, to keep his interest up and also offer him something of an olive branch from Honda.

Great man management all round

Hold your horses all Alonso fans.......

Anyone willing to take the odds on an Andretti Motorsports&Partner team winning the "500" with a rookie driver two times in a row????

This is huge news, and says something about the status of Indycar today.

It says something about the state that the once winning McLaren F1 team is today rather than saying something about the status of IndyCar. Of course for IndyCar it is a PR scoop that an F1 driver and especially one who's a double World Champion skips a race and not just a race but the prestigious Monaco GP in favour of Indy 500.

Why not miss Monaco?

If there is one F1 event that is indeed an event but the least of all a race of all F1 events...

Please bring Montoya to race in Monaco, it would be so nice to hear his opinion about the McHonda (if Nandos opinion is caustic that would be corrosive)
