Yeah I think he's 17, right? But he looks younger than my 13 yo. Nice looking kid!

Billy has sadly lost both his lower legs and now faces a huge challenge to recover and return to a full and active life.

Horrible uphill struggle for both his parents and himself....

That's what I feared when I saw the cars come to rest and they were practically joined. Awful news but best wishes and hopefully he can return to a full and active life and I'm sure with his family's support he will.

That's very sad news.  Despite the way the accident looked, I was hopeful it would be just a matter of time before he was back to normal.

Let's hope for an Alex Zanardi outcome in the end!

That's a real shame. I was concerned about the lack of information and it turns out the worst prognosis was correct.

On a side note, what happened to "the NHS is universal healthcare"?

I guess the same that is in my country. It is nice to have, it is a good safety net, it can help in any situation. But if you have enough money, you can get private treatment, which in many situation are better.

The bad news is the extent of the injuries. The good news he's still alive.

I imagine that the funds will be used to pay for additional care, physiotherapy, equipment (including alterations to his residence) beyond the basic level of care provided, and just to provide a safety net for him and his family as they work out where to go from here.

Really? I am surprised he "only" lost his legs after watching the footage. He is lucky to not have suffered brain injuries.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't limb damage requiring amputation normally result in extensive blood loss? If so, the medical workers did a top job to stabilise his condition given how long it took to extract him from the car.

Quite possibly the bones in his feet/lower legs were so badly broken that amputation was the only option? He may not have suffered any major blood loss.

How long did it take to extract Zanardi?

I dont think the money is there to directly fund medical treatment.

We are in the process of establishing a Trust to receive, hold, manage and expend funds for Billy’s benefit.

It maybe be used for private healthcare, but it could be used for a number of things.

Dunno. According this story, the account was launched by race driver Tom Ingram.

It's just awful. And the level of cockpit intrusion must have been quite extraordinary.

Awful news - but those are the risks of motor-racing. Difficult to see how something like this could be avoided.

Dreadful. My heart goes out to the young man.

Hopefully we are able to learn from this and prevent it in the future.

Awful news.

I got there at Donington on Sunday during the aftermath of the crash and saw all the ambulances on the track, knew something serious had happened but didn't think it would be this bad.

Not that it's much consolation at all really but I've donated and hope that you can too.

Very saddened to read this, I saw it live and it was obviously very bad. But he is young, otherwise healthy and lives in time where such tragedys aren't the end of the story. From Zinardi to Sausset we know that this young man still has a lot of ptoential especially as car technology, driver interfaces and prosthetics are all advancing at an incredible pace.

Sad to hear that what some described as the second-to-worst scenario has come to pass.

As difficult as the coming years will be, it sounds like he is in good hands. Best wishes to him and his family!

Very sad to hear. I suppose looking for the positives is that he's still alive, and I'm sure the motorsport community particularly in Britain will rally round and help out in any way they can.

Takes the shine off what was an otherwise excellent day at Donington on Sunday. Had been hoping for some good news. :(

Horrific result to a life threatening and dreadful accident... Hopefully he'll be able to cope with the aftermath and carry on.
