Today we saw Valtteri Bottas become a new GP winner. Over the years it's been a bit of a forum tradition to hold a poll for who's next, although I've searched around and can't find a similar topic from when Verstappen won in Spain last year. I did find them from 2014/2015 which are amusing:

Who will be 106th F1 race winner?

Considering that this thread was from 2014 when Max Verstappen hadn't even raced yet, I think these posts were VERY inspired:

Max Verstappen, obviously.... ;)

Max Verstapen

I don't think there will be a 106th winner in 2015, so its possible that the next winner isn't in F1 yet.

Who will be the next new race winner?

I had a pretty terrible guess on this one:

Kvyat on a Red Bull-Merc next year.

And this guy got it right again:

Even though I'm not a big Verstappen fan, I voted for him because he is contending for podiums THIS year in the Toro Rosso, he should be doing the same next year but maybe in the right circumstances he could be contending for wins. I can't see Bottas winning at Williams.

Valtteri Bottas was a heavy favourite in both threads, I guess everyone came close, it's just that he became the 107th new winner rather than the 106th.

So who'll be the 108th? It's not looking like an easy clear choice is it - all current Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull drivers have won. My money's on Kimi's seat on Ferrari opening up for next year, and whoever gets it wins. So likely one of Perez/Grosjean/Sainz. I'm voting Perez.

Lando Norris who replaces Alonso just in time when McLaren becomes competitive again.

Yeah, someone has got to get a shot in a big team.

If Perez really gets the Ferrari seat, chances are it could be him. If Ferrari for some reason extends with Raikkonen for one more year... Who knows.

If one of Ricciardo or Verstappen leaves RBR after 2018, Sainz could finally get a shot there for 2019?

Or Renault could come good with Hulkenberg + possibly some other driver, who is not called Alonso by 2019?

Or McLaren happens to perform near the front with Mercedes engines with Vandoorne and Norris?

In a silly season turnaround, say, Ocon gets a Mercedes seat for 2019?

I dig up these threads, be warned.  :p

Not a bad shout actually. Bit optimistic that it could happen next season already, but I think could be possible in 2 years time. But I think the odds are better for a new Ferrari driver before that happens.

Perez has been driving beautifully for ages now.

He really deserves a shot in an actual top team, not one that just fallen off the stump and produced the first in a long line of no hopers.

I'm therefore really hoping he's the next winner. It's overdue

I think Ferrari will extend Raikkonen and probably only replace him with Ricciardo a couple of years down the line. Which to me either means Sainz (or Gasly) might slot into the RB seat and be the 108th.

Other than that, and excluding any Maldonado type surprise wins on SFW's birthday, I don't really think we 'll see 108 for a few years

Amazing to think that since 2010 we have only had 5 new winners (ROS, MAL, RIC, VER, BOT).

It is far less than in any of the previous decades.

With cars being as reliable as they are, with pecking order being as consistent as it is (Merc, Ferrari, RBR as the teams in which to have a shot at winning for years), and the same established drivers holding onto top seats for eternity... The turnover is really small in top placings. Only Rosberg's retirement out of nowhere saved us a new winner for this year!

And currently three of those 5 have only won one race each!

And every championship since 2008 has been won by Hamilton and Vettel, with the only exceptions being the now-retired Rosberg and Button.

I'm torn between Hulk and Perez, but currently I think the Renault has better chances. Everything may change in the future though, as I don't see anyone "new" winning for quite a while.

Sainz. At some point Raikkonen will call it a day and I suspect he'll be replaced by one of the Red Bull drivers. Sainz to then get promoted and get a win.

I went with Perez because I think he will be the first of the bunch to find a winning seat, Hulk will find a way no to win when he does, and I don't think anyone else is in a position to get a lucky win.

It depends on who gets Kimi's Ferrari drive next year, assuming he retires of course. Sainz was my guess, given Perez as already driven for a top team and very few drivers get two chances at the pointy end of the grid and the Hulk is on a contract to an improving Renault so will be unlikely to break that contract. Kind of hope I'm wrong as I think there is a lot to like about how both of them go about their work.

Perez or Hulk. I can see Ferrari taking Perez if they decide to ditch Raikkonen, he has imrpoved massively since joinkng Force India, and Mclaren began their downward spiral the year he joined them.

Hulk could get it if Renault continue to make good strides over the coling seasons. The Enstone team have won championships, and are fully capable of building race winning cars when properly funded. I expect that team to take steps forward with each year.

Both these drivers I rate on par with Bottas. Given the car, they can win races.

This. Either Perez or Sainz in a Ferrari, or Hulkenberg if the Renault comes good.

Pérez in a front-running car has to be a candidate.

At the moment it seems very much a question of who will either move up, or which team will make a big step, first.

That said, Räikkönen has been at Ferrari for four seasons and hasn't yet won a race. It's not easy.

I like this order:

Perez, Sainz, Hulkenberg, Ocon. In that order of likelihood.

Yup, that's true. Let's see if he can win one this year though now that the Ferrari is better than in any previous years.

Getting a Ferrari or Red Bull seat may not be enough if Mercedes dominates all season and only a couple of wins per season drop to other drivers, and you do not happen to belong among them.

Sainz could one day join, say, Red Bull. But if they perform below Mercedes and Ferrari that season, it would be a tough call to pull it off. Even a driver like Verstappen there could only perhaps get one slightly fortunate win (like last year), even tougher then for Sainz.

Grosjean, in a Ferrari or a Ocon in a Mercedes.
I don't think Kimi will race in 2018 in F1. I mentally try to prepare myself that it will be his last year so I won't be surprised when it happens. Grosjean is the most logical successor. Perez will not get a move up to Ferrari anymore those connections are cut. And the rest are lock in contracts with RedBull (and Vettel doesn't want either of them at Ferrari).

Bottas needs to help Mercedes beat Ferrari this year or else if Ocon impresses enough (which so far he is not yet) gets the seat. Wehrlein behavior eliminates him almost as much as the fact that he is not whooping Ericcsons but yet.

My guess is Bottas keeps his seat another year, Grosjean for the win.

Hulkenberg will be nr 109 though with the Renault and Sainz as his teammate.

My number one would be Hulkenberg.

I get the sense Kimi will stay for another year, meaning the only respectable factory seat will be occupied by Hulkenberg.

If Kimi does go, it's all about who goes where. If Ferrari poach Ricciardo then all of a sudden it falls into Sainz lap.

Otherwise it could be any potential Ferrari protégé, Perez, Grosjean...

Heck, who's to say that this time next year Honda will have finally sorted themselves out

Whomever finds themselves in the second Ferrari or the Renault seats from next season would be my guess. I'm struggling to see Raikkonen staying on now, although I've said that for a while and Ferrari still keep surprising me by re-signing him. Renault is more of a guess, but all the drivers on the grid without wins are outside of the top teams, and in my opinion Renault has the best chance of competing with them. So maybe Perez or Hulkenberg.

Either Perez stayed one more year at Force India knowing he got the 2018 Ferrari seat, or Ferrari will pick up a known quality driver like Ricciardo or Verstappen and in that case I would vote for a new Redbull boy, probably Sainz

Sainz, more future ahead of him than Hulkenberg or Perez who I believe both could definitely win a race but are running out of opportunities. The rest of the list is unlikely to a win a race or too unproven.
