Here is our Call For Proposals for the 3rd Argetsinger Symposium:

The 3rd Annual Michael R. Argetsinger Symposium on International Motor Racing History continues the mission of the International Motor Racing Research Center and the International Motor Sports History Section of the Society of Automotive Historians to provide an opportunity for researchers to present their work on automotive competition history.

This unique symposium will be held on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10-11, 2017 at the Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, NY.

The history of international automotive competition falls within several realms, all of which are welcomed as topics for presentations, including, but not limited to: sports history, cultural studies, public history, the history of technology, sports geography and gender studies, as well as archival studies. We encourage submissions from faculty members, graduate students and independent researchers wishing to present his/her research on a topic related to automotive competition history.

This year’s symposium theme is “The Cultural Turn Meets the First Turn,” highlighting the diversity of the motorsport experience.

In addition to the presentations given by researchers, Dr Elsa A Nystrom, author of Mad for Speed: The Racing Life of Joan Newton Cuneo (McFarland: 2013) will be the keynote speaker.  Several activities related to the symposium will be offered to participants.

Submit a 250-300 word abstract of the presentation/paper not later than Friday, Aug. 11, 2017 to Glenda Gephart at glenda@racingarchives.org . All presentations will be reviewed and decisions rendered by Monday, Aug. 21, 2017.  The abstract may be submitted in Word or pdf format.   Presentations should be limited to not more than 20 minutes, excluding time allocated for questions and answers.   For additional information regarding the Michael R. Argetsinger Symposium and the submission of presentations, contact H. Donald Capps at cappshd@gmail.com .

We have received a number of proposals so far and even more queries regarding presentations at the Michael Argetsinger Symposium.

In the next few weeks, we will be nailing down the details regarding the activities we plan for for the symposium.

We are currently looking at holding the Friday sessions at the Watkins Glen International track, which is being discussed, but something I think will happen.

Having Bill Green, the IMRRC historian, provide tours of the original Watkins Glen circuit is one item that will certainly be part of the symposium.

This year, as means to offset some of the expenses related to the symposium, we will be requesting donations to the IMRRC as the conference fee.

We are already looking forward to the 2018 symposium, which will also coincide with the IMRRC's 20th year -- not to mention 70 years since the inaugural Watkins Glen Grand Prix.
