Of course the most popular one is Danica Patrick winning an IndyCar race in Motegi.

But were there more female racing drivers which won single seaters/Formula races?

Women have also done well in the US Formula Atlantic Championship , Katherine Legge winning three races in 2005 and Simona de Silvestro five in the 2008 and 2009 seasons .

I stand corrected here but I think Ellen Lohr [DTM racer of the 90s] won the German Formula Ford championship in '87 or '88.

In the eighties (or late seventies?) we had Robyn Hamilton...

She had quite a bit of success in Formula Ford in Australia, but was given to some grubby tactics.

Latterly, Kym (Kim?) Ferrier, daughter of Vee racer Mark Ferrier, did some winning in Formula Ford and went on to success in F3 in Australia.

And the ever-lovely Sue Ransom took the John Leffler Bowin P8 F2 (1600 Twin Cam) to Park and cleaned up.

Sue was offered a Grace Brothers drive in FFord, but for her it was F2 or nothing so it went no further.

Marika Diana won the Italian Formula Ford championship in 2005. She's recently made a comeback.

Alice Powell won the Asian Formula Renault series in 2014, with four race wins. She also won the BARC Formula Renault championship outright.

Keiko Ihara won at least two races in the same series in 2002.

Beitske Visser won three Formula Master races in 2012 and 2013.

Lella Lombardi was a race winner in Formula Monza 750.

Claudia Steffek won Austrian Formula Ford races in 1996 and 1997. Osmunde Dolischka won at least one in 1995.

Another Austrian driver, Corinna Kamper, won at least one Formula Lista race in 2011. Earlier, in 2008 and 2009, Andrina Gugger of Switzerland won races in the same series.

At a (British) national level Amanda Whitaker won three consecutive Monoposto Championships from 1996 to 1998 , a series for various single seaters such as Formula 3 , Formula Renault , Formula Ford etc proprietary chassis to be at least 5 years old or home built . Other lady drivers to show well at a high level were Davina Galica who gained several podiums in British Shellsport Group 8 and British Formula 1 Championship in 1977 and 1978 and Lella Lombardi who , as well as being the only lady to score in the Formula One World Championship , also scored at least one podium in the 1973 Italian Formula 3 Championship and several fourth places in the 1974 Shellsport European Formula 5000 Championship .

You're right, it was Leanne...

Kym was not her mother, however. Mark married again prior to Leanne's arrival.

Historic Formula One driver Lorina McLaughlin , first came to prominence when narrowly being beaten to the 1974 Formula 4 championship , winning three races and two man of the meeting awards ! Lorina went on to win several Lydden Hill circuit championships in the late seventies and early eighties before going on to race in the Historic Formula One championship .
Another lady driver worthy of being mentioned must be Patsy Burt who concentrated mainly on speed events , winning no fewer than 42 outright victories and became the first lady driver to win a British National Championship when she won the 1970 British Sprint Championship . Patsy was also the first British competitor to complete a full season of the European Mountain Championship in 1961 .

Leeanne Ferrier (now Tander) is actually the reigning Australian Formula Ford champion. Not bad at 36 years of age with two young kids! Beat all the young guns - pretty amazing really. I've always thought

she was (and is) our best female racing driver. She is seriously quick. She came 5th in the V8 Development series back in 2001 when Garry Rogers gave her a go - she scored a podium at Wakefield Park in her first race meeting.

Oran Park shot is 1999

I stumbled on Michela Cerruti,, regular tin-top driver presently in TCR, who won an Auto GP race (Imola 2014). Not really a hot series, but serious machinery.

She may actually being the only driver with a first win in single seaters this century who has not done any karting or other racing before starting racing at the ripe age of 21 years!

The afore mentioned Leanne Ferrier/ Tander evidently had a drive of one of the 'new' 5000s yesterday and now wants one. A step up from Formula Ford, Improved Production,F3 or V8 Supercars she has driven in the last decade.

Said before and say again, in other forms of racing you can witness women and girls winning comfortably every weekend. I certainly have.

don't know why circuit racing is so restrictive compared to the other things, but it certainly appears to be sadly.  I cant remember ever seeing a lady win a single seater race in 30 odd years!

Did Paula Cook ever win anything? in Junior or something?

Just a question: why just single-seaters?

Does a driver of Michele Mouton's calibre deserve to be left out?

Sabré Cook is probably America's best lady karter ever and about to race in her first championship in cars at Indianapolis in a couple weeks.

Formula E class, a spec formula club series.

Seriously fast girl deserving sponsorship, and quite beautiful and bright as well.

Formula E class? Never heard of that

Desiree Wilson won two World Championship for Makes rounds at Monza and Silverstone in 1980 sharing Alain de Cadenet's Lola de Cadenet. Not single seater but is this the only case of a woman winning World Championship rounds in racing?

No, Lella Lombardi had a couple of wins in 1979.  Albeit the WSC was at a particularly low ebb.  Basically it was Osellas versus touring cars.

Lucy is struggling to remember the details but she won a heat of what she thinks was a round of a Champion of Brands meeting in the mid 80's, but was amazed anybody remembered

If anyone has info from that period that I can forward on to her, she would be most grateful

Well I'm glad that my memory doesn't seem to be as bad as I thought!!!

My old Autosports are somewhat inaccessible at present I'm afraid, would Brands have a record?

Please pass on the best wishes of a humble spectator to Lucy, it was one of the better eras of National racing in my humble opinion.

Curious in timing with my random post the other day, but here we go...

I received a phone call from a friend today, with some amazing news about his daughter -- Sabre' Cook -- who has rapidly become the most-celebrated American lady karter ever.

Earlier this year, a team owner noticed and she was offered sponsored rides in two SCCA classes; one a winged formula car, the other a sports racer, both spec classes.

Anyway, in her short time in cars she earned an invite to test for the Team USA Scholarship -- the launch pad for Josef Newgarden, Scott Speed, AJ Allmendinger, Bryan Herta, and many more now very big-name drivers.

The invite alone is obviously huge for any young driver, these are the best of the best in America.

At the test, against a large amount of hopefuls in an unfamiliar car and track, Sabre' posted the FAST TIME in both test races.

This is encouraging news indeed for Sabre', her parents and growing circle, Colorado and potentially America, and all who have followed her and just *knew* she was this good. Besides that, she is about to graduate with a 3.4 GPA in mechanical engineering and is very attractive, but above all has zero attitude and ego, and is just sweet as pie.

Next weekend has her competing in her first championships in cars at the SCCA Runoffs at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We'll be there to be part of it all.

Memorize Sabre' Cook my friends, send her a note on Facebook, watch her make it to the top.
https://m.facebook.c...abreCookRacing/

Driver Intro:
https://m.youtube.co...h?v=fnJOFZWZqhk

There's several other racing and assorted clips on YouTube as well, onboard and off.

This could end really well. :-)

(Edited for GPA typo, sorry)

It seems that being fastest wasn't enough. From Racer.com, I can't access the rest of the article:

"Aaron Jeansonne, 19, from Sulphur, La., and Jonathan Kotyk, 23, from Atlantic Beach, Fla., have been selected from an impressive group of six finalists to follow in the ... "

A pity, the Team USA drivers are supplied with very competitive cars for Formula Ford Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy. Still, Danica Patrick's 2nd place in Ford Festival set a high standard.

Thank You, Opplock.

We're all disappointed, but the grace Sabré has shown with it is remarkable.

Being that she turned quick time in both test races, we're unclear why the decision went the way it did — Edit: Now I know though won't say it here — but full steam ahead regardless!

I'll start a thread hereabouts soon, when we have something to announce.

Thanks Again!

Ayla Agren won some Formula 1600 series races and the championship in 2014. The same series that has graduated the likes of Neil Verhagen (Red Bull junior), Jake Eidson (IMSA Porsche Cup USA champion) and Aaron Telitz (Pro Mazda champion, multiple race winner in Indy Lights). Matthew Cowley won this year's edition, after being a frontrunner in British Formula Ford competition.

Sabre's pace in the Runoffs was a bit disappointing IMO. Finlayson outclassed the FE field pretty thoroughly.

She definitely had a tough week, and simply needs more seat time to lose that final second.

Typical "excuse" that appears, I realize, she's definitely yet to shine as we know she will. Graduating college will help a ton, she gets little sleep and racing's been a major back seat to that -- though for only another seven weeks.

We all know the learning curve is much harder when racing's new and sporadic (in cars, anyway), and when not budgeted to win or crash. It'll all come right in time.
