All the best wishes to Hayden.

Hayden, 35, was cycling with friends on a road close to Rimini on Wednesday when a road car collided with his bicycle, the American ending up on the hood of the car and impacting against its windshield.
He was rushed to a hospital in Rimini with severe head and chest trauma - and remains in serious condition.
Sounds nasty for him, hopefully his condition stabilizes. I assume he was wearing a helmet which will reduce the chance of traumatic brain injury, at least.

I'm encouraged by the word serious rather than critical. Plenty bad enough, but still hopeful.

Get well soon champ

Best wishes to him. Hopefully we get to hear good news soon - I still recall that final round of the '06 MotoGP season well. One of a limited number of people to have beaten Valentino Rossi over a season.

Probably the nicest bloke in motorsport who is a world champ, normally the gongs get the better of them. Sad to hear this and hope things turn out ok.

Cycling can be hazardous to your health whether racing, or just enjoying a ride. Despite attempts by the industry to make riders more visible to motorists, sharing the road remains a challenge for many. Best wishes to Nicky and his family, hopefully good news will be forthcoming.

AFP (Agence France Presse) is reporting 'Pronostic vital engagé', i.e. it's a life-threatening situation:

Another sad irony that after competing for many years in a dangerous sport without sustaining serious injury, something like this happens away from the track. Just as was the case for Schumacher.

Can't believe this news.
God speed to Tommy, Roger Lee, Earl and his sister and Mum. And if he has any damn power don't take this great kid away as there is not a nicer man to have ever sat on a race bike.
Keep fighting champ.

The nicest guy in the MotoGP paddock for like a couple decades.
If he seriously doesn't make it through ok, there simply is no God.

I'd like to ask all of you in advance to make sure you provide a source for any new info you report in this thread.
Not aimed at anyone in particular, just a reminder that we all have a part to play in preventing unnecessary distress.

Road cycling is as dangerous as anything else out there, it's bad enough if you actually race, but everyday training is where it gets really hairy.
You're in a vulnerable position out there for very long, all amongst regular people and the amount of morons out there is high enough to make it a lottery.

May the force be with you Nicky. I really hope this ends well.
I'm a keen cyclist but rarely do any road cycling these days if it's not in a group.

Racing as well as just enjoying a slightly faster bike ride is straight up more dangerous than F1 or motogp.Road cycling is as dangerous as anything else out there, it's bad enough if you actually race, but everyday training is where it gets really hairy.

Hayden suffered severe head trauma, resulting in a diffuse cerebral edema, plus an open fracture of the leg, which has caused a heavy loss of blood, as well as a strong thorax

Almost there with Google. The last part is heavy bruising to his chest and side.
