Does anyone have a programme for this meeting?

I'm looking for the entry list for the "Fast Girl Trophy", as I'm missing a name. It was the racing debut of Sally Stokes and Anita Taylor rolled her Anglia five times. I'm sure someone on here remembers!

If it helps jog anybody's memory, this was the John Davy Trophy meeting during which Mike Hailwood made his four-wheel racing debut in a race for 1500cc racing cars (finished 5th in an FJ Brabham) and Chris Airey was killed when he was thrown out of his A40.

The Daily Mail's report includes a picture of Airey's crash  and also mentions Anita Taylor rolling her car - although it claims only three times, not five. Anita had apparently burst a tyre running over the remains of the exploded clutch from the car of 'model Jean Dorken' (Who she? Ed.).

First three from the Telegraph (it was a handicap):

1 Jocelyn Freeman (Aston Martin Spa Special) 57.90mph

2 Michaelle Burns-Greig (Austin Mini-Cooper)

3 Wendy Hamblin (Lotus Ford)

FL Hamblin 70.86mph

The Guardian's report says Anita's car only rolled twice!

Pick a number, any number ...

I'm confused.  Did Anita roll her car on one single occasion, or two, three or five occasions?  If the latter, then them Angleboxes were tougher than I thought.

Fifteen starters according to the Daily Express, which says Anita's car 'gently ... rolled twice', finishing on its wheels. Not all starters named, although their report includes a picture of all fifteen. Two other names not previously mentioned; Gillian Sturgess (driving an unspecified type of Daimler) and Gabriel Konig (Mini Cooper). Konig and Burns-Greig apparently collided on the way to the grid, which needed 'five men to disentangle' their cars and caused a delay to the start.

Fashionistas may care to note that only Sally Stokes wore a skirt and was quoted as saying that "I think that in this man's world we must cling to every shred of femininity." She finished fifth. The others were mostly in 'skin-tight jeans and sweaters'. Good old Express, eh? ;)

Both the Express and Mirror printed (different) photos of Anita's crash. I'm not sure how you can 'gently' roll a car at 70mph though - that's the speed suggested by the Mirror!

I have a pdf of this. The report is hilarious in a wrong sort of way. I've got another one from about the same period, where Sally Stokes gives her fashion advice for wannabe drivers' girfriends/pit helpers. She suggests trousers, strangely enough, although a gaberdine or denim skirt is acceptable.

Anita's quintuple roll might have been on another occasion.

I was missing the third-place driver, so thanks Vitesse and the Telegraph.

Back in 2010 this very programme, and meeting, caught my imagination enough to start a thread. I no longer have the programme but here's the link to the thread anyway. Elise, it sounds as if you have what you need, but among the posts is an alleged quote from Autosport:

"Strip-tease artist Kim Stevens was sixth in her Sprite."

You can never have too much information can you?  :)

Thanks for this. I have all the information I need now.

I assume that the Wendy Atkinson who was driving John Markey's car is the soon-to-be Wendy Markey?

Kim Stevens may have had something to do with the Windmill Theatre. Sheila van Damm managed a karting team picked from the Windmill Girls in 1960. Kim's name doesn't appear in the Mirror article about them, but they did race against another team of showgirls, so she could have been one of them.

Jean Dorken is described as both a housewife and a model. I don't think she raced again.

Looks like it. There's a John G Markey-Wendy Atkinson marriage registered in Surrey Mid Eastern, third quarter of 1964. Although it does throw up some interesting anomalies and coincidences!

Firstly, there's another John Markey (John A Markey) who married a Wendy Mason in the same registration district in 1960.

Went to double check that, and according to John Markey's website he was born in Liverpool in 1938. But according to birth records on Ancestry he was born in 1937. John A Markey seems to have hailed from Yeovil. Born 1938.

Hmm. Wendy claims herself that she only started racing in 1973. She may be a little young to be Wendy Atkinson.

I know it's somewhat infra dig to ask a lady's age, but the most relevant Miss Atkinson would appear to be one Wendy M Atkinson, born in Surrey in 1941. There are however some others - one born Pontfract in 1936, another born Leeds 1939 and another born Northumberland 1944. Plus a Wendy MC Atkinson, born Eton 1942 and quite a few others with or without a middle initial. I blame JM Barrie.
