We had an exciting qualifying session with the guy who has 1 emotion taking pole. His first since France 2008 (I'm sure most of you knew that already). Championship leader, Seb Vettel took second with Bottas taking third. The biggest surprise has to be Lewis Hamilton who had balance problems and could only qualify 14th. Red Bull were a little disappointing and they'll probably be in for a season that won't match there expectations.

Alright I'll stop with the review and get on with the nonsense.

This is the championship standing which will probably look a little different unless Hamilton can do something miraculous

Qualy results

Qualifying Three

1. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 1:12.178
2. Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari, +0.043
3. Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes, +0.045
4. Max Verstappen, Red Bull, +0.318
5. Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull, +0.820

7. Sergio Perez, Force India, +1.151
8. Romain Grosjean, Haas, +1.171
9. Jenson Button, McLaren, +1.435 *
10. Stoffel Vandoorne, McLaren, no time set *

Knocked out in Q2
11. Daniil Kvyat, Toro Rosso, 1:13.516
12. Nico Hulkenberg, Renault, 1:13.628
13. Kevin Magnussen, Haas, 1:13.959
14. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, 1:14.106
15. Felipe Massa, Williams, 1:20.529

Knocked out in Q3
16. Esteban Ocon, Force India, 1:14.101
17. Jolyon Palmer, Renault, 1:14.696
18. Lance Stroll, Williams, 1:14.893
19. Pascal Wehrlein, Sauber, 1:15.159
20. Marcus Ericsson, Sauber, 1:15.276

* Both McLarens will receive grid penalties, with Vandoorne to be demoted three places due to his crash at the Spanish GP and Button 15 as a result of engine penalties.

Now since Kimi has taken pole at Monaco, I'm gonna pay a tribute to him. Take a deep breath and enjoy.

Since they locked out the front row......

Listen to that amazing noise (my goodness these engines are good)  :p

Okay that's enough videos

DA2K5o8WsAECXxY.jpg

Best strategy is a 1 stopper but.........

  • We may see some guys pitting early if they're near the back
  • Some guys try to go for an undercut if they're stuck in traffic
  • Drivers going long because the US tyre is the best
  • Drivers waiting for a VSC so they can pit under it and gain 10 seconds compared to green flag conditions
  • None of the above and yeah I've ran out of things to say about strategy

Anyway, it's not just this there's the Fernando 500 so even if this race is boring, a couple of hours later, a small race in America with a certain Spaniard in it will certainly wake you up. There's NASCAR, RX and the conclusion of the 24 hours around the Nordschleife as well. It's gonna be epic and it's just a sleep away!

Kimi is Hamilton's best friend tomorrow. Wonder if Ferrari will consider switching them to get maximum championship advantage if Lewis struggles to make progress? A repeat of Hockenheim 2010 on the cards, perhaps? :p

The great thing about this circuit that is different from others is the scary, roller coaster like sensation during the in-car television shots.

Hamilton would surely be best off starting on the harder compound, pitting to the US basically straight away and stretching that to the end. Pirelli have already said one set of US can do the whole race.

As I said in another thread .... Kimi usually gets decent starts, but Seb is the best starter in F1 at the moment. I see Vettel taking the lead in corner 1, fair and square.

**** that, when does the Indycar start?  The only plus side of Lewis starting 12th is that Ferrari might let Kimi win.

Probably, but I bet he'll have a lot of company in the pit lane when he does that.

You should look at the qualifying times. It seems like you have taken them from the sky sports website as they have Ricciardo's time wrong. He was half a second behind Verstappen.

Why is Ted Kravitz very self-consciously trying to avert his eyes from the billboard model?

Kimi was great yesterday. Disappointed with Seb's result, though there's still a chance to win today's race.

Also - MONACO!

You need a very superior start to be able to overtake into T1 here, especially as the polesitter has the inside line by default. I'm not seeing this unless Räikkönen mucks up big time.

Interesting to see how will Ferrari screw Räikkönen's strategy so Vettel could get ahead? Assuming Vettel doesn't get ahead on his own.

That would be fantastic, possible too with potential SC, who knows where he could end up being so close to the front.

Likewise, I'd love to see Carlos get on the podium, he had a chance last year but STR messed up strategy like Force India did on Hulkenberg's side of the garage.

Question, would it make sense for the top guys to run with the ultrasofts until two laps until the chequered flag and put ss on?

It could make sense if no SC happens and if nobody of those guys who pitted for US is closing down on them. The former is very unlikely

Mathematically speaking, if the US is a bit faster than the SS and there is no deg whatsoever, it makes sense to pit on the last lap if you are certain that there won't be any SCs or other disrupting events. In reality, teams will look for the right pit windows from very early on and make sure that they get free air (if race pace is good), maintain track position (stay ahead of others with better race pace) or save time under SC. So most drivers will have used the pit stop as strategic weapon before they get to the last lap.

Is the SS really that much slower? For what it's worth, Kimi's longrun on SS on Friday was almost on par (<0.1s) with Vettel's on US, both over 15 laps. No idea about fuel levels though.

Does it even matter, those starting on US will have their faster tyres on until their pit stop (after which, they'll still emerge ahead), and after that, the US will not be so much faster that one could pass a car ahead with SS.

It doesnt matter that much whether if it's slower, they are definitely much harder and hence more difficult to warm up, thus you will lose a lot of time when you are pitting compared to those who will switch to the US and be immediately up to speed. Obviously this depends from car to car, though.

I'm hoping the high track temp induces a tiny tiny bit of deg, giving us some fun around the one and only pitstop.

And what if he wins fair and square? I suspect a better start will go down as Ferrari sabotaging Kimi's clutch. Poor Seb, a lose-lose situation for him.

Pirelli and the teams are usually predicting the strategy and the tyre live expectancy wrong, so I wouldnt be that surprised if those who are pitting on lap 1 for US will regret it.

Edit: Oh, Hamilton says that "he has nothing to lose" and that he has "to take some big risks". I hope he knows that the stewards can penalize him for the next race.

You're right about them being mosty wrong, but usually it's in the other direction, i.e. the tyres holding up much longer than predicted.

Which is kind of a stupid strategy with the current safety car rules. If anyone pits right before a SC or VSC they will lose massive amounts of time to anyone who pits during those.

Nice to see drivers fighting their cars yesterday. The cars looked great also. After so many years of narrow, stupid-looking cars which barely tested the drivers, it's nice to see
