I remeber reading somewhere that Niki Lauda, while he was at Ferrari,  used to give his trophys away.  Yet when Alain Prost dropped his into the crowd at Monza 1989, Ron Dennis was incensed, saying it wasn't his to give away.

Did Mclaren always keep the trophys? Do Ferrari let their drivers keep them now? Or is this just another example of the changing nature of the sport between the mid 70's and late 80's?

I believe that it depends upon the Contract between the Driver and the Team

In recent years, Lewis Hamilton has said that he commissioned replica trophies for some race wins. Trophies (presumably non-replica) won by James Hunt have been displayed in 2016. Assume that it is/was a Ron thing to keep the driver's trophy.

McLaren have a huge trophy cabinet at their factory. (& it is just a factory, despite what they call it)

Easily 20 metres long & 2 metres high. (No plans to extend it at the moment :rotfl: )

A lot of teams keep the originals & have replicas made for their employee driver.

I think I remember Eddie Irvine keeping an original once, (for Jaguar?) causing a stink.

They must have replicas of the RAC Trophy anyway.

Thanks for the replies so far, did Mclaren alway keep the trophys or is that just post Ron? Do they have Hulmes, Revsons, Fittipaldis etc?

Lauda used to put some of his trophys in the window of his local garage and received free car washes in exchange.

If a driver wants to keep his trophies there is a simple answer, form your own team and win the World Championship in a car of your own construction, it worked for Jack Brabham.
