(Potentially) good news for UK Viewers - SKY to offer standalone F1 channel in pricing overhaul

Looks like they're getting rid of the numbered Sky Sports channels and will offer 'themed' channels such as Football, Rugby, F1 etc on standalone deals.

This is good news and an improvement on the current model. I'm still all for an FOM run streaming service, but for the time being and while the Sky deal is in place if they can make it more affordable for some F1 fans I think that's great.
This definitely changes the landscape as far as Sky's future goes. They have realised their model won't work as viewing patterns evolve.

£18 is still a lot a month. Makes you wonder if this pricing will be reflected by FOM.
£216 a year is a fair whack agreed. But wasn't the price to get SkyF1 something like £600+ before this announcement?
#14
Posted 27 June 2017 - 18:28
Won't make a difference for me. The price is one thing, but so is the abysmal coverage. From what I've seen, and from what other people have said, it is still awfully biased towards LH. And surely, surely, there's a better lead commentator in the land for F1 than David bloody Croft.

I don't think this will affect f1 viewers so much, especially legacy subscribers who only pay £12 on top of the basic package currently.
It's probably more aimed at taking football viewers away from bt sport at a cheaper price so they can pay £18 just for that instead of £30-£40 for everything

I'd be interested to know how this will work for those getting Sky Sports via over providers (Virgin Media in particular). Other than that... about darn time they split the sport channels like they have the film channels (albeit more so in the new sport case).

It's only a money grab by sky, they aren't doing it for the good of the consumer... they might have even been ordered too?I'd be interested to know how this will work for those getting Sky Sports via over providers (Virgin Media in particular). It's not any more. Now you need to have sports unless you received it on the HD terms at the time they shared with the Beeb.
I actually cancelled sky earlier this year, and was ok with watching on CH4. Sky then wrote to me and essentially capitulated and offered me 75% off. Apparently this is very common just now. All you need to do is hold your nerve and let them turn everything off. Within a month they'll get in touch and offer you 75% off for 12 months.
They know you have the dish and boxes already so it's a tiny outlay for them to at least have SOME revenue coming in.

Same, I'd dump sky in a heartbeat for a netF1ix solution.

Yeah, I keep cancelling to switch to virgin then the phone goes off with sky reps begging me to stay. Currently getting half price basic Tv and high speed internet, but tied into a 2 year contract.
Back on topic, if the themed channel wasn't only F1, but motorsport in general with HD indycar etc on top of the F1 then I might beg the wife to let me have some.......

I currently pay the £6.99 for 24 hours of Sky Sports on Now TV for the races that only Sky have live. That's worked well for me. I'm not too fussed about missing qualifying. I just watch that on the C4 highlights. I doubt this new price will make me change that. Will be interesting to see if the Now TV pass prices fall as a result of the channels splitting.

This feels like a way of getting a lot more money. Just like the whole VIP stiff they are putting through.
So when I say sod you Sky once it gets to a point where it's just gonna add even more cost or that I feel I'm not getting value for money because even though I'm paying slightly less I'm getting a lot less constant then they will just lose money on advertising revenue?
I'm sure they've done their numbers but as always this is the ridiculous money on football having a knock on effect to everyone

Me too, when I fancy it, and it works great and the price feels ok (although I'd like it even better if it was 48 hr coverage and included quali but it's not the end of the world).I currently pay the £6.99 for 24 hours of Sky Sports on Now TV for the races that only Sky have live. I don't mind paying for F1, but I'll never take out a basic Sky package so I can pay extra on top for what I want, that's bear money bruv.
However the coverage grates on me so much I'd rather just watch C4 highlights at the moment, it's simply better in every department. Although I do like Ant.

You can normally buy passed on eBay for less too - currently a day pass is £4.00 (amazing really as I paid £6 the other for 2 months of cinema!).

Netf1ix may well happen but it won't be coming to the UK in the next 8 years whilst sky have a legally binding contract for the rights.

Here's my guess at how it will work:
1. You'll have to buy a basic subscription in addition to the £18
2. Those with F1 on the legacy HD package will probably have to move over to the new £18 model
3. As usual with Sky, the price will go up every year
4.They are doing this because they know that there will be one or two people who they can sell new contracts to
I suspect that the Now TV option might be cheaper (although probably lower quality). Either way, I'm not subscribing (even though I already have Sky Entertainment)
Edit: Maybe if it were £2pm I might consider it

Being able to pay for a themed motorsport offering from a pay tv provider, and not pay for three dozen other channels I don't want, would in principle be something I'd consider.
Unfortunately, even if Sky offered me unlimited lifetime access to all their premium content for a one-off payment of 1p, I still wouldn't do it until (as George W Bush said to the Afghans) they change their leadership. I simply don't approve of the organisation and I won't support it.

If anyone with the legacy package allows sky to charge them a £6 p.m increase then they probably couldn't negotiate their way out of a brown paper bag

I subscribed to Sky+ HD about six years ago, and the F1 channel came part and parcel of that package. And I've always been reassured that I will still receive channel 408 to enjoy my F1 experience as long as I keep nothing more than my HD subscription going. I understand that their policies have changed for new customers now, but I'm quite happy.

I cancel every year and then negotiate 50-60% off the whole package.

Yes, exactly. We did the same thing a few months ago, got our package price down and Sky Q for free so that we could get F1 in 4K.
You just have to be willing to hold your nerve a little and sound committed to leaving if they won't do what you want. They'll always offer some form of deal rather than have you unsubscribe. It helps if like us you have access to Virgin cable on your street and you can spin a story about being lured across by them.
It's not particularly pleasant but part of the game with Sky.

It was the HD family pack to be specific if that helps.

If you had sports at the time then you will need it now. The legacy package refers to whatever you had at that time, and any change now will negate the legacy and you could lose the F1 channel. You might be able to negotiate your way around it. I do know of friends who lost the channel because of dumping sports, despite retaining HD, but they were not fussed about it and didn't try to negotiate. If you do decide to cancel the sports confirm with the agent if you will lose F1.Interesting I've been subscribed a similar time but was always under the impression I had to have sports.... will investigate

Maybe I'm stuck in an anochronistic rut.... (I like that
) .... But it's the principle of it not being FTA that stops me supporting or subscribing to anything. It's just not acceptable for a self proclaimed pinnacle.
Playing devils advocate here - going by your rules, top blockbuster movies & broadway shows should be free admittance too.
I have no problem paying money in exchange for entertainment. I'm just not willing to accept the current deal that Sky offer.

Is it?This is good news and an improvement on the current model.
It'll end up costing more if you like all sports. A bit less if you only want F1, but not massively less than I pay for all the sports right now.
And good luck finding a (non theme) pub, bar or cafe that'll pay the extra to show it. So it's pay up at home or don't see it for most people. Which is worse than now.

Maybe I've misunderstood but I thought the sports bundle would still be available to those wanting to purchase all the sport channels as they do now (although the channels will be under new names).
Can anyone confirm if that's right or wrong?
If that is the case being able to buy 1 channel for less money - or be it still over priced - works out better for those fans of a single sport, such as Formula 1.
