For $220 I've got 3 day grandstand seat, paddock access and pit lane on Sunday at St Pete...pretty sure I couldn't get all that at Silverstone for anything less than about £400...and of course the gulf coast of Florida is nicer than Northampton!
I can get into the next game at Molesey Town FC for £5 and it is within walking distance. To get into the next Arsenal game costs £90 and I have to pay £10 train fare to get there. And it still just 22 blokes kicking a ball around.

In all fairness to football (the European and legitimate version of the word football), saying that would be the same as people saying Indycar drivers can't make right turns.

Hey guys, those of you who've been to the St. Petersburg GP... does a "general admission" ticket make sense to watch the action, or definitely better to get a seat in the stand?

Haven't been to St. Petersburg, but from past experience at street courses:
Are you on your own or with others? If alone, walking the track is what I find preferable. You can see the action from a number of spots and get a feel for the whole course. If with others who prefer seating, or if not prefer then do not wish to stand for several hours, then there you go. One issue here that those who have been to St. Pete can answer is, how much of the track is blocked by grandstands? If, as a practical matter, general admission only affords you a view from very limited areas, then the grandstand may be better. My general issue with the grandstand at street courses is that if you're parked in the grandstand watching the better part of the race on the local TV screens, you're essentially watching TV. With better sound. OTOH, when I went to the Houston race in 2013 I was astounded at how much of the trackside viewing was inaccessible because large areas were fenced off. Since I had a start/finish line seat this was not a huge problem but it certainly soured me on the experience.

Well, this might well be the end of any Indycar drivers ever participating in this one again! Would be surprised if Michael Andretti wasn't on the phone to Rossi right away, telling him to park it and come home.

As a treat for myself ( and because i hit the big five zero that week) I'm going to St Pete next year for the first time and went with the 3 day grandstand, paddock pass, pit lane access option.

That sort of thing happens all the time down there. At times even the race drivers themselves are pretty sketchy. A couple years back they had to nerf (chrome horn) a local's truck that was trying to race them on one part of the track. Some of the locals booby trap parts of the course, stand right on the track, etc. It's the wild west down there.

I notice that when Wickens was injured at Pocono some posters came to the Indy Car thread(s) to call for the immediate banning of oval racing. Glad to see (from the posts I've read) that none of the regulars here have demanded an end to street circuits because of the Macau incident.
We're an almost otherworldly sensible group. Surely you're not surprised?

As Marshall Pruett continues the Racer.com Mailbag in Robin Miller's absence, this letter drew a chuckle or two this morning, for those of us old enough to remember what these guys sound like:
Q: Well, the racers decided to see Robin at the local hospital to check on his recovery…
BIG AL: I’m just so tickled to be here.
A.J.: Well that’s quite true. What’s that buzzing sound? Are those bees? Sneva, are you making noises behind my ear?
SNEVA: A.J., I was always in front of you, not behind you.
A.J.: Not in ’77. And besides, you couldn’t beat a herd of turtles
GORDY: How you feelin’ Robin? Do you need that cord plugged in the wall behind your bed? I gotta charge my earplug.
ROBIN: Feel free, that’s clear stuff anyway.
BOBBY: Do we get a free meal here? I’ve got be in bed by 8. Robin, you going to drink that milk?
EMMO: I’ve got orange juice
BIG AL: I wonder if those wheelchairs are fast…
BOBBY: Well I’ll tell ya… wait, my straw doesn’t bend. How can you have a straw that doesn’t bend?
MARIO: I’ve never needed a straw that bends in my life. Wait, who’s that tall blonde nurse? Is that Linda? I’ll be right back. ‘Hey Linda, can I have a slow dance?’
LINDA: Hi ya all, who needs a shifter?
ALL: ME,ME,ME,ME,ME,ME.
BIG AL: Those wheelchairs in the hallway look fast.
PARNELLI: They’re fast and quiet like I was in ‘67
SNEVA: Watch out for Parnelli, he’ll probably drop some oil.
PARNELLI: Who said that? I’ll give him a “Hurts Donut”
BIG AL: I’ll take a donut
PARNELLI: **POW** Hurts, don’t it?
GORDY: I’m turning around in circles in this thing.
SNEVA: Take your foot off the wheelbrake.
GORDY: Nice shiner, Sneva.
MARIO: Give me the new one. I could beat you all.
BOBBY: Now I’ve tested these things, and they need teeny tiny adjustments.
A.J.: These things are easy to drive long as Coogan’s out of my way.
SNEVA: Just like a bulldozer, right A.J.?
AJ: Eat my dust, Sneva.
SNEVA: We’re on carpet here, Tex
NURSE RACHET: Who are all of you?
BOBBY: We’re just checkin’ on Robin.
NURSE RACHET: Shut up! All of you get out.
BOBBY: Can I take that bowl of soup, Robin?
ROBIN: Sure, I can’t read those letters in the bowl anyway.
MARIO: Did we ever meet in Trenton?
NURSE RACHET: Get out, all of you, and leave those wheelchairs alone.
BIG AL: Golly jeez, those are fun to drive.
AJ: My bulldozer is prettier than you.
NURSE RACHET: Mr. Miller, who unplugged your morphine machine?
GORDY: See ya. Where’s my helmet?
SNEVA: Parnelli’s polishing it for you.
PARNELLI: How about another donut, Sneva?
BOBBY: Will somebody stamp my parking pass?
Get well, Robin.
Michael PolverMP: The scariest part is how you know the exact voices in Robin’s head, and how they spend most of the day talking to each other.

I can relate all too well with the quoted paragraph on John Andretti - stay strong brother:
RM: Compared to what John Andretti has been through and is currently facing, I feel guilty about even saying I’m sick. He’s a fighter like nobody I’ve ever seen, and my chemo hell is nothing compared to John’s – he’s amazing. He calls me to see how I’m doing when he’s fighting for his own life, and I’m so impressed with his attitude and courage. Thanks for being a loyal Mailbag reader, and sorry I got off the subject, but I just wanted to share my thoughts about Andretti.

As the saying goes among the graying set at my office, "Aging. It's not for the meek*."
* Actually, as a lot of them are ex-LEOs, it's pu**ies, but this is a family thread.

Much deserved. Building a racy AND BEAUTIFUL race car definitely warrants accolades, much more so than the ridiculous hundreds of aero winglets costing a fortune, looking ridiculous, and hurting close racing which are seen in another, lesser, series.
