The first driver of the ADAC Formula 4 is confirmed:

David Schumacher will race for US Racing, the team his father Ralf owned.

So the next Schumacher...

And: If Mick and David make it to F1, they would be the first cousins in F1!

Well, one thing is sure. The sons of former racers (whatever discipline) can always get drives if they are bothered to have a racing career. That's why racing series are flooded with them.

There's a template at the base of that page with quick links to the current seasons of virtually all of them (except for the Japanese and SMP series, which haven't announced 2018 calendars yet).

no, so far we just have 4 confirmed drivers. Carlin pulls out:

TRS Arden: Jack Doohan, Dennis Hauger, Seb Praulx

Fortec: Lucca Allen

At least: Doohan and Hauger are good karters, Priaulx is the son of Andy Priaulx. So the quality looks good so far. Hope for more quantity.

Worrying times for British Formula 4 I would have thought , seventeen at last years Brands Hatch test down to just eleven this year . How are entries in other countries Formula 4 series holding up compared to previous years ?

That's very difficult to say as most of the seasons starts in April or something like that.

The current running Formula 4 series (last race compared to last race the season before):

Formula 4 UAE: 13 (11)

NACAM Formula 4: 11 (15)

South East Asia Formula 4: 12 (8)

=> 36 compared to 34 the season before (a bit more)

The upcoming Formula 4 seasons:

US Formula 4: 4 (31)

German Formula 4: 6 (24)

Italian Formula 4: 12 (19)

British Formula 4: 5 (19)

French Formula 4: 13 (15)

Spanish Formula 4: 1 (13)

Australian Formula 4: 1 (12)

Danish Formula 4: 2 (7)

No details yet:

Japanese Formula 4, SMP Formula 4, Chinese Formula 4.

SMP could see also less starters than last season as there will also be a Finnish Formula 4 championship.

I think we have too much Formula 4 series.

Do we really need a Danish F4 series? Spanish AND French F4?

I would also love to see a European F4 championship.

Thanks for posting all that info HistoryFan , I was surprised to see only a couple of the national Formula 4 series broke the 20 entry barrier ( U.S. and German . )

I have often thought that there should be another Formula between karting and Formula 4 ( FJ1600 in Japan and the new National Formula Ford 1600 series in the U.K. fit the bill ) . This may allow more impecunious drivers to catch a backers eye and help them to progress further .

no additional series is necessary. That would be too much.

I don't agree . The British single seater ladder was until recently , Formula Ford/Vauxhall Junior , Formula Ford 2000/Vauxhall/Renault before moving onto Formula 3 and then progressing to Formula 2/3000/GP2 on an International stage .

Given that Formula 4 is supposedly the first step up from karting , I was surprised to see how low the entries were . It will be interesting to see if they increase this year . For the record the British Formula Ford 1600 championship regularly attracted fields of well over twenty and sometimes over thirty . Whether this series is attracts career minded young drivers remains to be seen .

We in the UK used to benefit from the fact that young drivers came here from all over the world. Years ago British FF and British F3 were the place to be. Perhaps inevitably there are more series elsewhere now, so the fields in Britain are going to be smaller. Also, the "ladder" used to be a bit of a mess, and the Karting - F4 - F3 - F2 rationalisation is intended to make it much clearer.

Jamie Sharp has become the seventh confirmed driver in British Formula Four driving for his father's Sharp Motorsport team . In the meantime twelve drivers confirmed in BRDC British Formula Three only two of which are British . Be interesting to see how large the field is and how many karting graduates choose British Formula Ford this season .
