I know it's not a very nice topic. But what I want to point out is all Formula 1 drivers who where injured in practice, qualifying, races or tests. I would like to see how the injuring rate goes down through the years.

2016

Australia: Alonso (missed 1 race)

2011

Monaco: Pérez (missed 2 races, including Monaco)

2009

Japan: Glock (missed 3 races, including Japan)

Hungary: Massa (missed 8 races, including Hungary)

2004

USA: R Schumacher (missed 6 races)

2003

Italy (tests): R Schumacher (missed 1 race)

Monaco: Button (missed 1 race, Monaco)

Hungary: Firman (missed 1 races, including Hungary)

1999

Great Britain: M Schumacher (missed 6 races)

Brazil: Zonta (missed 3 races, including Interlagos)

Mugello (tests): Badoer (missed 1 race)

1997

Canada: Panis (missed 7 races)

France: Morbidelli (missed 3 races, including France)

Can someone help me for the years before?

  • Alonso in 2015 (skipped Australia after Barcelona testing crash)
  • Kubica in 2007 (skipped USA after Canada race crash)
  • Villeneuve in 2006 (skipped Hungary after Germany race crash, before forfeiting seat)
  • R Schumacher in 2005 (skipped USA after practice crash)
  • McNish in 2002 (skipped Japan after qualifying crash)
  • Fisichella in 2002 (skipped France after practice crash)
  • Burti in 2001 (skipped the last three races after Belgium race crash)

Firman skipped two races in 2003 (Hungary and Italy). Raikkonen skipped a few races in 2013 due to a back injury (in addition to being unpaid). And, of course, Bianchi in 2014, even if nobody replaced him.

Could this trend be somewhat related to the fact that testing is more limited now?

1994: Lehto missed most of the season after a pre-season testing crash.

1994: Wendlinger had a hard crash in Monaco, I thought he was out the rest of the season and never regained form.

1995: Hakkinen had a severe crash in Australia, but that was the last race.

I'm sure Bottas missed a race due to injuring his back.

He had a DNS in Australia 2015 because of that, yes.

Also, Irvine fell ill (appendicitis) during the Austrian GP in 2000, being replaced by Burti from FP3 onwards

Well of course, there was Graham Hill's shunt during the very wet Daily Mirror Trophy at Snetterton on March the 14th 1964. This caused him to wear an inflatable rubber neck support for a few races thereafter. It became known as the gasket between the head and the block.

There are plenty of minor injuries that did not prevent drivers from attending the next race.

2000:

Zonta @ Silverstone testing -> Cut to finger

Ralf Schumacher @ Monaco race -> Cut to leg

2001:

Häkkinen @ Melbourne race -> Concussion

Räikkönen @ Magny-Cours testing -> Back injury

Frentzen @ Montreal in FP2-> Concussion

2002:

Sato @ A1-Ring race -> Concussion and bruises to left leg

2003:

Button @ Monaco practice -> Concussion and bruises to leg

2005:

Räikkönen @ Barcelona testing -> bruises and hurt his thumb

2008:

Kovalainen @ Barcelona race -> Concussion

2010:

Webber @ Valencia race -> Concussion

2014:

Räikkönen @ Silverstone race -> Bruises to leg

His "tennis" incident could almost be classified as a career ending injury. Ron Dennis lost all respect for him after that.

I think the back injury of Raikkonen, tennis incident of Montoya and Irvine's illness don't quite count in the idea of this thread. Maybe a separate category.

Raikkonen started the 2014 British GP, he crashed on Wellington Straight, even if he wasn't injured he wouldn't have restarted because of damage sustained to the car.

A few off the top of my head.

San Marino 1987: Nelson Piquet

Japan 1987: Nigel Mansell

San Marino 1989: Gerhard Berger

Spain 1990: Martin Donnelly

Mexico 1991: Ayrton Senna

Japan 1991: Eric Bernard

Mexico 1992: Ayrton Senna

France 1992: Christian Fittipaldi

Belgium 1992: Erik Comas

Belgium 1993: Alex Zanardi

Testing 1994: Jean Alesi and Pedro Lamy

The list for minor injuries during the 1980s and 1990s is pretty huge.

Depends on what JPM told Ron and/or on which manner Ron exactly found out what exatly had happened I guess. If your employer doest tell the truth at first.... (BTW: Disclaimer:  I have no idea at all if JPM did such or was straight honest with Ron instantly)

How about Guy Ligier's `right ` to react after Patrick Depailler's "table cloth" experience in 1979?

BTW, can't help having mixed feeling about a topic like this.

1988 Monza....Nigel Mansell missed due to illness [Chicken-pox?], hence Schlesser taking his place in the Williams...and Senna tripped up over him, causing the only non-McLaren win of the year

Mr Fan, you do realise there will be literally hundreds of these, don't you?

I will nominate Cevert's foot injuries in Canada 1973, the only crash I can think of where I wish the injury had been worse than it was.

Jacques Laffite 1986 British GP @ Brands....1st corner incident resulted in him having a broken leg, race red-flagged, obviously unable to take the re-start, or take part in any further GPs.

One of those tending to him after red flag shown was fellow driver Dr Jonathan Palmer....

I know another one though it is not F1: the thumb of Greg Moore in Fontana 1999....

I stop following this thread, my hesitations by now turn into disgust.... As if we need approval to know that in the past injuries were more common and if you go back far enough also more lethal.

You've asked less controversial qestions HistoryFan.....

A few others I can think of.
Ukyo Katayama - Can't remember what injuries he sustained but he barrel-rolled in a pile up at the start of the 1995 Portuguese Grand Prix. He didn't take the restart and also missed the next race at the Nurburgring where he was replaced by Gabriele Tarquini.
Alex Caffi - Missed two races in 1990 for seperate accidents. A shoulder injury in a cycling accident caused him to miss the season opener in Phoenix. He later injured his foot in the Portuguese GP and missed the following race in Jerez. On both occasions he was replaced by Bernd Schneider.
Ivan Capelli - Injured his ankle in qualifying at Detroit. He was back for the next race.
Alain Prost - Broke his wrist in a crash in qualifying at Kyalami in 1980. He missed that race and the next at Long Beach.
Nigel Mansell - Missed the 1985 French Grand Prix after an accident caused by a suspension failure on the Mistral straight.
Martin Brundle - Two accidents in 1984. Missed Monaco due to a heavy crash in qualifying. Later he broke both ankles in qualifying at Dallas and was out for the season.

2013. Kimi Räikkönen (13th GP) Singapore Grand Prix , (2001 Magny-Cours testing).

From wikipedia:

Kimi Räikkönen was forced to miss the final two races of the season in order to undergo surgery to relieve pain from a back injury he had been suffering from for a long time and which flared up during the Singapore Grand Prix.

He missed two races. He was set to return at Monza but an inner ear problem was discovered during medical checkup. http://www.eurosport...113/story.shtml

Frentzen @ Montreal in FP2-> Concussion

Looks like he had already gotten the concussion in Monaco:

"An accident in Friday's [Canadian Grand Prix] free practice session, coming only two weeks after a heavy crash in the Monaco Grand Prix has resulted in Frentzen opting to rest this weekend.
The German, felt unable to complete the test in France last week, complaining of headaches and dizziness. He underwent tests which showed he was uninjured, but yesterday's crash left him feeling not 100% fit for Sunday's race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve."

The amount of fatalities was big enough back in the day, let alone the list of injuries.

List of injuries for the last 20 years makes some sense though.

Remember that race. Aki, Mclaren dr rushed to the garage to tend his back injuries which infuriated Martin Whitmarsh.

Kimi went off to finish 3rd despite the immense back pain.

To add to the 1994 injuries, Andrea Montermini broke his heel and foot in practice at Spain.

Also, although most people haven't gone back to the 80s, I think Streiff's accident at testing in Rio in 1989 that left him paralysed is worth a mention.

Mansell also injured himself at Adelaide in 1991 when he went off in the wet.

Martin Brundle - Two accidents in 1984. Missed Monaco due to a heavy crash in qualifying. Later he broke both ankles in qualifying at Dallas and was out for the season.

It's also worth mentioning the accident at the 1994 Brazilian GP where he was hit on the head. He said afterwards that he was never as sharp after the accident, implying some sort of brain injury.

Didn't he break his back (or neck) in a CART crash in 93?

Also he won the wdc with quite severe pain in his feet (foot) for most of the season.

Also did his back in in an F3 shunt in 1979? And again in practice for the 1987 Japanese Grand Prix when the car came down on a high curb hitting the floor right at the bottom of his seat.

A classic case of counting your points before the chequered.

Coulthard also tried to blame the car for his crash into the pit wall in Adelaide 1995 so it's not uncommon for drivers to lay blame elsewhere.
